Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Ma'idah Verse 84

Al-Ma'idah [5]: 84 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَمَا لَنَا لَا نُؤْمِنُ بِاللّٰهِ وَمَا جَاۤءَنَا مِنَ الْحَقِّۙ وَنَطْمَعُ اَنْ يُّدْخِلَنَا رَبُّنَا مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الصّٰلِحِيْنَ (المائدة : ٥)

wamā
وَمَا
And what
lanā
لَنَا
for us (that)
لَا
not
nu'minu
نُؤْمِنُ
we believe
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
in Allah
wamā
وَمَا
and what
jāanā
جَآءَنَا
came (to) us
mina
مِنَ
from
l-ḥaqi
ٱلْحَقِّ
the truth?
wanaṭmaʿu
وَنَطْمَعُ
And we hope
an
أَن
that
yud'khilanā
يُدْخِلَنَا
will admit us
rabbunā
رَبُّنَا
our Lord
maʿa
مَعَ
with
l-qawmi
ٱلْقَوْمِ
the people"
l-ṣāliḥīna
ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ
the righteous"

Transliteration:

Wa maa lanaa laa nu'minu billaahi wa maa jaaa'anaa minal haqqi wa natma'u ai yudkhilanaa Rabbunaa ma'al qawmis saaliheen (QS. al-Māʾidah:84)

English / Sahih Translation:

And why should we not believe in Allah and what has come to us of the truth? And we aspire that our Lord will admit us [to Paradise] with the righteous people." (QS. Al-Ma'idah, ayah 84)

What excuse do we have if we do not believe in Allah and in the truth that has come to us, while we hope that our Lord will admit us to the company of the righteous people?”

And, in response to those Jews who reviled them for their Islam, they would say; why should we not believe in God and what has come to us of the truth, the Qur'n, that is to say, there is nothing to prevent us from faith when its prerequisites are present; and hope (natma`u is a supplement to nu'minu, `we believe') that our Lord should admit us with the righteous people?', the believers, into Paradise?

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

"And why should we not believe in Allah and in that which has come to us of the truth And We wish that our Lord will admit us (in Paradise) along with the righteous people."

Such sect of Christians are those mentioned in Allah's statement,

وَإِنَّ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَـبِ لَمَن يُوْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَمَأ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ وَمَأ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِمْ خَـشِعِينَ للَّهِ

And there are, certainly, among the People of the Scripture, those who believe in Allah and in that which has been revealed to you, and in that which has been revealed to them, humbling themselves before Allah. (3;199)

and,

الَّذِينَ اتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ مِن قَبْلِهِ هُم بِهِ يُوْمِنُونَ


وَإِذَا يُتْلَى عَلَيْهِمْ قَالُوا امَنَّا بِهِ إِنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلِهِ مُسْلِمِينَ


Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it, they believe in it (the Qur'an). And when it is recited to them, they say, "We believe in it. Verily, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed even before it we were Muslims." (28;52-53) until,
لَاا نَبْتَغِي الْجَاهِلِينَ
"We seek not the ignorant." (28;55)

This is why Allah said here
