Fussilat [41]: 17 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاَمَّا ثَمُوْدُ فَهَدَيْنٰهُمْ فَاسْتَحَبُّوا الْعَمٰى عَلَى الْهُدٰى فَاَخَذَتْهُمْ صٰعِقَةُ الْعَذَابِ الْهُوْنِ بِمَا كَانُوْا يَكْسِبُوْنَ ۚ (فصلت : ٤١)

wa-ammā
وَأَمَّا
And as for
thamūdu
ثَمُودُ
Thamud
fahadaynāhum
فَهَدَيْنَٰهُمْ
We guided them
fa-is'taḥabbū
فَٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟
but they preferred
l-ʿamā
ٱلْعَمَىٰ
[the] blindness
ʿalā
عَلَى
over
l-hudā
ٱلْهُدَىٰ
the guidance
fa-akhadhathum
فَأَخَذَتْهُمْ
so seized them
ṣāʿiqatu
صَٰعِقَةُ
a thunderbolt
l-ʿadhābi
ٱلْعَذَابِ
(of) the punishment
l-hūni
ٱلْهُونِ
humiliating
bimā
بِمَا
for what
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they used (to)
yaksibūna
يَكْسِبُونَ
earn

Transliteration:

Wa ammaa Samoodu fahadinaahum fastahabbul 'ama 'alal huda fa akhazathum saa'iqatul 'azaabil hooni bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon (QS. Fuṣṣilat:17)

English / Sahih Translation:

And as for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn. (QS. Fussilat, ayah 17)

As for Thamūd, We showed them the way, but they preferred blindness to the guidance. Therefore, they were seized by the bang of the abasing punishment because of what they used to earn.

As for Thamûd, We showed them guidance, but they preferred blindness over guidance. So the blast of a disgracing punishment overtook them for what they used to commit.

As to the Thamud, We gave them Guidance, but they preferred blindness (of heart) to Guidance; so the stunning Punishment of humiliation seized them, because of what they had earned.

As for Thamud, We bestowed guidance upon them, but they preferred to remain blind rather than be guided. At last a humiliating scourge overtook them on account of their misdeeds.

As for the (tribe of) Thamud, We tried to guide them, but they preferred blindness to guidance; then they were seized by the torment of a humiliating punishment as requital for their misdeeds;

As for (the tribe of) Thamûd, We gave them guidance, but they preferred misguidance to guidance so the scourge of a humiliating punishment seized them on account of the (bad) deeds they had done.

English Literal

And but Thamud, so We guided them so they loved/liked the blindness/misguidance more, over the guidance, so the torture the humiliating/disgraceful cry of torture/destructive torture punished/took them because of what they were gaining/acquiring .

And regarding the Thamud, We showed them the right path - so they chose to be blind above being guided, therefore the thunderbolt of the disgraceful punishment overcame them - the recompense of their deeds.

And as for Thamud, We showed and made clear to them the Path of Truth (Islamic Monotheism) through Our Messenger, (i.e. showed them the way of success), but they preferred blindness to guidance, so the Sa'iqah (a destructive awful cry, torment, hit, a thunderbolt) of disgracing torment seized them, because of what they used to earn.

So We sent on them a curious wind in unlucky days that We might make them taste the chastisement of abasement in this world’s life. And the chastisement of the Hereafter is truly more abasing, and they will not be helped.

And as to Samood, We showed them the right way, but they chose error above guidance, so there overtook them the scourge of an abasing chastisement for what they earned.

And as for Thamood, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance. So the thunderbolt of the humiliating punishment seized them, because of what they used to earn.

Tafsir jalalayn

And as for Thamd, We offered them guidance, We pointed out to them the path of guidance, but they preferred blindness, they chose disbelief [as opposed], to guidance. So the thunderbolt of the humiliating chastisement seized them on account of what they used to earn.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَيْنَاهُمْ

And as for Thamud, We showed them the path of truth.

Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, Abu Al-Aliyah, Sa`id bin Jubayr, Qatadah, As-Suddi and Ibn Zayd said,

"We explained to them."

Ath-Thawri said, "We called them."

Allah's saying;

فَاسْتَحَبُّوا الْعَمَى عَلَى الْهُدَى

but they preferred blindness to guidance;

means, `We showed them the truth and made it clear to them through the words of their Prophet Salih, but they opposed him and rejected him, and they slaughtered the she-camel of Allah which He had made a sign for them of the truth of their Prophet.'

فَأَخَذَتْهُمْ صَاعِقَةُ الْعَذَابِ الْهُونِ

so the Sa`iqah of disgracing torment seized them.

means, Allah sent upon them the Sayhah, earthquake, intense humiliation, punishment and torment.

بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ



because of what they used to earn.

means, because of their disbelief and rejection.

وَنَجَّيْنَا الَّذِينَ امَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ
