Al-Qur'an Surah An-Nisa Verse 74

So, those who sell the worldly life for the Hereafter should fight in the way of Allah. Whoever fights in the way of Allah, then gets killed or prevails, We shall give a great reward to him.

English Literal

So those who volunteer the present world/worldly life with the end (other life) should fight/kill in God`s sake, and who fights/kills in God`s sake, so he is killed or he defeats/conquers, so We will give him a great reward.

Let those who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter fight in the cause of God. Whoever fights in the cause of God, and then is killed, or achieves victory, We will grant him a great compensation.

Tafsir jalalayn

God, exalted be He, says; So let them fight in the way of God, to elevate His religion, those who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter; and whoever fights in the way of God and is slain, dies a martyr, or conquers, overcomes his enemy, We shall give him a great wage, a plentiful reward.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

فَلْيُقَاتِلْ

So fight,

the believer with an aversion (to fighting),

فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ الَّذِينَ يَشْرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا بِالاخِرَةِ

those who trade the life of this world with the Hereafter,

referring to those sell their religion for the meager goods of the world, and they only do this because of their disbelief and lack of faith.

Allah then said;

وَمَن يُقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ فَيُقْتَلْ أَو يَغْلِبْ فَسَوْفَ نُوْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا



And whoever fights in the cause of Allah, and is killed or gets victory, We shall bestow on him a great reward.

meaning, whoever fights in the cause of Allah, whether he was killed or triumphant, he will earn an immense compensation and a great reward with Allah.

The Two Sahihs recorded,

وَتَكَفَّلَ اللهُ لِلْمُجَاهِدِ فِي سَبِيلِهِ إِنْ تَوَفَّاهُ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ أَوْ يَرْجِعَهُ إِلى مَسْكَنِهِ الَّذِي خَرَجَ مِنْهُ بِمَا نَالَ مِنْ أَجْرٍ أَوْ غَنِيمَة

Allah has guaranteed the Mujahid in His cause that;

He will either bring death to him, admitting into Paradise;

or, He will help him return safely to his home with whatever reward and booty he gained.
