Al-Qur'an Surah An-Nisa Verse 73

An-Nisa [4]: 73 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَلَىِٕنْ اَصَابَكُمْ فَضْلٌ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ لَيَقُوْلَنَّ كَاَنْ لَّمْ تَكُنْۢ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهٗ مَوَدَّةٌ يّٰلَيْتَنِيْ كُنْتُ مَعَهُمْ فَاَفُوْزَ فَوْزًا عَظِيْمًا (النساء : ٤)

wala-in
وَلَئِنْ
And if
aṣābakum
أَصَٰبَكُمْ
befalls you
faḍlun
فَضْلٌ
bounty
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
layaqūlanna
لَيَقُولَنَّ
he would surely say
ka-an
كَأَن
as if
lam
لَّمْ
(had) not
takun
تَكُنۢ
there been
baynakum
بَيْنَكُمْ
between you
wabaynahu
وَبَيْنَهُۥ
and between him
mawaddatun
مَوَدَّةٌ
any affection
yālaytanī
يَٰلَيْتَنِى
"Oh! I wish
kuntu
كُنتُ
I had been
maʿahum
مَعَهُمْ
with them
fa-afūza
فَأَفُوزَ
then I would have attained
fawzan
فَوْزًا
a success
ʿaẓīman
عَظِيمًا
great"

Transliteration:

Wa la'in asaabakum fadlum minal laahi la yaqoolanna ka al lam takum bainakum wa bainahoo mawaddatuny yaa laitanee kuntu ma'ahum fa afooza fawzan 'azeemaa (QS. an-Nisāʾ:73)

English / Sahih Translation:

But if bounty comes to you from Allah, he will surely say, as if [i.e., showing that] there had never been between you and him any affection, "Oh, I wish I had been with them so I could have attained a great attainment." (QS. An-Nisa, ayah 73)

And if some bounty comes to you from Allah, he will certainly say,-as if there was no friendship between you and him- “Oh, would that I had been with them; then I would have secured a handsome gain.”

But if you return with Allah’s bounties, they will say—as if there had been no bond between you—“We wish we had been there with them to share the great gain!”

And if there betideth you grace from Allah, then, as though there had been no tenderness between you and him, he saith: would that I had been with them! then I would have achieved a mighty achievement.

But if good fortune comes to you from Allah, they would be sure to say - as if there had never been Ties of affection between you and them - "Oh! I wish I had been with them; a fine thing should I then have made of it!"

And if a bounty from Allah is given you, he says - and says as if there never was any affection between you and him - 'Oh, would that I had been with them, I would have come by a great gain.

But if success comes to you from God he will say, as though no love existed between you and him: "I wish I were with them, for I would have certainly met with great success."

And were you to receive Allah’s munificence (a bounty), he would surely say – as if there had been no friendship between you and him – “Alas – if only I had been with them, I would have achieved a great success!”

But should a bounty from Allah come to you, he will say—as if there were no [tie of friendship and] affection between you and him—‘I wish I were with them so that I had achieved a great success!’

But if some bounty from God comes to you, he is sure to say – just as if there had never been any tie of affection between you and him, (and therefore as if there had been an obstacle to his going forth with you) – "Oh, if only I had been with them, I would have come by a great gain."

And if some good fortune comes to you from Allâh he would cry, as if there were no friendship between you and him, `Would that I had been with them, had it been so I should have indeed achieved a great success.´

English Literal

And if (E) grace/blessing from God struck you, he will say (E) as if love/affection/friendship was not between you (P), and between him: "Oh, if only I were with them, so I succeed/win a great success/winning/triumph."

And were you to receive Allah’s munificence (a bounty), he would surely say - as if there had been no friendship between you and him - "Alas - if only I had been with them, I would have achieved a great success!"

What ails you that you do not fight in Allah´s way, and for the weak (oppressed) men, women and children, who cry, "Lord, rescue us from this town of oppressive people, and raise for us from Thee a Patron (or protecting friend), and raise for us from Thee a help?"

But if a bounty (victory and booty) comes to you from Allah, he would surely say - as if there had never been ties of affection between you and him - "Oh! I wish I had been with them; then I would have achieved a great success (a good share of booty)."

And among you is he would hang back. Then if a misfortune befalls you he says: Allah indeed bestowed a favour on me as I was not present with them.

But, if the Bounty of Allah reaches you, he would surely say as if there had never been any affection between you and him: 'Would that I had been with them! I should have indeed won a great triumph'

But if a bounty comes to you from Allah, he would surely say ـ as if there had never been ties of affection between you and him, "Oh! I wish I had been with them; then I would have achieved a great success."

But if, by God's grace, good fortune should be your lot, they will say, "If only I had been with them I should have achieved a great success," as if no affection had existed between you and them.

But when some bounty from God comes to you, he says—as if no affection existed between you and him—“If only I had been with them, I would have achieved a great victory.”

Tafsir jalalayn

But if (wa-la-in, the lm is for oaths) a bounty from God befalls you, such as a conquest or booty, he will surely cry, in regret, as if (ka'an is softened, its subject having been omitted, in other words [it should be] ka'annahu) there had never been (read lam yakun, or lam takun) any affection, any acquaintance or friendship, between you and him; this [statement] refers back to the words [in the previous verse] `God has been gracious to me', and comes as a parenthesis between the statement `that he will cry' and the very words he cries, which are; `Oh (y, is for exclamation), would that I had been with them, so that I might have won a great triumph!', that is, [that] I might have taken a good share of the booty.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَلَيِنْ أَصَابَكُمْ فَضْلٌ مِّنَ الله

But if a bounty comes to you from Allah,

such as victory, triumph and booty.

لَيَقُولَنَّ كَأَن لَّمْ تَكُن بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ مَوَدَّةٌ

he would surely say - as if there had never been ties of affection between you and him,

meaning, as if he was not a follower of your religion.

يَا لَيتَنِي كُنتُ مَعَهُمْ فَأَفُوزَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا



"Oh! I wish I had been with them; then I would have achieved a great success."

by being assigned a share of the booty and taking possession of that share. This is his ultimate aim and objective.
The Encouragement to Participation in Jihad

Allah then said
