Al-Qur'an Surah An-Nisa Verse 27

An-Nisa [4]: 27 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاللّٰهُ يُرِيْدُ اَنْ يَّتُوْبَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۗ وَيُرِيْدُ الَّذِيْنَ يَتَّبِعُوْنَ الشَّهَوٰتِ اَنْ تَمِيْلُوْا مَيْلًا عَظِيْمًا (النساء : ٤)

wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
yurīdu
يُرِيدُ
wishes
an
أَن
to
yatūba
يَتُوبَ
accept repentance
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
from you
wayurīdu
وَيُرِيدُ
but wish
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
yattabiʿūna
يَتَّبِعُونَ
follow
l-shahawāti
ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِ
the passions
an
أَن
that
tamīlū
تَمِيلُوا۟
you deviate -
maylan
مَيْلًا
(into) a deviation
ʿaẓīman
عَظِيمًا
great

Transliteration:

Wallaahu yureedu ai yatooba 'alaikum wa yureedul lazeena yattabi 'oonash shahawaati an tameeloo mailan 'azeemaa (QS. an-Nisāʾ:27)

English / Sahih Translation:

Allah wants to accept your repentance, but those who follow [their] passions want you to digress [into] a great deviation. (QS. An-Nisa, ayah 27)

Allah intends to turn graciously towards you, while those who follow desires want you to deviate (from the right path), a huge deviation.

God wills to turn to you (with mercy and favor by explaining to you His commandments and guiding you to the Straight Path), whereas those who follow (their) lusts (for women, offspring, wealth, fame, status, and position) desire you to deviate greatly (from the Straight Path).

Whereas Allâh desires to turn to you with mercy, those who follow (the dictates of their) lusts want you to drift far away (from the right path).

English Literal

And God wants that He forgives on you, and those who follow the lusts/desires want that you bend/sway (a) great bending/swaying.

And Allah wills to incline towards you with His mercy; and those who pursue their own pleasures wish that you be far separated from the Straight Path.

God intends to redeem you, but those who follow their desires want you to turn away utterly.

Tafsir jalalayn

And God desires to turn [forgivingly] towards you (He repeats this in order to expand upon it), but those who follow their passions, the Jews and Christians, or the Magians and adulterers, desire that you deviate with a terrible deviation, transgressing what is right by committing what has been forbidden you, so that you might be like them.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَاللّهُ يُرِيدُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْكُمْ

Allah wishes to accept your repentance,

وَيُرِيدُ الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ الشَّهَوَاتِ أَن تَمِيلُواْ مَيْلً عَظِيمًا



but those who follow their lusts, wish that you (believers) should deviate tremendously away (from the right path).

indicates that the followers of Shaytan among the Jews, Christians and the adulterous, wish that you would take the horrendous path of falsehood instead of the truth
