Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Anbya Verse 61

Al-Anbya [21]: 61 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالُوْا فَأْتُوْا بِهٖ عَلٰٓى اَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْهَدُوْنَ (الأنبياء : ٢١)

l-nāsi
ٱلنَّاسِ

laʿallahum
لَعَلَّهُمْ
so that they may
yashhadūna
يَشْهَدُونَ
bear witness"

Transliteration:

Qaaloo faatoo bihee 'alaaa a'yunin naasi la'allahum yash hadoon (QS. al-ʾAnbiyāʾ:61)

English / Sahih Translation:

They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify." (QS. Al-Anbya, ayah 61)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

They said, “Then, bring him before the eyes of the people, so that they may see”.

They demanded, “Bring him before the eyes of the people, so that they may witness ˹his trial˺.”

English Literal

They said: "So come/bring with him on the people`s eyes/sights, maybe/perhaps they witness/testify."

Tafsir jalalayn

They said, `Then bring him before the people's eyes, that is, openly, that they may testify', against him as being the perpetrator.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

They said;"Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify."

meaning, in front of a large audience so that all the people could be present. This was Ibrahim's ultimate purpose, so that he could tell this great gathering about the extent of their ignorance and how foolish they were to worship idols which could not defend themselves from harm or help themselves, so how could they ask them for help!
