(The Cow)

61

وَاِذْ قُلْتُمْ يٰمُوْسٰى لَنْ نَّصْبِرَ عَلٰى طَعَامٍ وَّاحِدٍ فَادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُخْرِجْ لَنَا مِمَّا تُنْۢبِتُ الْاَرْضُ مِنْۢ بَقْلِهَا وَقِثَّاۤىِٕهَا وَفُوْمِهَا وَعَدَسِهَا وَبَصَلِهَا ۗ قَالَ اَتَسْتَبْدِلُوْنَ الَّذِيْ هُوَ اَدْنٰى بِالَّذِيْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ ۗ اِهْبِطُوْا مِصْرًا فَاِنَّ لَكُمْ مَّا سَاَلْتُمْ ۗ وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ وَالْمَسْكَنَةُ وَبَاۤءُوْ بِغَضَبٍ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ ۗ ذٰلِكَ بِاَنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا يَكْفُرُوْنَ بِاٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ وَيَقْتُلُوْنَ النَّبِيّٖنَ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ ۗ ذٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا وَّكَانُوْا يَعْتَدُوْنَ ࣖ ٦١

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
qul'tum
قُلْتُمْ
you said
yāmūsā
يَٰمُوسَىٰ
"O Musa!
lan
لَن
Never (will)
naṣbira
نَّصْبِرَ
we endure
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
[on]
ṭaʿāmin
طَعَامٍ
food
wāḥidin
وَٰحِدٍ
(of) one (kind)
fa-ud'ʿu
فَٱدْعُ
so pray
lanā
لَنَا
for us
rabbaka
رَبَّكَ
(to) your Lord
yukh'rij
يُخْرِجْ
to bring forth
lanā
لَنَا
for us
mimmā
مِمَّا
out of what
tunbitu
تُنۢبِتُ
grows
l-arḍu
ٱلْأَرْضُ
the earth
min
مِنۢ
of
baqlihā
بَقْلِهَا
its herbs
waqithāihā
وَقِثَّآئِهَا
[and] its cucumbers
wafūmihā
وَفُومِهَا
[and] its garlic
waʿadasihā
وَعَدَسِهَا
[and] its lentils
wabaṣalihā
وَبَصَلِهَاۖ
and its onions"
qāla
قَالَ
He said
atastabdilūna
أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ
"Would you exchange
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
that which
huwa
هُوَ
[it]
adnā
أَدْنَىٰ
(is) inferior
bi-alladhī
بِٱلَّذِى
for that which
huwa
هُوَ
[it]
khayrun
خَيْرٌۚ
(is) better?
ih'biṭū
ٱهْبِطُوا۟
Go down
miṣ'ran
مِصْرًا
(to) a city
fa-inna
فَإِنَّ
so indeed
lakum
لَكُم
for you
مَّا
(is) what
sa-altum
سَأَلْتُمْۗ
you have asked (for)"
waḍuribat
وَضُرِبَتْ
And were struck
ʿalayhimu
عَلَيْهِمُ
on them
l-dhilatu
ٱلذِّلَّةُ
the humiliation
wal-maskanatu
وَٱلْمَسْكَنَةُ
and the misery
wabāū
وَبَآءُو
and they drew on themselves
bighaḍabin
بِغَضَبٍ
wrath
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِۗ
Allah
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That (was)
bi-annahum
بِأَنَّهُمْ
because they
kānū
كَانُوا۟
used to
yakfurūna
يَكْفُرُونَ
disbelieve
biāyāti
بِـَٔايَٰتِ
in (the) Signs
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
wayaqtulūna
وَيَقْتُلُونَ
and kill
l-nabiyīna
ٱلنَّبِيِّۦنَ
the Prophets
bighayri
بِغَيْرِ
without (any)
l-ḥaqi
ٱلْحَقِّۗ
[the] right
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
bimā
بِمَا
(was) because
ʿaṣaw
عَصَوا۟
they disobeyed
wakānū
وَّكَانُوا۟
and they were
yaʿtadūna
يَعْتَدُونَ
transgressing
And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 61)
Tafsir
62

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَالَّذِيْنَ هَادُوْا وَالنَّصٰرٰى وَالصَّابِــِٕيْنَ مَنْ اٰمَنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْاٰخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلَهُمْ اَجْرُهُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْۚ وَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُوْنَ ٦٢

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
believed
wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
and those who
hādū
هَادُوا۟
became Jews
wal-naṣārā
وَٱلنَّصَٰرَىٰ
and the Christians
wal-ṣābiīna
وَٱلصَّٰبِـِٔينَ
and the Sabians -
man
مَنْ
who
āmana
ءَامَنَ
believed
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
in Allah
wal-yawmi
وَٱلْيَوْمِ
and the Day
l-ākhiri
ٱلْءَاخِرِ
[the] Last
waʿamila
وَعَمِلَ
and did
ṣāliḥan
صَٰلِحًا
righteous deeds
falahum
فَلَهُمْ
so for them
ajruhum
أَجْرُهُمْ
(is) their reward
ʿinda
عِندَ
with
rabbihim
رَبِّهِمْ
their Lord
walā
وَلَا
and no
khawfun
خَوْفٌ
fear
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
on them
walā
وَلَا
and not
hum
هُمْ
they
yaḥzanūna
يَحْزَنُونَ
will grieve
Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans [before Prophet Muhammad (^)] – those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness – will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 62)
Tafsir
63

وَاِذْ اَخَذْنَا مِيْثَاقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّوْرَۗ خُذُوْا مَآ اٰتَيْنٰكُمْ بِقُوَّةٍ وَّاذْكُرُوْا مَا فِيْهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُوْنَ ٦٣

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
akhadhnā
أَخَذْنَا
We took
mīthāqakum
مِيثَٰقَكُمْ
your covenant
warafaʿnā
وَرَفَعْنَا
and We raised
fawqakumu
فَوْقَكُمُ
over you
l-ṭūra
ٱلطُّورَ
the mount
khudhū
خُذُوا۟
"Hold
مَآ
what
ātaynākum
ءَاتَيْنَٰكُم
We have given you
biquwwatin
بِقُوَّةٍ
with strength
wa-udh'kurū
وَٱذْكُرُوا۟
and remember
مَا
what
fīhi
فِيهِ
(is) in it
laʿallakum
لَعَلَّكُمْ
perhaps you
tattaqūna
تَتَّقُونَ
(would become) righteous"
And [recall] when We took your covenant, [O Children of Israel, to abide by the Torah] and We raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that perhaps you may become righteous." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 63)
Tafsir
64

ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ مِّنْۢ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ فَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهٗ لَكُنْتُمْ مِّنَ الْخٰسِرِيْنَ ٦٤

ثُمَّ
Then
tawallaytum
تَوَلَّيْتُم
you turned away
min
مِّنۢ
from
baʿdi
بَعْدِ
after
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَۖ
that
falawlā
فَلَوْلَا
So if not
faḍlu
فَضْلُ
(for the) Grace
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
upon you
waraḥmatuhu
وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ
and His Mercy
lakuntum
لَكُنتُم
surely you would have been
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-khāsirīna
ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ
the losers
Then you turned away after that. And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 64)
Tafsir
65

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ الَّذِيْنَ اعْتَدَوْا مِنْكُمْ فِى السَّبْتِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُوْنُوْا قِرَدَةً خَاسِـِٕيْنَ ٦٥

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And indeed
ʿalim'tumu
عَلِمْتُمُ
you knew
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
iʿ'tadaw
ٱعْتَدَوْا۟
transgressed
minkum
مِنكُمْ
among you
فِى
in
l-sabti
ٱلسَّبْتِ
the (matter of) Sabbath
faqul'nā
فَقُلْنَا
So We said
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
kūnū
كُونُوا۟
"Be
qiradatan
قِرَدَةً
apes
khāsiīna
خَٰسِـِٔينَ
despised"
And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 65)
Tafsir
66

فَجَعَلْنٰهَا نَكَالًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا وَمَا خَلْفَهَا وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِيْنَ ٦٦

fajaʿalnāhā
فَجَعَلْنَٰهَا
So We made it
nakālan
نَكَٰلًا
a deterrent punishment
limā
لِّمَا
for those
bayna
بَيْنَ
(in) front
yadayhā
يَدَيْهَا
(of) them
wamā
وَمَا
and those
khalfahā
خَلْفَهَا
after them
wamawʿiẓatan
وَمَوْعِظَةً
and an admonition
lil'muttaqīna
لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
for those who fear (Allah)
And We made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them] and a lesson for those who fear Allah. (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 66)
Tafsir
67

وَاِذْ قَالَ مُوْسٰى لِقَوْمِهٖٓ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ اَنْ تَذْبَحُوْا بَقَرَةً ۗ قَالُوْٓا اَتَتَّخِذُنَا هُزُوًا ۗ قَالَ اَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ اَنْ اَكُوْنَ مِنَ الْجٰهِلِيْنَ ٦٧

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
qāla
قَالَ
said
mūsā
مُوسَىٰ
Musa
liqawmihi
لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ
to his people
inna
إِنَّ
"Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
yamurukum
يَأْمُرُكُمْ
commands you
an
أَن
that
tadhbaḥū
تَذْبَحُوا۟
you slaughter
baqaratan
بَقَرَةًۖ
a cow"
qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
They said
atattakhidhunā
أَتَتَّخِذُنَا
"Do you take us
huzuwan
هُزُوًاۖ
(in) ridicule"
qāla
قَالَ
He said
aʿūdhu
أَعُوذُ
"I seek refuge
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
in Allah
an
أَنْ
that
akūna
أَكُونَ
I be
mina
مِنَ
among
l-jāhilīna
ٱلْجَٰهِلِينَ
the ignorant"
And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 67)
Tafsir
68

قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّنْ لَّنَا مَا هِيَ ۗ قَالَ اِنَّهٗ يَقُوْلُ اِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا فَارِضٌ وَّلَا بِكْرٌۗ عَوَانٌۢ بَيْنَ ذٰلِكَ ۗ فَافْعَلُوْا مَا تُؤْمَرُوْنَ ٦٨

قَالُوا۟
They said
ud'ʿu
ٱدْعُ
"Pray
lanā
لَنَا
for us
rabbaka
رَبَّكَ
(to) your Lord
yubayyin
يُبَيِّن
to make clear
lanā
لَّنَا
to us
مَا
what
hiya
هِىَۚ
it (is)"
qāla
قَالَ
He said
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
"Indeed He
yaqūlu
يَقُولُ
says
innahā
إِنَّهَا
"[Indeed] it
baqaratun
بَقَرَةٌ
(is) a cow
لَّا
not
fāriḍun
فَارِضٌ
old
walā
وَلَا
and not
bik'run
بِكْرٌ
young
ʿawānun
عَوَانٌۢ
middle aged
bayna
بَيْنَ
between
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَۖ
that"
fa-if'ʿalū
فَٱفْعَلُوا۟
so do
مَا
what
tu'marūna
تُؤْمَرُونَ
you are commanded"
They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Moses] said, "[Allah] says, 'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that,' so do what you are commanded." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 68)
Tafsir
69

قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّنْ لَّنَا مَا لَوْنُهَا ۗ قَالَ اِنَّهٗ يَقُوْلُ اِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ صَفْرَاۤءُ فَاقِعٌ لَّوْنُهَا تَسُرُّ النّٰظِرِيْنَ ٦٩

قَالُوا۟
They said
ud'ʿu
ٱدْعُ
"Pray
lanā
لَنَا
for us
rabbaka
رَبَّكَ
(to) your Lord
yubayyin
يُبَيِّن
to make clear
lanā
لَّنَا
to us
مَا
what
lawnuhā
لَوْنُهَاۚ
(is) its color"
qāla
قَالَ
He said
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
"Indeed He
yaqūlu
يَقُولُ
says
innahā
إِنَّهَا
[Indeed] it is
baqaratun
بَقَرَةٌ
a cow
ṣafrāu
صَفْرَآءُ
yellow
fāqiʿun
فَاقِعٌ
bright
lawnuhā
لَّوْنُهَا
(in) its color
tasurru
تَسُرُّ
pleasing
l-nāẓirīna
ٱلنَّٰظِرِينَ
(to) those who see (it)
They said, "Call upon your Lord to show us what is her color." He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in color – pleasing to the observers.'" (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 69)
Tafsir
70

قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّنْ لَّنَا مَا هِيَۙ اِنَّ الْبَقَرَ تَشٰبَهَ عَلَيْنَاۗ وَاِنَّآ اِنْ شَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ لَمُهْتَدُوْنَ ٧٠

قَالُوا۟
They said
ud'ʿu
ٱدْعُ
"Pray
lanā
لَنَا
for us
rabbaka
رَبَّكَ
(to) your Lord
yubayyin
يُبَيِّن
to make clear
lanā
لَّنَا
to us
مَا
what
hiya
هِىَ
it (is)
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-baqara
ٱلْبَقَرَ
[the] cows
tashābaha
تَشَٰبَهَ
look alike
ʿalaynā
عَلَيْنَا
to us
wa-innā
وَإِنَّآ
And indeed we
in
إِن
if
shāa
شَآءَ
wills
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
lamuh'tadūna
لَمُهْتَدُونَ
(will) surely be those who are guided"
They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, [all] cows look alike to us. And indeed we, if Allah wills, will be guided." (QS. [2] Al-Baqarah: 70)
