Surah Al-Kahf - Word by Word

(The Cave)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْٓ اَنْزَلَ عَلٰى عَبْدِهِ الْكِتٰبَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ لَّهٗ عِوَجًا ۜ ١

al-ḥamdu
ٱلْحَمْدُ
All Praise
lillahi
لِلَّهِ
(is) for Allah
alladhī
ٱلَّذِىٓ
the One Who
anzala
أَنزَلَ
(has) revealed
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
to
ʿabdihi
عَبْدِهِ
His slave
l-kitāba
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the Book
walam
وَلَمْ
and not
yajʿal
يَجْعَل
(has) made
lahu
لَّهُۥ
in it
ʿiwajā
عِوَجَاۜ
any crookedness
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant [Muhammad (r)] the Book and has not made therein any deviance. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 1)
Tafsir
2

قَيِّمًا لِّيُنْذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيْدًا مِّنْ لَّدُنْهُ وَيُبَشِّرَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ الَّذِيْنَ يَعْمَلُوْنَ الصّٰلِحٰتِ اَنَّ لَهُمْ اَجْرًا حَسَنًاۙ ٢

qayyiman
قَيِّمًا
Straight
liyundhira
لِّيُنذِرَ
to warn
basan
بَأْسًا
(of) a punishment
shadīdan
شَدِيدًا
severe
min
مِّن
from
ladun'hu
لَّدُنْهُ
near Him
wayubashira
وَيُبَشِّرَ
and give glad tidings
l-mu'minīna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
(to) the believers
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
yaʿmalūna
يَعْمَلُونَ
do
l-ṣāliḥāti
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ
righteous deeds
anna
أَنَّ
that
lahum
لَهُمْ
for them
ajran
أَجْرًا
(is) a good reward
ḥasanan
حَسَنًا
(is) a good reward
[He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward [i.e., Paradise]. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 2)
Tafsir
3

مَّاكِثِيْنَ فِيْهِ اَبَدًاۙ ٣

mākithīna
مَّٰكِثِينَ
(They will) abide
fīhi
فِيهِ
in it
abadan
أَبَدًا
forever
In which they will remain forever (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 3)
Tafsir
4

وَّيُنْذِرَ الَّذِيْنَ قَالُوا اتَّخَذَ اللّٰهُ وَلَدًاۖ ٤

wayundhira
وَيُنذِرَ
And to warn
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
qālū
قَالُوا۟
say
ittakhadha
ٱتَّخَذَ
"Allah has taken
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
"Allah has taken
waladan
وَلَدًا
a son"
And to warn those who say, "Allah has taken a son". (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 4)
Tafsir

مَّا لَهُمْ بِهٖ مِنْ عِلْمٍ وَّلَا لِاٰبَاۤىِٕهِمْۗ كَبُرَتْ كَلِمَةً تَخْرُجُ مِنْ اَفْوَاهِهِمْۗ اِنْ يَّقُوْلُوْنَ اِلَّا كَذِبًا ٥

مَّا
Not
lahum
لَهُم
they have
bihi
بِهِۦ
about it
min
مِنْ
any
ʿil'min
عِلْمٍ
knowledge
walā
وَلَا
and not
liābāihim
لِءَابَآئِهِمْۚ
their forefathers
kaburat
كَبُرَتْ
Mighty (is)
kalimatan
كَلِمَةً
the word
takhruju
تَخْرُجُ
(that) comes out
min
مِنْ
of
afwāhihim
أَفْوَٰهِهِمْۚ
their mouths
in
إِن
Not
yaqūlūna
يَقُولُونَ
they say
illā
إِلَّا
except
kadhiban
كَذِبًا
a lie
They have no knowledge of it, nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 5)
Tafsir
6

فَلَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ عَلٰٓى اٰثَارِهِمْ اِنْ لَّمْ يُؤْمِنُوْا بِهٰذَا الْحَدِيْثِ اَسَفًا ٦

falaʿallaka
فَلَعَلَّكَ
Then perhaps you would (be)
bākhiʿun
بَٰخِعٌ
the one who kills
nafsaka
نَّفْسَكَ
yourself
ʿalā
عَلَىٰٓ
over
āthārihim
ءَاثَٰرِهِمْ
their footsteps
in
إِن
if
lam
لَّمْ
not
yu'minū
يُؤْمِنُوا۟
they believe
bihādhā
بِهَٰذَا
in this
l-ḥadīthi
ٱلْحَدِيثِ
[the] narration
asafan
أَسَفًا
(in) grief
Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 6)
Tafsir

اِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الْاَرْضِ زِيْنَةً لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ اَيُّهُمْ اَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ٧

innā
إِنَّا
Indeed We
jaʿalnā
جَعَلْنَا
We have made
مَا
what
ʿalā
عَلَى
(is) on
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
zīnatan
زِينَةً
adornment
lahā
لَّهَا
for it
linabluwahum
لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ
that We may test [them]
ayyuhum
أَيُّهُمْ
which of them
aḥsanu
أَحْسَنُ
(is) best
ʿamalan
عَمَلًا
(in) deed
Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 7)
Tafsir
8

وَاِنَّا لَجَاعِلُوْنَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيْدًا جُرُزًاۗ ٨

wa-innā
وَإِنَّا
And indeed We
lajāʿilūna
لَجَٰعِلُونَ
(will) surely make
مَا
what
ʿalayhā
عَلَيْهَا
(is) on it
ṣaʿīdan
صَعِيدًا
soil
juruzan
جُرُزًا
barren
And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground. (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 8)
Tafsir

اَمْ حَسِبْتَ اَنَّ اَصْحٰبَ الْكَهْفِ وَالرَّقِيْمِ كَانُوْا مِنْ اٰيٰتِنَا عَجَبًا ٩

am
أَمْ
Or
ḥasib'ta
حَسِبْتَ
you think
anna
أَنَّ
that
aṣḥāba
أَصْحَٰبَ
(the) companions
l-kahfi
ٱلْكَهْفِ
(of) the cave
wal-raqīmi
وَٱلرَّقِيمِ
and the inscription
kānū
كَانُوا۟
were
min
مِنْ
among
āyātinā
ءَايَٰتِنَا
Our Signs
ʿajaban
عَجَبًا
a wonder?
Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder? (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 9)
Tafsir

اِذْ اَوَى الْفِتْيَةُ اِلَى الْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوْا رَبَّنَآ اٰتِنَا مِنْ لَّدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً وَّهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ اَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا ١٠

l-fit'yatu
ٱلْفِتْيَةُ
the youths
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-kahfi
ٱلْكَهْفِ
the cave
faqālū
فَقَالُوا۟
and they said
rabbanā
رَبَّنَآ
"Our Lord!
ātinā
ءَاتِنَا
Grant us
min
مِن
from
ladunka
لَّدُنكَ
Yourself
raḥmatan
رَحْمَةً
Mercy
wahayyi
وَهَيِّئْ
and facilitate
lanā
لَنَا
for us
min
مِنْ
[from]
amrinā
أَمْرِنَا
our affair
rashadan
رَشَدًا
(in the) right way"
[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance." (QS. [18] Al-Kahf: 10)
