Al-Qur'an Surah Yusuf Verse 75

Yusuf [12]: 75 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالُوْا جَزَاۤؤُهٗ مَنْ وُّجِدَ فِيْ رَحْلِهٖ فَهُوَ جَزَاۤؤُهٗ ۗ كَذٰلِكَ نَجْزِى الظّٰلِمِيْنَ (يوسف : ١٢)

جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥۚ
(will be) his recompense
kadhālika
كَذَٰلِكَ
Thus
najzī
نَجْزِى
(do) we recompense
l-ẓālimīna
ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
the wrongdoers"

Transliteration:

Qaaloo jazaaa'uhoo manw wujida fee rahlihee fahuwa jazaaa'uh; kazaalika najziz zaalimeen (QS. Yūsuf:75)

English / Sahih Translation:

[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found – he [himself] will be its recompense. Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers." (QS. Yusuf, ayah 75)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

They said, “Its punishment? The one in whose saddlebag it is found shall himself be the punishment. This is how we punish the wrongdoers.”

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Joseph’s brothers responded, “The price will be ˹the enslavement of˺ the one in whose bag the cup is found. That is how we punish the wrongdoers.”

They said, “The punishment is that the one in whose saddlebag it is found should be enslaved in recompense. This is how we punish the wrongdoers.”

They said, 'This shall be its recompense -- in whoever's saddlebag the goblet is found, he shall be its recompense. So we recompense the evildoers.'

and they answered, ‘The penalty will be [the enslavement of] the person in whose bag the cup is found: this is how we punish wrongdoers.’

They said: his meed shall be that he, in whose pack it is found, shall himself be recompense thereof. Thus we reccmpense the wrong- doers.

They said; "The penalty should be that he in whose saddle-bag it is found, should be held (as bondman) to atone for the (crime). Thus it is we punish the wrong-doers!"

Abul Ala Maududi

They replied: "He in whose saddlebag the cup is found, he himself shall be its recompense." Thus do we punish the wrong-doers.

Ahmed Ali

"The punishment for that (should be)," they said, "that he in whose luggage it is found should be held as punishment. This is how we repay the wrong-doers."

Ahmed Raza Khan

They said, “The punishment for it is that he in whose bag it shall be found, shall himself become a slave for it; this is how we punish the unjust.”

Ali Quli Qarai

They said, ‘The requital for it shall be that he in whose saddlebag it is found shall give himself over as its requital. Thus do we requite the wrongdoers.’

Ali Ünal

They said: "The penalty for it is: the (freedom of the) one in whose saddlebag it is found is the penalty for it. That is how we recompense the wrongdoers (who steal)."

Amatul Rahman Omar

They replied, `The punishment for this is that he in whose saddle-bag this (vessel) is found shall himself be the penalty for it (and so he himself shall be confiscated as its forfeit). This is how we punish the wrong doers.´

English Literal

They said: "His reward whom (it) is found in his packsaddle, so it is his reward ." As/like that We reimburse the unjust/oppressive.

Faridul Haque

They said, "The punishment for it is that he in whose bag it shall be found, shall himself become a slave for it; this is how we punish the unjust."

Hamid S. Aziz

They said, "And what shall be the penalty thereof if you prove to be liars?"

Hilali & Khan

They [Yusuf's (Joseph) brothers] said: "The penalty should be that he, in whose bag it is found, should be held for the punishment (of the crime). Thus we punish the Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)!"

Maulana Mohammad Ali

They said: But what is the penalty for this, if you are liars?

Mohammad Habib Shakir

They said: The requital of this is that the person in whose bag it is found shall himself be (held for) the satisfaction thereof; thus do we punish the wrongdoers.

They said: The penalty for it! He in whose bag (the cup) is found, he is the penalty for it. Thus we requite wrong-doers.

Joseph's brothers replied, "In whosoever baggage it is found, that person will be your bondsman. Thus is the punishment of the unjust."

Qaribullah & Darwish

They replied: 'Its recompense in whosoever's saddle bag it is found, he shall be its recompense. As such we punish the harmdoers'

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

They [Yusuf's brothers] said: "His penalty should be that he, in whose bag it is found, should be held for the punishment (of the crime). Thus we punish the wrongdoers!"

Wahiduddin Khan

They replied, "The penalty should be that he in whose saddlebag it is found, should be held [as bondman] to atone for the crime. That is how we punish the wrongdoers."

Talal Itani

They said, “His punishment, if it is found in his bag: he will belong to you. Thus we penalize the guilty.”

Tafsir jalalayn

They said, `His requital (ql jaz'uhu; the subject, the predicate of which is [the following, man wujida f rahlihi) shall be [the requital of] him in whose saddlebag it is found, that he be enslaved -- this is then reiterated by His words; He, the thief, shall be the requital for it, that is, [for] the stolen item, and nothing else; this was the customary practice of the family of Jacob. Thus, [with such] a requital, do we requite those who do evil', through theft. They thus permitted Joseph to have their saddlebags searched.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

They said;"His penalty should be that he, in whose bag it is found, should be held for the punishment. Thus we punish the wrongdoers!"

This was the law of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, that the thief be given as a slave to the victim of theft. This is what Yusuf wanted, and this is why he started with their bags first before his brother's bag, to perfect the plot
