Ali Ünal

They (the polytheists) assert that God has taken to Himself a child. All-Glorified is He; He is Self-Sufficient (beyond any need of anything). To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. You have no authority, nor evidence, for this (assertion). Are you, then, saying things about God that you do not know (anything about)?

Amatul Rahman Omar

(Some of) these people (have gone so far as to) say, `Allâh has taken to Him a son?´ Holy is He! He is Self-Sufficient. Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth belongs to Him. You have no authority for (attributing) this (to Him). Do you attribute to Allâh what you do not know (yourselves)?

English Literal

He it is who made for you the night, that you might rest therein, and the day to see therein; in that, verily, are signs unto a people who heed.

Hilali & Khan

They (Jews, Christians and pagans) say: "Allah has begotten a son (children)." Glory be to Him! He is Rich (Free of all wants). His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. No warrant you have for this. Do you say against Allah what you know not.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

He it is Who made for you the night that you might rest therein and the day giving light. Surely in this are signs for a people who hear.

And they said, “God has taken a son.” Be He glorified. He is the Self-Sufficient. His is everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Do you have any proof for this? Or are you saying about God what you do not know?

Tafsir jalalayn

They, that is, the Jews and the Christians, and those who claim that the angels are the daughters of God, say, `God has taken [to Him] a son'. God, exalted be He, says to them; Glory be to Him!, [in affirmation of] His transcending having offspring. He is Independent, [without need] of anyone, for only he who has need of a child would desire [to have] one. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, as possessions, creatures and servants. You have no warrant, [no] proof, for this, that you say. Do you say about God what you do not know? (an interrogative meant as a rebuke).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Allah is Far Above taking a Wife or having Children

Allah tells;

They say;"Allah has begotten a son."

Allah criticizes those who claim that He has,

begotten a son. Glory is to Him! He is Rich (Free of all needs).

He is Greater than that and above it. He is Self-Sufficient, free of want or need of anything. Everything else is in desperate need of Him,

His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth.

So how can He have a son from what He has created! Everything and everyone belongs to Him and is His servant.

No warrant have you for this,

Meaning, you have no proof for the lies and falsehood that you claim,

Do you say against Allah what you know not.

This is a severe threat and a firm warning.

Similarly, Allah threatened and said;

And they say;"The Most Gracious has begotten a son."

Indeed you have brought forth a terribly evil thing. Whereby the heavens are almost torn, and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins, that they ascribe a son to the Most Gracious. But it is not suitable for the Most Gracious that He should beget a son.

There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto the Most Gracious as a servant. Verily, He knows each one of them, and has counted them a full counting. And everyone of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection. (19;88-95)
