Yunus [10]: 49 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قُلْ لَّآ اَمْلِكُ لِنَفْسِيْ ضَرًّا وَّلَا نَفْعًا اِلَّا مَا شَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ ۗ لِكُلِّ اُمَّةٍ اَجَلٌ ۚاِذَا جَاۤءَ اَجَلُهُمْ فَلَا يَسْتَأْخِرُوْنَ سَاعَةً وَّلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُوْنَ (يونس : ١٠)

Transliteration:

Qul laaa amliku linafsee darranw wa laa naf'an illaa maa shaaa'al laah; likulli ummatin ajalun izaa jaaa'a ajaluhum falaaa yastaakhiroona saa'a tanw wa laa yastaqdimoon (QS. al-Yūnus:49)

English / Sahih Translation:

Say, "I possess not for myself any harm or benefit except what Allah should will. For every nation is a [specified] term. When their time has come, then they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it]." (QS. Yunus, ayah 49)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Say, “I have no power to bring a harm or a benefit to myself, except what Allah wills. For every people there is an appointed time. When their time comes, they are not able to put it off for a moment, nor are they able to go ahead of it.”

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I have no power to benefit or protect myself, except by the Will of Allah.” For each community there is an appointed term. When their time arrives, they cannot delay it for a moment, nor could they advance it.

Say, “I have no power to harm or benefit myself, except by the Will of Allah.” For every people there is an appointed term; when their time comes, they can neither delay it for a moment, nor can they bring it forward.

Tell them: 'I have no power to harm or benefit even myself, except what Allah may will. There is an appointed term for every people; and when the end of their term comes, neither can they put it off for an hour, nor can they bring it an hour before.

Say: "I have no power over my own gain or loss other than what God may please." Every people have a certain term. When their time is come they can neither delay it an hour nor advance it a moment forward.

Say, “I have no autonomy to benefit or hurt myself, except what Allah wills*; for every nation is a fixed promise; when their promise comes, they cannot postpone it nor can they advance it one moment. (* To empower me.)

Say, ‘I have no control over any benefit for myself nor [over] any harm except what Allah may wish. There is a time for every nation: when their time comes, they shall not defer it by a single hour nor shall they advance it.’

Say (O Messenger): "I have no power to harm or benefit myself, except by God’s will. For every community there is an appointed term; and when the end of the term falls in, they can neither delay it by any period of time, however short, nor can they hasten it."

Amatul Rahman Omar

Say, `I have no power to hurt or to do good to myself. It shall happen as Allâh will. There is a term appointed for every nation (for the recompense of their actions). When their term comes they cannot remain behind (it) a single moment (to escape from it), nor can they get ahead (of it to avoid it).´

English Literal

Say: "I do not own/possess to myself harm and nor benefit/usefulness except, what God willed/wanted, to every/each nation/generation (is) a term/time, if their term/time came, so they do not delay/lag behind an hour, and nor advance/precede ."

Say, “I have no autonomy to benefit or hurt myself, except what Allah wills *; for every nation is a fixed promise; when their promise comes, they cannot postpone it or can they advance it one moment. (* To empower me.)

But they say, "When will this promise come to pass, if you tell the truth?"

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "I have no power over any harm or profit to myself except what Allah may will. For every Ummah (a community or a nation), there is a term appointed; when their term is reached, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment)." (Tafsir Al-Qurtubi).

And they say: When will this promise be fulfilled, if you are truthful?

(Muhammad), tell them, "I have no control over my suffering or benefits unless God wills. Every nation is destined to live for an appointed time. They can neither delay that time nor can they cause it to come sooner.

Say: "I have no power over any harm or profit for myself except what Allah may will. For every Ummah, there is a term appointed; when their term comes, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment)."

Say, "I have no control over any harm or benefit to myself, except by the will of God. For every people, however, there is an appointed term. When the end of their term arrives, they cannot postpone it for an hour, nor can they advance it."

Say, “I have no power to harm or benefit myself, except as God wills. To every nation is an appointed time. Then, when their time arrives, they can neither postpone it by one hour, nor advance it.

Tafsir jalalayn

Say; `I have no power to, avert, hurt, from, myself, or to, bring, benefit, except as God might will, to give me power over; so how could I possess the power to bring about the chastisement? For every community there is an appointed time, a fixed period until they perish. When their time comes, they cannot put it off, they will not miss it, by a single hour, nor bring it forward, [nor] overtake it'.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قُل لاَّ أَمْلِكُ لِنَفْسِي ضَرًّا وَلَا نَفْعًا


Say;"I have no power over any harm or profit to myself."

I will not say except what He has taught me. I also have no authority over anything that Allah has not shown to me. I am Allah's servant and His Messenger to you. I was told that the Hour is going to come, but He has not told me when it will occur.

إِلاَّ مَا شَاء اللّهُ

except what Allah may will.

لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌ

For every Ummah, there is a term appointed;

meaning that for every generation or community there is a set term appointed for them.

إِذَا جَاء أَجَلُهُمْ

when their term comes,

When the end of that term approaches,

فَلَ يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ سَاعَةً وَلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ



neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment).

This is similar to what Allah said in another Ayah;

وَلَن يُوَخِّرَ اللَّهُ نَفْساً إِذَا جَأءَ أَجَلُهَأ

And Allah grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. (63;11)

Allah instructed His Messenger to tell the people that His punishment would come suddenly. He said;
