Al-Qur'an Surah At-Tawbah Verse 92

Nor (is there any blame) on those who, when they came to you so that you might provide them with a carrier (that they could ride for Jihād ) and you said (to them), “I find no carrier to give to you”, went back with their eyes flowing with tears in grief, because they had nothing to spend.

Nor ˹is there any blame on˺ those who came to you ˹O Prophet˺ for mounts, then when you said, “I can find no mounts for you,” they left with eyes overflowing with tears out of grief that they had nothing to contribute.

Nor will they be blamed who came to you for transport, to whom you said: "I cannot find any means of conveyance for you," and they went away in tears, grieving that they lacked the means to spend (on carriage).

Nor [is there any blame] on those to whom, when they came to you to provide them with a mount, you said, ‘I do not find any mount for you,’ and they turned back, their eyes flowing with tears, grieved because they did not find any means to spend.

Nor (a blame lies) on those whom when they came to you ( Prophet! with the request) that you should mount them, you said, `I find not whereon I may mount you.´ They then turned away (helpless as they were) while their eyes were overflowing with tears of grief because they could find nothing that they could spend.

English Literal

And nor on those when/if they came to you to carry/bear them, you said: "I do not find what I carry you on it." They turned away and their eyes flow/over flow from the tears, sadness/grief that they not find what they (can) spend.

Those who come to you, (Muhammad), asking to be taken to the battle, but you cannot find the necessary means for them, are exempt from the duty of fighting for the cause of God, even though they leave you with their eyes flooded with tears because of not being able to help the cause of God.

Nor shall those who came to you to be provided with mounts. And when you said: 'I can find no mounts for you' they turned back, their eyes streaming with tears grieving that they could not find the means to spend.

Nor (is there blame) on those who came to you to be provided with mounts, when you said: "I can find no mounts for you," they turned back, with their eyes overflowing with tears of grief that they could not find anything to spend.

Nor [does any blame] attach to those who came to you to be provided with mounts, and when you said, "I can find no mounts for you," they went back, and tears welled up in their eyes with sadness, since they could not find any way to contribute.

Nor on those who approach you, wishing to ride with you, and you said, “I have nothing to carry you on.” So they went away, with their eyes overflowing with tears, sorrowing for not finding the means to spend.

Tafsir jalalayn

Nor against those who, when they came to you so that you might give them a mount, [to ride] with you on the raid -- these were seven men of the Ansr; but it is also said that they were the Ban Muqrin -- you having said to them, `I cannot find [a mount] whereon to mount you' (this [last sentence] is a circumstantial qualifier), turned back (this is the response to the [clause beginning with] idh, `when'), that is, they departed, their eyes flowing, pouring, with tears (min al-dam`i; min is explicative) for sorrow that they could not find the means to expend, for the [campaign] struggle.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ إِذَا مَا أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ



Nor (is there blame) on those who came to you to be provided with mounts,

Mujahid said;

"It was revealed about Bani Muqarrin from the tribe of Muzaynah."

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Al-Hasan said that the Messenger of Allah said,

لَقَدْ خَلَّفْتُمْ بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَقْوَامًا مَا أَنْفَقْتُمْ مِنْ نَفَقَةٍ وَلَا قَطَعْتُمْ وَادِيًا وَلَا نِلْتُمْ مِنْ عَدُوَ نَيْلً إِلاَّ وَقَدْ شَرَكُوكُمْ فِي الاَْجْر

Some people have remained behind you in Al-Madinah; and you never spent anything, crossed a valley, or afflicted hardship on an enemy, but they were sharing the reward with you.

He then recited the Ayah,

وَلَا عَلَى الَّذِينَ إِذَا مَا أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ

قُلْتَ لَا أَجِدُ مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ

Nor (is there blame) on those who came to you to be provided with mounts, when you said;"I can find no mounts for you."

This Hadith has a basis in the Two Sahihs from Anas, the Messenger of Allah said,

إِنَّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَقْوَامًا مَا قَطَعْتُمْ وَادِيًا وَلَا سِرْتُمْ سَيْرًا إِلاَّ وَهُمْ مَعَكُم

Some people have remained behind in Al-Madinah and you never crossed a valley or marched forth, but they were with you.

They said, "While they are still at Al-Madinah?"

He said,

نَعَمْ حَبَسَهُمُ الْعُذْر

Yes, as they have been held back by a (legal) excuse.

تَوَلَّواْ وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلاَّ يَجِدُواْ مَا يُنفِقُونَ



they turned back, with their eyes overflowing with tears of grief that they could not find anything to spend.

Then Allah says;
