Al-Qur'an Surah At-Tawbah Verse 77

Mufti Taqi Usmani

So Allah, in turn, put hypocrisy in their hearts till the day they shall meet Him, because they broke their promise with Allah, and because they have been telling lies.

Consequently He has punished them by infesting their hearts with hypocrisy lasting till the day they shall meet Him. (This was) because they broke their word to Allâh which they had given Him and because they indulged in lies.

English Literal

So hypocrisy in their hearts/minds followed/succeeded them to a day they meet/find Him because (of) what they broke (their promise to) God (in) what they promised Him, and because (of) what they were lying/denying .

So following this, Allah put hypocrisy in their hearts until the day when they will meet Him - the result of their breaching the promise made to Allah, and because they lied.

So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts, until the Day they face Him—because they broke their promise to God, and because they used to lie.

Tafsir jalalayn

So He made the consequence in their case hypocrisy, fixed, in their hearts, until the day they meet Him, that is, God, on the Day of Resurrection, because they failed God in what they promised Him and because, of that concerning which, they lied; he [Tha`laba] then brought [the payment of] his alms to the Prophet (s), who said to him, `God has forbidden me to accept [it] from you'; so he [Tha`laba] began to throw earth on his head [in remorse]. He then approached Ab Bakr with it, who did not accept it. He then went to `Umar [b. al-Khattb], who also did not accept it. He went to `Uthmn [b. `Affn], but he did not accept it; he died during the latter's reign.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَى يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُ



And of them are some who made a covenant with Allah (saying);"If He bestowed on us of His bounty, we will verily, give Sadaqah and will be certainly among the righteous."

Then when He gave them of His bounty, they became stingy, and turned away, averse. So He punished them by putting hypocrisy into their hearts till the Day whereon they shall meet Him,

Allah says, some hypocrites give Allah their strongest oaths that if He enriches them from His bounty, they will give away alms and be among the righteous. However, they did not fulfill their vows or say the truth with their words. The consequence of this action is that hypocrisy was placed in their hearts until the Day they meet Allah the Exalted, on the Day of Resurrection.

We seek refuge with Allah from such an end.

Allah said,

بمَا أَخْلَفُواْ اللّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ
because they broke that (covenant) with Allah which they had promised to Him)

He placed hypocrisy in their hearts because they broke their promise and lied.

وَبِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْذِبُونَ



and because they used to tell lies.

In the Two Sahihs, it is recorded that the Messenger of Allah said,

ايَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلَثٌ

إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ

وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ

وَإِذَا ايْتُمِنَ خَان

There are three signs for a hypocrite;

if he speaks, he lies;

if he promises, he breaks the promise; and

if he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.

Allah said
