At-Tawbah [9]: 66 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

لَا تَعْتَذِرُوْا قَدْ كَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ اِيْمَانِكُمْ ۗ اِنْ نَّعْفُ عَنْ طَاۤىِٕفَةٍ مِّنْكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَاۤىِٕفَةً ۢ بِاَنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا مُجْرِمِيْنَ ࣖ (التوبة : ٩)

Transliteration:

Laa ta'taziroo qad kafartum ba'da eemaanikum; in na'fu 'an taaa'ifatim minkum nu'az zib taaa'ifatam bi annahum kaanoo mujrimeen (QS. at-Tawbah:66)

English / Sahih Translation:

Make no excuse; you have disbelieved [i.e., rejected faith] after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you – We will punish another faction because they were criminals. (QS. At-Tawbah, ayah 66)

Make no excuses. You became disbelievers (by mocking at Allah and His Messenger) after you had professed Faith. If We forgive some of you (who repent and believe), We shall punish others (who carry on their hypocrisy), because they were guilty.

English Literal

Do not apologize/find excuses, you had disbelieved after your belief, if We forgive/pardon on a group of people from you, We torture a group of people because they were criminals/sinners.

Tafsir jalalayn

Make no excuses, for that. You have disbelieved after believing, that is, your disbelief has become manifest even as you have manifested belief. If We forgive (read passive yu`fa, `it is forgiven', or active [first person plural] na`fu, `We forgive') a party of you, because of its sincerity and its repentance, as in the case of Jahsh b. Humayyir, We will chastise (read either [passive] tu`adhdhab, `[it] shall be chastised', or nu`adhdhib) another party because they were sinners', persisting in hypocrisy and mockery.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

لَا تَعْتَذِرُواْ قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ

Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed.

on account of your statement and mocking,

إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَأيِفَةٍ مِّنكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَأيِفَةً

If We pardon some of you, We will punish others among you,

for not all of you will be forgiven, some will have to taste the torment,

بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُواْ مُجْرِمِينَ



because they were criminals,

they were criminals because of this terrible, sinful statement
