Al-Qur'an Surah At-Tawbah Verse 56

At-Tawbah [9]: 56 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَيَحْلِفُوْنَ بِاللّٰهِ اِنَّهُمْ لَمِنْكُمْۗ وَمَا هُمْ مِّنْكُمْ وَلٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَّفْرَقُوْنَ (التوبة : ٩)

wayaḥlifūna
وَيَحْلِفُونَ
And they swear
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
by Allah
innahum
إِنَّهُمْ
indeed they
laminkum
لَمِنكُمْ
surely (are) of you
wamā
وَمَا
while not
hum
هُم
they
minkum
مِّنكُمْ
(are) of you
walākinnahum
وَلَٰكِنَّهُمْ
but they
qawmun
قَوْمٌ
(are) a people
yafraqūna
يَفْرَقُونَ
(who) are afraid

Transliteration:

Wa yahlifoona billaahi innnahum laminkum wa maa hum minkum wa laakinnahum qawmuny yafraqoon (QS. at-Tawbah:56)

English / Sahih Translation:

And they swear by Allah that they are from among you while they are not from among you; but they are a people who are afraid. (QS. At-Tawbah, ayah 56)

They swear by Allah that they are from among you, whereas they are not from among you, but they are a people in fear.

They swear by Allah that they are part of you, but they are not. They only say so out of fear.

And they (the hypocrites) swear by Allah that they are from among you (Muslims); and they are not from among you – however those people are afraid.

They swear by God that they are indeed of you (belonging with the believers), yet they are not of you. They are only a people ridden by fear (and thereby pretending to be of you).

English Literal

And they swear/take oath by God, that they truly are from you (E), and they are not from you, and however they are a nation afraid/separating.

Tafsir jalalayn

And they swear by God that they truly are of you, that is, [that they are] believers; but they are not of you; they are a folk who are afraid, that you should deal with them as you have done with the idolaters, and so they swear merely in pretence, in order to protect themselves.

Exposing Hypocrites' Fright and Fear

Allah describes to His Prophet the fright, fear, anxiety and nervousness of the hypocrites,

وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ

They swear by Allah that they are truly of you,

swearing a sure oath,

وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ

while they are not of you,

in reality,

وَلَـكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ



but they are a people who are afraid,

and this is what made them swear
