Surah Al-Anfal - Word by Word

(The Spoils of War)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

يَسْـَٔلُوْنَكَ عَنِ الْاَنْفَالِۗ قُلِ الْاَنْفَالُ لِلّٰهِ وَالرَّسُوْلِۚ فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَاَصْلِحُوْا ذَاتَ بَيْنِكُمْ ۖوَاَطِيْعُوا اللّٰهَ وَرَسُوْلَهٗٓ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُّؤْمِنِيْنَ ١

yasalūnaka
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ
They ask you
ʿani
عَنِ
about
l-anfāli
ٱلْأَنفَالِۖ
the spoils of war
quli
قُلِ
Say
l-anfālu
ٱلْأَنفَالُ
"The spoils of war
lillahi
لِلَّهِ
(are) for Allah
wal-rasūli
وَٱلرَّسُولِۖ
and the Messenger
fa-ittaqū
فَٱتَّقُوا۟
So fear
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
wa-aṣliḥū
وَأَصْلِحُوا۟
and set right
dhāta
ذَاتَ
that
baynikum
بَيْنِكُمْۖ
(which is) between you
wa-aṭīʿū
وَأَطِيعُوا۟
and obey
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
warasūlahu
وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ
and His Messenger
in
إِن
if
kuntum
كُنتُم
you are
mu'minīna
مُّؤْمِنِينَ
believers"
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger." So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers. (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 1)
Tafsir

اِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ الَّذِيْنَ اِذَا ذُكِرَ اللّٰهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوْبُهُمْ وَاِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ اٰيٰتُهٗ زَادَتْهُمْ اِيْمَانًا وَّعَلٰى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُوْنَۙ ٢

innamā
إِنَّمَا
Only
l-mu'minūna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
the believers
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
(are) those who
idhā
إِذَا
when
dhukira
ذُكِرَ
is mentioned
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
wajilat
وَجِلَتْ
feel fear
qulūbuhum
قُلُوبُهُمْ
their hearts
wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
and when
tuliyat
تُلِيَتْ
are recited
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
to them
āyātuhu
ءَايَٰتُهُۥ
His Verses
zādathum
زَادَتْهُمْ
they increase them
īmānan
إِيمَٰنًا
(in) faith
waʿalā
وَعَلَىٰ
and upon
rabbihim
رَبِّهِمْ
their Lord
yatawakkalūna
يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
they put their trust
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely – (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 2)
Tafsir
3

الَّذِيْنَ يُقِيْمُوْنَ الصَّلٰوةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنٰهُمْ يُنْفِقُوْنَۗ ٣

alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
Those who
yuqīmūna
يُقِيمُونَ
establish
l-ṣalata
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
the prayer
wamimmā
وَمِمَّا
and out of what
razaqnāhum
رَزَقْنَٰهُمْ
We have provided them
yunfiqūna
يُنفِقُونَ
they spend
The ones who establish prayer, and from what We have provided them, they spend. (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 3)
Tafsir

اُولٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ حَقًّاۗ لَهُمْ دَرَجٰتٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ وَّرِزْقٌ كَرِيْمٌۚ ٤

ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
Those -
humu
هُمُ
they are
l-mu'minūna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
the believers
ḥaqqan
حَقًّاۚ
(in) truth
lahum
لَّهُمْ
For them
darajātun
دَرَجَٰتٌ
(are) ranks
ʿinda
عِندَ
with
rabbihim
رَبِّهِمْ
their Lord
wamaghfiratun
وَمَغْفِرَةٌ
and forgiveness
wariz'qun
وَرِزْقٌ
and a provision
karīmun
كَرِيمٌ
noble
Those are the believers, truly. For them are degrees [of high position] with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision. (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 4)

كَمَآ اَخْرَجَكَ رَبُّكَ مِنْۢ بَيْتِكَ بِالْحَقِّۖ وَاِنَّ فَرِيْقًا مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ لَكٰرِهُوْنَ ٥

kamā
كَمَآ
As
akhrajaka
أَخْرَجَكَ
brought you out
rabbuka
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
min
مِنۢ
from
baytika
بَيْتِكَ
your home
bil-ḥaqi
بِٱلْحَقِّ
in truth
wa-inna
وَإِنَّ
while indeed
farīqan
فَرِيقًا
a party
mina
مِّنَ
among
l-mu'minīna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
the believers
lakārihūna
لَكَٰرِهُونَ
certainly disliked
[It is] just as when your Lord brought you out of your home [for the battle of Badr] in truth, while indeed, a party among the believers were unwilling, (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 5)
Tafsir
6

يُجَادِلُوْنَكَ فِى الْحَقِّ بَعْدَمَا تَبَيَّنَ كَاَنَّمَا يُسَاقُوْنَ اِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُوْنَ ۗ ٦

yujādilūnaka
يُجَٰدِلُونَكَ
They dispute with you
فِى
concerning
l-ḥaqi
ٱلْحَقِّ
the truth
baʿdamā
بَعْدَمَا
after what
tabayyana
تَبَيَّنَ
was made clear
ka-annamā
كَأَنَّمَا
as if
yusāqūna
يُسَاقُونَ
they were driven
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-mawti
ٱلْمَوْتِ
[the] death
wahum
وَهُمْ
while they
yanẓurūna
يَنظُرُونَ
(were) looking
Arguing with you concerning the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death while they were looking on. (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 6)
Tafsir
7

وَاِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ اللّٰهُ اِحْدَى الطَّاۤىِٕفَتَيْنِ اَنَّهَا لَكُمْ وَتَوَدُّوْنَ اَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ الشَّوْكَةِ تَكُوْنُ لَكُمْ وَيُرِيْدُ اللّٰهُ اَنْ يُّحِقَّ الْحَقَّ بِكَلِمٰتِهٖ وَيَقْطَعَ دَابِرَ الْكٰفِرِيْنَۙ ٧

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
yaʿidukumu
يَعِدُكُمُ
promised you
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
iḥ'dā
إِحْدَى
one
l-ṭāifatayni
ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيْنِ
(of) the two groups
annahā
أَنَّهَا
that it (would be)
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
watawaddūna
وَتَوَدُّونَ
and you wished
anna
أَنَّ
that
ghayra
غَيْرَ
(one) other than
dhāti
ذَاتِ
that
l-shawkati
ٱلشَّوْكَةِ
(of) the armed
takūnu
تَكُونُ
would be
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
wayurīdu
وَيُرِيدُ
But intended
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
an
أَن
to
yuḥiqqa
يُحِقَّ
justify
l-ḥaqa
ٱلْحَقَّ
the truth
bikalimātihi
بِكَلِمَٰتِهِۦ
by His words
wayaqṭaʿa
وَيَقْطَعَ
and cut off
dābira
دَابِرَ
(the) roots
l-kāfirīna
ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ
(of) the disbelievers
[Remember, O believers], when Allah promised you one of the two groups – that it would be yours – and you wished that the unarmed one would be yours. But Allah intended to establish the truth by His words and to eliminate the disbelievers (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 7)
Tafsir
8

لِيُحِقَّ الْحَقَّ وَيُبْطِلَ الْبَاطِلَ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُجْرِمُوْنَۚ ٨

liyuḥiqqa
لِيُحِقَّ
That He might justify
l-ḥaqa
ٱلْحَقَّ
the truth
wayub'ṭila
وَيُبْطِلَ
and prove false
l-bāṭila
ٱلْبَٰطِلَ
the falsehood
walaw
وَلَوْ
even if
kariha
كَرِهَ
disliked (it)
l-muj'rimūna
ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ
the criminals
That He should establish the truth and abolish falsehood, even if the criminals disliked it. (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 8)
Tafsir
9

اِذْ تَسْتَغِيْثُوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ اَنِّيْ مُمِدُّكُمْ بِاَلْفٍ مِّنَ الْمَلٰۤىِٕكَةِ مُرْدِفِيْنَ ٩

idh
إِذْ
When
tastaghīthūna
تَسْتَغِيثُونَ
you were seeking help
rabbakum
رَبَّكُمْ
(of) your Lord
fa-is'tajāba
فَٱسْتَجَابَ
and He answered
lakum
لَكُمْ
[to] you
annī
أَنِّى
"Indeed I am
mumiddukum
مُمِدُّكُم
going to reinforce you
bi-alfin
بِأَلْفٍ
with a thousand
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-malāikati
ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ
the Angels
mur'difīna
مُرْدِفِينَ
one after another"
[Remember] when you were asking help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another." (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 9)
Tafsir
10

وَمَا جَعَلَهُ اللّٰهُ اِلَّا بُشْرٰى وَلِتَطْمَىِٕنَّ بِهٖ قُلُوْبُكُمْۗ وَمَا النَّصْرُ اِلَّا مِنْ عِنْدِ اللّٰهِ ۗاِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَزِيْزٌ حَكِيْمٌ ࣖ ١٠

wamā
وَمَا
And not
jaʿalahu
جَعَلَهُ
(it was) made
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
illā
إِلَّا
but
bush'rā
بُشْرَىٰ
good tidings
walitaṭma-inna
وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّ
and so that might be at rest
bihi
بِهِۦ
with it
qulūbukum
قُلُوبُكُمْۚ
your hearts
wamā
وَمَا
And (there is) no
l-naṣru
ٱلنَّصْرُ
[the] victory
illā
إِلَّا
except
min
مِنْ
from
ʿindi
عِندِ
[of]
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِۚ
Allah
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
ʿazīzun
عَزِيزٌ
(is) All-Mighty
ḥakīmun
حَكِيمٌ
All-Wise
And Allah made it not but good tidings and so that your hearts would be assured thereby. And victory is not but from Allah. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. (QS. [8] Al-Anfal: 10)
Tafsir
