Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Muddaththir Verse 52

Al-Muddaththir [74]: 52 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

بَلْ يُرِيْدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ اَنْ يُّؤْتٰى صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةًۙ (المدثر : ٧٤)

Transliteration:

Bal yureedu kullum ri'im minhum any yu'taa suhufam munashsharah (QS. al-Muddathir:52)

English / Sahih Translation:

Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about. (QS. Al-Muddaththir, ayah 52)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Rather, every one of them wishes that he should be given unrolled (divine) scriptures.

In fact, each one of them wishes to be given a ˹personal˺ letter ˹from Allah˺ for all ˹to read˺.[[ Another possible translation: “In fact, each of them wishes to be given a scripture open ˹for all to read˺.” See {6:124}. ]]

Tafsir jalalayn

Nay, but everyone of them desires to be given unrolled scrolls, from God, exalted be He, [enjoining them] to follow the Prophet (s), as they said [before], `And [even then] we will not believe your ascension until you bring down for us a book that we may read' [Q. 17;93].

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Nay, everyone of them desires that he should be given pages spread out.

meaning, each one of these idolators wants to have a book revealed to him as Allah revealed to the Prophet .

Mujahid and others have said this.

This is similar to Allah's statement,

وَإِذَا جَأءَتْهُمْ ءَايَةٌ قَالُواْ لَن نُّوْمِنَ حَتَّى نُوْتَى مِثْلَ مَأ أُوتِىَ رُسُلُ اللَّهِ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ حَيْثُ يَجْعَلُ رِسَالَتَهُ

And when there comes to them a sign they say;

"We shall not believe until we receive the like of that which the Messengers of Allah had received."

Allah knows best with whom to place His Message. (6;124)

It is reported in a narration from Qatadah that he said,

"They want to be declared innocent (on the Day of Judgement) without having to do any deeds."

Then Allah says,

كَلَّ بَل لَا يَخَافُونَ الاْخِرَةَ
