Surah Al-Jinn - Word by Word

(The Jinn)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

قُلْ اُوْحِيَ اِلَيَّ اَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَقَالُوْٓا اِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْاٰنًا عَجَبًاۙ ١

qul
قُلْ
Say
ūḥiya
أُوحِىَ
"It has been revealed
ilayya
إِلَىَّ
to me
annahu
أَنَّهُ
that
is'tamaʿa
ٱسْتَمَعَ
listened
nafarun
نَفَرٌ
a group
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-jini
ٱلْجِنِّ
the jinn
faqālū
فَقَالُوٓا۟
and they said
innā
إِنَّا
"Indeed we
samiʿ'nā
سَمِعْنَا
heard
qur'ānan
قُرْءَانًا
a Quran
ʿajaban
عَجَبًا
amazing
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Quran [i.e., recitation]. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 1)
Tafsir

يَّهْدِيْٓ اِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَاٰمَنَّا بِهٖۗ وَلَنْ نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ اَحَدًاۖ ٢

yahdī
يَهْدِىٓ
It guides
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-rush'di
ٱلرُّشْدِ
the right way
faāmannā
فَـَٔامَنَّا
so we believe
bihi
بِهِۦۖ
in it
walan
وَلَن
and never
nush'rika
نُّشْرِكَ
we will associate
birabbinā
بِرَبِّنَآ
with our Lord
aḥadan
أَحَدًا
anyone
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 2)
Tafsir
3

وَّاَنَّهٗ تَعٰلٰى جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا اتَّخَذَ صَاحِبَةً وَّلَا وَلَدًاۖ ٣

wa-annahu
وَأَنَّهُۥ
And that He -
taʿālā
تَعَٰلَىٰ
Exalted is
jaddu
جَدُّ
(the) Majesty
rabbinā
رَبِّنَا
(of) our Lord -
مَا
not
ittakhadha
ٱتَّخَذَ
He has taken
ṣāḥibatan
صَٰحِبَةً
a wife
walā
وَلَا
and not
waladan
وَلَدًا
a son
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 3)
Tafsir
4

وَّاَنَّهٗ كَانَ يَقُوْلُ سَفِيْهُنَا عَلَى اللّٰهِ شَطَطًاۖ ٤

wa-annahu
وَأَنَّهُۥ
And that he
kāna
كَانَ
used
yaqūlu
يَقُولُ
(to) speak -
safīhunā
سَفِيهُنَا
the foolish among us
ʿalā
عَلَى
against
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
shaṭaṭan
شَطَطًا
an excessive transgression
And that our foolish one [i.e., Iblees] has been saying about Allah an excessive transgression. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 4)
Tafsir

وَّاَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ اَنْ لَّنْ تَقُوْلَ الْاِنْسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَى اللّٰهِ كَذِبًاۙ ٥

wa-annā
وَأَنَّا
And that we
ẓanannā
ظَنَنَّآ
thought
an
أَن
that
lan
لَّن
never
taqūla
تَقُولَ
will say
l-insu
ٱلْإِنسُ
the men
wal-jinu
وَٱلْجِنُّ
and the jinn
ʿalā
عَلَى
against
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
kadhiban
كَذِبًا
any lie
And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allah a lie. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 5)
Tafsir
6

وَّاَنَّهٗ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ الْاِنْسِ يَعُوْذُوْنَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوْهُمْ رَهَقًاۖ ٦

wa-annahu
وَأَنَّهُۥ
And that
kāna
كَانَ
(there) were
rijālun
رِجَالٌ
men
mina
مِّنَ
among
l-insi
ٱلْإِنسِ
mankind
yaʿūdhūna
يَعُوذُونَ
who sought refuge
birijālin
بِرِجَالٍ
in (the) men
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-jini
ٱلْجِنِّ
the jinn
fazādūhum
فَزَادُوهُمْ
so they increased them
rahaqan
رَهَقًا
(in) burden
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin]. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 6)
Tafsir
7

وَّاَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوْا كَمَا ظَنَنْتُمْ اَنْ لَّنْ يَّبْعَثَ اللّٰهُ اَحَدًاۖ ٧

wa-annahum
وَأَنَّهُمْ
And that they
ẓannū
ظَنُّوا۟
thought
kamā
كَمَا
as
ẓanantum
ظَنَنتُمْ
you thought
an
أَن
that
lan
لَّن
never
yabʿatha
يَبْعَثَ
will raise
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
aḥadan
أَحَدًا
anyone
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone [as a messenger]. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 7)
Tafsir
8

وَّاَنَّا لَمَسْنَا السَّمَاۤءَ فَوَجَدْنٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيْدًا وَّشُهُبًاۖ ٨

wa-annā
وَأَنَّا
And that we
lamasnā
لَمَسْنَا
sought to touch
l-samāa
ٱلسَّمَآءَ
the heaven
fawajadnāhā
فَوَجَدْنَٰهَا
but we found it
muli-at
مُلِئَتْ
filled (with)
ḥarasan
حَرَسًا
guards
shadīdan
شَدِيدًا
severe
washuhuban
وَشُهُبًا
and flaming fires
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 8)

9

وَّاَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَاعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِۗ فَمَنْ يَّسْتَمِعِ الْاٰنَ يَجِدْ لَهٗ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًاۖ ٩

wa-annā
وَأَنَّا
And that we
kunnā
كُنَّا
used (to)
naqʿudu
نَقْعُدُ
sit
min'hā
مِنْهَا
there in
maqāʿida
مَقَٰعِدَ
positions
lilssamʿi
لِلسَّمْعِۖ
for hearing
faman
فَمَن
but (he) who
yastamiʿi
يَسْتَمِعِ
listens
l-āna
ٱلْءَانَ
now
yajid
يَجِدْ
will find
lahu
لَهُۥ
for him
shihāban
شِهَابًا
a flaming fire
raṣadan
رَّصَدًا
waiting
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 9)

وَّاَنَّا لَا نَدْرِيْٓ اَشَرٌّ اُرِيْدَ بِمَنْ فِى الْاَرْضِ اَمْ اَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًاۙ ١٠

wa-annā
وَأَنَّا
And that we -
لَا
not
nadrī
نَدْرِىٓ
we know
asharrun
أَشَرٌّ
whether evil
urīda
أُرِيدَ
is intended
biman
بِمَن
for (those) who
فِى
(are) in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
am
أَمْ
or
arāda
أَرَادَ
intends
bihim
بِهِمْ
for them
rabbuhum
رَبُّهُمْ
their Lord
rashadan
رَشَدًا
a right path
And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course. (QS. [72] Al-Jinn: 10)
Tafsir
