Tafsir jalalayn

when verily He created you in stages? (atwr is the plural of tr, which means a state). Thus the sperm-drop is one state, the blood clot is another state, and so on, until the creation of the human being is complete; reflecting on [the manner of] his creation necessarily leads to belief in his Creator.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

While He has created you (in) Atwar (stages).

It has been said that this means from a drop of sperm, then from a hanging clot, then from a lump of flesh.

Ibn `Abbas, `Ikrimah, Qatadah, Yahya bin Rafi`, As-Suddi and Ibn Zayd, all said this.

Concerning Allah's statement,

أَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ طِبَاقًا
