Al-Qur'an Surah Al-A'raf Verse 48
Al-A'raf [7]: 48 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
وَنَادٰٓى اَصْحٰبُ الْاَعْرَافِ رِجَالًا يَّعْرِفُوْنَهُمْ بِسِيْمٰىهُمْ قَالُوْا مَآ اَغْنٰى عَنْكُمْ جَمْعُكُمْ وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُوْنَ (الأعراف : ٧)
- wanādā
- وَنَادَىٰٓ
- And (will) call out
- aṣḥābu
- أَصْحَٰبُ
- (the) companions
- l-aʿrāfi
- ٱلْأَعْرَافِ
- (of) the heights
- rijālan
- رِجَالًا
- (to) men
- yaʿrifūnahum
- يَعْرِفُونَهُم
- whom they recognize
- bisīmāhum
- بِسِيمَىٰهُمْ
- by their marks
- qālū
- قَالُوا۟
- saying
- mā
- مَآ
- "Not
- aghnā
- أَغْنَىٰ
- (has) availed
- ʿankum
- عَنكُمْ
- [to] you
- jamʿukum
- جَمْعُكُمْ
- your gathering
- wamā
- وَمَا
- and what
- kuntum
- كُنتُمْ
- you were
- tastakbirūna
- تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
- arrogant (about)"
Transliteration:
Wa naadaaa Ashaabul A'raffi rijaalany ya'rifoonahum biseemaahum qaaloo maaa aghnaa 'ankum jam'ukum wa maa kuntum tastakbiroon(QS. al-ʾAʿrāf:48)
English / Sahih Translation:
And the companions of the Elevations will call to men [within Hell] whom they recognize by their mark, saying, "Of no avail to you was your gathering and [the fact] that you were arrogant." (QS. Al-A'raf, ayah 48)

The people of A‘rāf will call out to the people (of Fire) whom they will recognize through their signs: “Your masses were not of any help to you, nor was the arrogance you used to show.

The people of the Heights call out to some men (who were the leaders of unbelief in the world, and) whom they recognize by their marks (on their countenances), saying: "(Now you see that) neither your numbers and the wealth you amassed nor your growing arrogance and vanity have availed you!"

The occupants of the elevated places will call out to certain men (from the fellows of the Fire), whom they will recognise by their appearance, `Behold! neither your multitude nor that (amassing) in which you took pride have been of any avail to you.
English Literal
And company/friends (of) the fence between Heaven and Hell/the highest tip of anything called/cried (to) men (that) they know them by their marks/identifications/expressions. They said: "Your gatherings/collecting/group and what you were being arrogant did not enrich/satisfy from you."

And the dwellers of the Elevations will call to men they recognize by their features, saying, “Your hoardings did not avail you, nor did your arrogance.”
Tafsir jalalayn
And those of the Heights call to men, from among the inhabitants of the Fire, whom they know by their mark, [saying]; `Your masses, of property, or your multitude, and your haughtiness, that is, your disdaining of belief, have not availed you, [as protection against] the Fire. And they also say to them, pointing to those [formerly] oppressed Muslims;
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
Allah tells;
وَنَادَى أَصْحَابُ الَاعْرَافِ رِجَالاً يَعْرِفُونَهُمْ بِسِيمَاهُمْ قَالُواْ
And the men on Al-A`raf will call unto the men whom they would recognize by their marks, saying;
Allah states that the people of Al-A`raf will admonish some of the chiefs of the idolators whom they recognize by their marks in the Fire,
مَا أَغْنَى عَنكُمْ جَمْعُكُمْ
"Of what benefit to you was your gathering..."
meaning, your great numbers,
وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
"...and your arrogance!"
This Ayah means, your great numbers and wealth did not save you from Allah's torment. Rather, you are dwelling in His torment and punishment
