Al-Qur'an Surah Al-A'raf Verse 39

Al-A'raf [7]: 39 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَقَالَتْ اُوْلٰىهُمْ لِاُخْرٰىهُمْ فَمَا كَانَ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ فَضْلٍ فَذُوْقُوا الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْسِبُوْنَ ࣖ (الأعراف : ٧)

waqālat
وَقَالَتْ
And (will) say

أُولَىٰهُمْ
(the) first of them
li-ukh'rāhum
لِأُخْرَىٰهُمْ
to (the) last of them

the punishment

بِمَا

you used to

تَكْسِبُونَ
earn"

Transliteration:

Wa qaalat oolaahum li ukhraahum famaa kaana lakum 'alainaa min fadlin fazooqul azaaba bimaa kuntum taksiboon (QS. al-ʾAʿrāf:39)

English / Sahih Translation:

And the first of them will say to the last of them, "Then you had not any favor over us, so taste the punishment for what you used to earn." (QS. Al-A'raf, ayah 39)

The former ones will say to the latter ones, “So, you have no privilege against us. Now, taste the punishment for what you have been earning.”

Then the leaders will say to their followers, “You were no better than us! So taste the torment for what you used to commit.”

Then the preceding ones will say to the succeeding ones: 'You were in no way superior to us; taste, then, this torment for your deeds.'

Then the former will say to the latter: "You have no privilege over us. So taste the punishment for what you had done."

And the preceding groups will say to the latter, “So you too were no better than us, therefore taste the punishment for what you have done!”

And the first of them will say to the last of them, ‘You have no merit over us! So taste the punishment because of what you used to earn.’

Then the preceding ones among them say to the succeeding ones: "You are in no wise superior to us, so taste the punishment for all (the sins) that you were busy earning (through your belief and deeds)!"

And the first of them, (- their leaders) will say to the last of them (- the followers), `(If we are to blame), you (too) are no better than we. Suffer therefore, the punishment of your (evil) deeds.´

English Literal

And their first said to their last: "So (there) was/is not was for you on us from grace/favour/blessing, so taste/experience the torture because (of) what you were gaining/acquiring ."

And the preceding groups will say to the latter, "So you too were no better than us, therefore taste the punishment for what you have done!"

Then the first will say to the last, "You have no preference (advantage) over us (or were no better than us), so taste you the penalty for that which you have earned!"

The first of them will say to the last of them: "You were not better than us, so taste the torment for what you used to earn."

He will say: Enter into the Fire among the nations that have passed away before you from among the jinn and men. Every time a nation enters it curses its sister; until when they all follow one another into it, the last of them will say with regard to the first of them: Our Lord, these led us astray, so give them a double chastisement of the Fire. He will say: Each one has double but you know not.

The first of them will say to the last of them, “You have no advantage over us, so taste the torment for what you used to earn.”

Tafsir jalalayn

And the first of them shall say to the last of them, `You have no advantage over us, since you did not disbelieve because of us; you and we are equal [in this predicament]. God, exalted be He, says to them; So taste the chastisement for what you used to earn'.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَقَالَتْ أُولَاهُمْ لاُخْرَاهُمْ

The first of them will say to the last of them,

meaning, the followed will say to the followers,

فَمَا كَانَ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا مِن فَضْلٍ

"You were not better than us. .."

meaning, you were led astray as we were led astray, according to As-Suddi.

فَذُوقُواْ الْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْسِبُونَ



"So taste the torment for what you used to earn."

Allah again described the condition of the idolators during the gathering (of Resurrection), when He said;

قَالَ الَّذِينَ اسْتَكْبَرُواْ لِلَّذِينَ اسْتُضْعِفُواْ أَنَحْنُ صَدَدنَـكُمْ عَنِ الْهُدَى بَعْدَ إِذْ جَأءَكُمْ بَلْ كُنتُمْ مُّجْرِمِينَ

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ اسْتُضْعِفُواْ لِلَّذِينَ اسْتَكْبَرُواْ بَلْ مَكْرُ الَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ إِذْ تَأْمُرُونَنَأ أَن نَّكْفُرَ بِاللَّهِ وَنَجْعَلَ لَهُ أَندَاداً وَأَسَرُّواْ النَّدَامَةَ لَمَّا رَأَوُاْ اْلَعَذَابَ وَجَعَلْنَا الاٌّغْلَـلَ فِى أَعْنَاقِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ هَلْ يُجْزَوْنَ إِلاَّ مَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ

And those who were arrogant will say to those who were deemed weak;"Did we keep you back from guidance after it come to you! Nay, but you were criminals."

Those who were deemed weak will say to those who were arrogant;"Nay, but it was your plotting by night and day, when you ordered us to disbelieve in Allah and set up rivals to Him!"

And each of them (parties) will conceal their own regrets, when they behold the torment. And We shall put iron collars round the necks of those who disbelieved. Are they requited aught except what they used to do! (34;32-33
