English / Sahih Translation:

And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie or denies His verses? Those will attain their portion of the decree until, when Our messengers [i.e., angels] come to them to take them in death, they will say, "Where are those you used to invoke besides Allah?" They will say, "They have departed from us," and will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers. (QS. Al-A'raf, ayah 37)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

So, who is more unjust than the one who coins a lie against Allah or rejects His signs? They shall receive their share from that (sustenance) which is written (for them in their destiny) until, when Our envoys (angels) shall come to them to take their souls away, they (the angels) will say, “Where are those (so-called gods) whom you used to invoke besides Allah?” They (the unbelievers) will say, “They all have vanished from us”, and they shall testify against themselves that they were unbelievers.

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Who does more wrong than those who fabricate lies against Allah or deny His revelations? They will receive what is destined for them,[[ i.e., they will receive all provisions and bounties destined for them by their Lord.]] until Our messenger-angels arrive to take their souls, asking them, “Where are those ˹false gods˺ you used to invoke besides Allah?” They will cry, “They have failed us,” and they will confess against themselves that they were indeed disbelievers.

Who does greater wrong than the one who fabricates lies against Allah or rejects His verses? They will receive the share that is destined for them, until when Our angel-messengers come to take their souls, saying, “Where are those whom you used to invoke besides Allah?” They will say, “They are lost from us,” and they will testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.

A. J. Arberry

And who does greater evil than he who forges against God a lie, or cries lies to His signs? Those - their portion of the Book shall reach them; till, when Our messengers come to them, to take them away, they say, 'Where is that you were calling on, beside God?' They will say, 'They have gone astray from us, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were unbelievers.

Abdul Haleem

Who is more wrong than the person who invents lies against God or rejects His revelations? Such people will have their preordained share [in this world], but then, when Our angels arrive to take them back, saying, ‘Where are those you used to call on beside God?’ they will say, ‘They have deserted us.’ They will confess that they were disbelievers and

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

Who doth greater wrong than he who fabricateth a lie against Allah or belieth His sign? These: their full portion from the Book shall reach them until when Our messengers come unto them causing them to die, and say: where is that which ye were wont to call upon beside Allah? They will say: they have strayed from us. And they shall testify against themselves that they have been infidels.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His Signs? For such, their portion appointed must reach them from the Book (of decrees); until, when our messengers (of death) arrive and take their souls, they say; "Where are the things that ye used to invoke besides Allah?" They will reply, "They have left us in the lurch," And they will bear witness against themselves, that they had rejected Allah.

Abul Ala Maududi

Who is more unjust then he who invents a falsehood, ascribing it to Allah, or who rejects His revelation as false? Their full portion of God's Decree shall reach them, until Our deputed angels come to them to take charge of their souls, and say: 'Where are the deities now, those whom you invoked besides Allah?' They will say: 'They are all gone away from us.' And they shall bear witness against themselves that they were unbelievers.

Ahmed Ali

Who could be more wicked than he who imputes lies to God or denies His revelations? Such as these will receive what is declared in the Book, and when Our angels come to draw out their souls and ask: "Where are they you worshipped other than God?" They will answer: "They have left us and fled;" and bear witness against themselves for being infidels.

Ahmed Raza Khan

So who is more unjust than one who fabricated a lie against Allah or denied His signs? Their written fate will reach them; until when Our sent angels come to remove their souls, hence they say to them, “Where are they whom you used to worship besides Allah?” They say, “We have lost them” and they testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.

Ali Quli Qarai

So who is a greater wrongdoer than him who fabricates a lie against Allah, or denies His signs? Their share, as decreed in the Book, shall reach them. When Our messengers come to take them away, they will say, ‘Where is that which you used to invoke besides Allah?’ They will say, ‘They have forsaken us,’ and they will testify against themselves that they were faithless.

Ali Ünal

Who is more in wrong than he who fabricates falsehood in attribution to God and denies His Revelations and signs (in the universe and their selves)? Their full portion of God’s decree (concerning life and providence) will reach them, until Our envoys (angels assigned for this duty) come to them to take their souls, and say: "Where, now, are those beings whom you have deified and invoked apart from God?" They say: "They have failed us," and thus bear witness against themselves that they were (always) unbelievers.

Amatul Rahman Omar

Who is more unjust than he who forges a lie in the name of Allâh or cries lies to His Messages. It is these who shall continue to have their lot of the Book as ordained (by Allâh) until (there comes the time) when Our messengers (- the angels) come to them to take away their souls. They (- the angels) will say, `Where is (now) that which you used to call upon besides Allâh?´ They will reply, `They are lost to us;´ and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.

English Literal

They would say: They are gone away from us; and they shall bear witness against themselves that they were unbelievers

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Tafsir jalalayn

And who -- that is, none -- does greater evil than he who invents a lie against God, by ascribing to Him a partner or a child, or denies His signs?, the Qur'n. Those -- their portion, their lot, of the Scripture, of what has been inscribed as theirs in the Preserved Tablet (al-lawh al-mahfz), in the way of provision, term [of life] and other matters, shall reach them until, when Our messengers, the angels, come to them, to take their souls, they say, to them, in reprimand; `Where is that which you were calling upon, worshipping, beside God?' They will say, `They have gone astray from us', they are not present [before us], and so we cannot see them; and they will bear witness against themselves, upon death, that they were disbelievers.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Idolators enjoy Their destined Share in This Life, but will lose Their Supporters upon Death

Allah said,

Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His Ayat,

meaning, none is more unjust than whoever invents a lie about Allah or rejects the Ayat that He has revealed.

For such their appointed portion will reach them from the Book,

Muhammad bin Ka`b Al-Qurazi said that,

it refers to each person's deeds, allotted provisions and age.

Similar was said by Ar-Rabi bin Anas and Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam.

Allah said in similar statements,

Verily, those who invent a lie against Allah, will never be successful. (A brief) enjoyment in this world! And then unto Us will be their return, then We shall make them taste the severest torment because they used to disbelieve. (10;69-70)

and,

And whoever disbelieves, let not his disbelief grieve you. To Us is their return, and We shall inform them what they have done. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of what is in the breasts (of men). We let them enjoy for a little while. (31;23-24)

Allah said next,

until when Our messengers come to them to take their souls.

Allah states that when death comes to the idolators and the angels come to capture their souls to take them to Hellfire, the angels horrify them, saying,

they (the angels) will say;"Where are those whom you used to invoke and worship besides Allah,"

"Where are the so-called partners (of Allah) whom you used to call in the life of this world, invoking and worshipping them instead of Allah Call them so that they save you from what you are suffering."

However, the idolators will reply,

they will reply, "They have vanished and deserted us."

meaning, we have lost them and thus, we do not hope in their benefit or aid,

And they will bear witness against themselves,

they will admit and proclaim against themselves,

that they were disbelievers
