Al-Qur'an Surah Al-A'raf Verse 166

Al-A'raf [7]: 166 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَلَمَّا عَتَوْا عَنْ مَّا نُهُوْا عَنْهُ قُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُوْنُوْا قِرَدَةً خَاسِـِٕيْنَ (الأعراف : ٧)

Transliteration:

Falammaa 'ataw 'ammmaa nuhoo 'anhu qulna lahum kkoonoo qiradatan khaasi'een (QS. al-ʾAʿrāf:166)

English / Sahih Translation:

So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised." (QS. Al-A'raf, ayah 166)

When they persisted in doing what they were forbidden from, We said to them, “Become apes debased.”

So when they insolently refused to keep away from that which they were forbidden, We condemned them to be (as) apes despised.

English Literal

So when they became arrogant/disobedient from what they were forbidden/prevented from it, We said to them: "Be/become despised/diminished apes/monkeys."

Consequently when they rebelled against the command to refrain, We said to them, "Be apes, despised!"

But when they rebelled against what they were forbidden, We said to them, "Become you as apes, despised and spurned!"

So when they exceeded the limits of what they were prohibited, We said to them: "Be you monkeys, despised and rejected." (It is a severe warning to the mankind that they should not disobey what Allah commands them to do, and be far away from what He prohibits them).

So when they neglected that whereof they had been reminded, We delivered those who forbade evil and We overtook those who were iniquitous with an evil chastisement because they transgressed.

And when they disdained, to desist from, that which was prohibited to them, We said to them, `Be apes, despised!', abased, and they became so; this is an explication of what preceded [with regard to the details of their `grievous chastisement']. Ibn `Abbs said, `I do not know what befell the group that abstained'. `Ikrima said, `That group was not destroyed because they had been averse to what the others did and had said, `Why do you preach (admonition) ...' Al-Hkim reported [in a hadth] that he [`Ikrima] referred this opinion to Ibn `Abbs, who was delighted by it.

So when they exceeded the limits of what they were prohibited, We said to them;"Be you monkeys, despised."
