Al-Qur'an Surah Al-A'raf Verse 149

Al-A'raf [7]: 149 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَلَمَّا سُقِطَ فِيْٓ اَيْدِيْهِمْ وَرَاَوْا اَنَّهُمْ قَدْ ضَلُّوْاۙ قَالُوْا لَىِٕنْ لَّمْ يَرْحَمْنَا رَبُّنَا وَيَغْفِرْ لَنَا لَنَكُوْنَنَّ مِنَ الْخٰسِرِيْنَ (الأعراف : ٧)

walammā
وَلَمَّا
And when
suqiṭa
سُقِطَ
(it was made to) fall
فِىٓ

aydīhim
أَيْدِيهِمْ
their hands
wara-aw
وَرَأَوْا۟
and they saw
annahum
أَنَّهُمْ
that they

(had) indeed

ضَلُّوا۟
gone astray

they said

لَئِن

yarḥamnā
يَرْحَمْنَا
has Mercy on us
rabbunā
رَبُّنَا
Our Lord
wayaghfir
وَيَغْفِرْ
and forgive
lanā
لَنَا
[for] us
lanakūnanna
لَنَكُونَنَّ
we will surely be
mina
مِنَ
among
l-khāsirīna
ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ
the losers"

Transliteration:

Wa lammaa suqita feee aideehim wa ra aw annahum qad dalloo qaaloo la'il lam yarhamnaa Rabbunaa wa yaghfir lanaa lanakoonanna minal khaasireen (QS. al-ʾAʿrāf:149)

English / Sahih Translation:

And when regret overcame them and they saw that they had gone astray, they said, "If our Lord does not have mercy upon us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers." (QS. Al-A'raf, ayah 149)

When they became remorseful and saw that they had gone astray, they said, “If Allah shows no mercy to us, and does not forgive us, we shall certainly be among the losers.”

And when (the magic spell was broken) they were smitten with remorse and realised that they had indeed gone astray, they said, `Unless our Lord have mercy on us and protect us (against the consequences of our sins) we shall surely be of the losers.´

English Literal

And when it was wronged/confused/regretted in their hands, and they saw/understood that they had been misguided, they said: "If (E) our Lord does not have mercy upon us, and forgive for us we will be/become (E) from the losers ."106

Then, when they regretted, and realized that they had erred, they said, “Unless our Lord extends His mercy to us, and forgives us, we will be among the losers.”

Tafsir jalalayn

And when they became at a loss, that is, [when] they became remorseful for having worshipped it, and saw, [and] realised, that they had gone astray, thereby, and this was after Moses's return [from the communion], they said, `Unless our Lord is merciful to us and forgives us (read both [verbs] either in the third person singular or in the second person singular), verily we shall be among the losers'.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَلَمَّا سُقِطَ فَي أَيْدِيهِمْ

And when they regretted,

and felt sorrow for their action,

وَرَأَوْاْ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ ضَلُّواْ قَالُواْ

لَيِن لَّمْ يَرْحَمْنَا رَبُّنَا وَيَغْفِرْ لَنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ



and saw that they had gone astray, they said;"If our Lord have not mercy upon us and forgive us, we will certainly become among the losers."

or among the destroyed ones. This was their recognition of their sin and their way of seeking salvation from Allah the Most Mighty and Majestic
