Al-Qur'an Surah Al-A'raf Verse 136

Then We subjected them to retribution, and drowned them in the sea, because they rejected Our signs, and were neglectful of them.

So We revenged/punished from them, so We drowned/sunk them in the body of water (river/sea/lake) because they denied/falsified with Our verses/evidences , and they were from it ignoring/disregarding .

Tafsir jalalayn

So We exacted retribution from them and therefore We drowned them in the sea (al-yamm denotes salty waters) for, the reason, that they denied Our signs and were heedless of them, not reflecting upon them.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The People of Fir`awn drown in the Sea; the Children of Israel inherit the Holy Land

Allah tells;

فَانتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ

فَأَغْرَقْنَاهُمْ فِي الْيَمِّ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَذَّبُواْ بِأيَاتِنَا وَكَانُواْ عَنْهَا غَافِلِينَ
