English / Sahih Translation:
But when good [i.e., provision] came to them, they said, "This is ours [by right]." And if a bad [condition] struck them, they saw an evil omen in Moses and those with him. Unquestionably, their fortune is with Allah, but most of them do not know. (QS. Al-A'raf, ayah 131)
Mufti Taqi Usmani
When good times came to them, they said, “This is our right.” And if an evil touched them, they took it as an ill omen of Mūsā and those with him. Listen, their ill omen lies with Allah only, but most of them do not know.
Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
In times of prosperity, they said, “This is what we deserve,” but in adversity, they blamed it on Moses and those with him.[[ In psychology, this is called self-serving bias and scapegoating.]] Surely all is destined by Allah. Yet most of them did not know.
Ruwwad Translation Center
When prosperity came their way, they said, “This is what we deserve,” but when adversity befell them, they ascribed it to the misfortune of Moses and those who were with him. Indeed, their misfortune is decreed by Allah, but most of them do not know.
A. J. Arberry
So, when good came to them, they said, 'This belongs to us'; but if any evil smote them, they would augur ill by Moses and those with him. Why, surely their ill augury was with God; but the most of them knew not.
Abdul Haleem
then, when something good came their way, they said, ‘This is our due!’. When something bad came, they ascribed it to the evil omen of Moses and those with him, but their ‘evil omen’ was really from God, though most of them did not realize it.
Abdul Majid Daryabadi
So whenever good-hap came unto them, they would say: ours is this. And if a mishap afflicted them, they would lay it to the evil augury of Musa and these with him. Behold! their evil augury was only with Allah, but most of them knew not.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali
But when good (times) came, they said, "This is due to us;" When gripped by calamity, they ascribed it to evil omens connected with Moses and those with him! Behold! in truth the omens of evil are theirs in Allah's sight, but most of them do not understand!
Abul Ala Maududi
But whenever prosperity came their way, they said: 'This is our due.' And whatever hardship befell them, they attributed it to the misfortune of Moses and those who followed him. Surely, their misfortune had been decreed by Allah - but most of them do not know that.
Ahmed Ali
Yet when good came their way they said: "It is our due;" but when misfortune befell them they put the omen down to Moses and those who were with him. But surely the omen was with God, yet most of them did not understand.
Ahmed Raza Khan
So when good would reach them they would say, “This is for us”; and when misfortune reached them, they would infer it as ill omens of Moosa and his companions; pay heed! The misfortune of their ill luck lies with Allah, but most of them are unaware.
Ali Quli Qarai
But whenever any good came to them, they would say, ‘This is our due.’ And if any ill visited them, they took it for ill omens attending Moses and those who were with him. (Look! Indeed the cause of their ill omens is from Allah, but most of them do not know.)
Ali Ünal
But whenever prosperity came their way, they would say: "This is but our due and by our deserving," and whenever evil befell them, they would attribute it to the ill augury (they alleged) of Moses and whoever was in his company. Beware! their auspice (whether evil or good) was decreed by God, but most of them did not know (being ignorant of true knowledge).
Amatul Rahman Omar
But when something good came their way, they said, `This is ours (as we deserved it),´ and if something adverse befell them they would attribute their ill luck to Moses and his companions. Beware! surely, their deeds are (recorded) with Allâh but most of them do not know (this).
English Literal
So if the good/goodness came to them, they said: "This (is) for us." And if a sin/crime hits/strikes them , they get (have) a bad omen with Moses and whom (is) with him. Is it not, but their bad omen (is) at God, and but most of them do not know.
Faridul Haque
So when good would reach them they would say, "This is for us"; and when misfortune reached them, they would infer it as ill omens of Moosa and his companions; pay heed! The misfortune of their ill luck lies with Allah, but most of them are unaware.
Hamid S. Aziz
But whenever good (times) came to them they said, "This is due to our effort." And if evil befell them, they ascribed it to the evil influences of Moses and those with him. Surely, the evil influence is only in the hands of Allah. But most of them know not.
Hilali & Khan
But whenever good came to them, they said: "Ours is this." And if evil afflicted them, they ascribed it to evil omens connected with Musa (Moses) and those with him. Be informed! Verily, their evil omens are with Allah but most of them know not.

But whenever a good thing, [such as] fertility and abundance, befell them, they said, `This belongs to us', that is, we deserve it, and they did not give thanks for it; and whenever an evil thing, [such as] drought or hardship, smote them, they would augur ill of Moses and those, believers, with him. Surely their ill augury is with God, Who brings it upon them, but most of them do not know, that whatever befalls them is from Him.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
فَإِذَا جَاءتْهُمُ الْحَسَنَةُ
That they might remember (take heed). But whenever good came to them,
such as a fertile season and provisions,
قَالُواْ لَنَا هَـذِهِ
they said, "This is for us."
because we deserve it,
وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّيَةٌ
and if evil afflicted them,
drought and famine,
يَطَّيَّرُواْ بِمُوسَى وَمَن مَّعَهُ
they considered it an omen about Musa and those with him.
saying that this hardship is because of them and what they have done.
Verily, their omens are with Allah.
أَلا إِنَّمَا طَايِرُهُمْ عِندَ اللّهُ
Verily, their omens are with Allah,

وَلَـكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
but most of them know not.
