Al-Qur'an Surah Al-A'raf Verse 129

Al-A'raf [7]: 129 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالُوْٓا اُوْذِيْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ تَأْتِيَنَا وَمِنْۢ بَعْدِ مَا جِئْتَنَا ۗقَالَ عَسٰى رَبُّكُمْ اَنْ يُّهْلِكَ عَدُوَّكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفَكُمْ فِى الْاَرْضِ فَيَنْظُرَ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُوْنَ ࣖ (الأعراف : ٧)

your Lord

will destroy
ʿaduwwakum
عَدُوَّكُمْ
your enemy
wayastakhlifakum
وَيَسْتَخْلِفَكُمْ
and make you successors
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
fayanẓura
فَيَنظُرَ
then see
kayfa
كَيْفَ
how
taʿmalūna
تَعْمَلُونَ
you will do"

Transliteration:

Qaaloo oozeenaa min qabli an taatiyanaa wa mim ba'di maa ji'tanaa; qaala 'asaa Rabbukum ai yuhlika 'aduwwakum wa yastakhli fakum fil ardi fayanzura kaifa ta'maloon (QS. al-ʾAʿrāf:129)

English / Sahih Translation:

They said, "We have been harmed before you came to us and after you have come to us." He said, "Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and grant you succession in the land and see how you will do." (QS. Al-A'raf, ayah 129)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

They said, “We were persecuted before you came to us and after you have come to us.” He said, “Hopefully your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land, then He will see how you act.”

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

They complained, “We have always been oppressed—before and after you came to us ˹with the message˺.” He replied, “Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land to see what you will do.”

Ruwwad Translation Center

They said, “We were oppressed before you came to us and after you came.” He said, “It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land to see how you will do.”

They said, 'We have been hurt before thou camest to us, and after thou camest to us.' He said, 'Perchance your Lord will destroy your enemy, and will make you successors in the land, so that He may behold how you shall do.'

Abdul Haleem

and they replied, ‘We were being persecuted long before you came to us, and since then too.’ He said, ‘Your Lord may well destroy your enemy and make you successors to the land to see how you behave.’

They said: oppressed we have been ere thou camest unto us and since thou hast come unto us. He said: belike your Lord will destroy your enemy and establish yougs in their stead in the land, thathe may see what wise ye act.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They said; "We have had (nothing but) trouble, both before and after thou camest to us." He said; "It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you inheritors in the earth; that so He may try you by your deeds."

Abul Ala Maududi

The people of Moses replied: 'We were oppressed before your coming to us and after it.' Moses said: 'Your Lord will soon destroy your enemy and make you rulers in the land. Then He will see how you act.'

Ahmed Ali

They said: "We were oppressed before you came, and have been since you have come to us." He answered: "It may well be that soon God may destroy your enemy and make you inherit the land, and then see how you behave."

Ahmed Raza Khan

They said, “We have been oppressed before you came to us, and after you have come to us”; he said, “It is likely that your Lord may destroy your enemy and in his place make you the rulers of the earth, and then see what deeds you perform.”

Ali Quli Qarai

They said, ‘We were tormented before you came to us and [also] after you came to us.’ He said, ‘Maybe your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land, and then He will see how you act.’

Ali Ünal

They (having been subjected to persecutions by the Pharaoh) said: "We suffered hurt before you came to us, and since you came to us." He (Moses) replied: "It may well be that your Lord is going to destroy your enemy and make you the inheritors of rule in (some part of) the earth: and then He will look to see how you act (when you hold power)."

Amatul Rahman Omar

They (- the persons of superficial thinking of the Children of Israel) said, `We were persecuted before you came to us and (are being persecuted) even after you have come to us.´ (Moses) said, `It is well nigh that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you rulers in the (promised) land and then He will see how you act.´

English Literal

They said: "We were mildly harmed from before that you came to us, and from after what you came to us." He said: "Maybe/perhaps (hopefully) your Lord, that He destroys/perishes your enemy and He makes you successors in the earth/Planet Earth/land, so He sees/watches how you do/work ."

Faridul Haque

They said, "We have been oppressed before you came to us, and after you have come to us"; he said, "It is likely that your Lord may destroy your enemy and in his place make you the rulers of the earth, and then see what deeds you perform."

Hamid S. Aziz

They said, "We suffered before you did come to us, and also since you have come to us." Said he, "It may be that your Lord will destroy your foe, and will make you vicegerents (inheritors, successors) in the earth, that He may see how you behave."

Hilali & Khan

They said: "We (Children of Israel) had suffered troubles before you came to us, and since you have come to us." He said: "It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors on the earth, so that He may see how you act?"

Maulana Mohammad Ali

Moses said to his people: Ask help from Allah and be patient. Surely the land is Allah’s -- He gives it for an inheritance to such of His servants as He pleases. And the end is for those who keep their duty.

They said: We have been persecuted before you came to us and since you have come to us. He said: It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you rulers in the land, then He will see how you act.

They said: We suffered hurt before thou camest unto us, and since thou hast come unto us. He said: It may be that your Lord is going to destroy your adversary and make you viceroys in the earth, that He may see how ye behave.

His people said, "We suffered a great deal before you came and we are still suffering even after you have come." Moses (tried to encourage them) by saying, "There is hope that your Lord will destroy your enemies and make you (their) successors in the land. So consider how you act."

Qaribullah & Darwish

They replied: 'We were hurt before you came to us, and after you came to us' He said: 'Your Lord may destroy your enemies and make you inheritors in the land. Then He will see how you conduct yourselves'

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

They said: "We suffered troubles before you came to us, and since you have come to us." He said: "It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors on the earth, so that He may see how you act"

Wahiduddin Khan

They replied, "We were being persecuted before you came to us, and we are still being persecuted." He said, "Your Lord may well destroy your enemy and make you successors to the land. Then He will see how you conduct yourselves."

Talal Itani

They said, “We were persecuted before you came to us, and after you came to us.” He said, “Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy, and make you successors in the land; then He will see how you behave.”

Tafsir jalalayn

They said, `We suffered harm before you came to us, and since you have come to us.' He said, `Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land, that He may observe how you shall act', in it.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالُواْ أُوذِينَا مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَأْتِينَا وَمِن بَعْدِ مَا جِيْتَنَا

"Verily, the earth is Allah's. He gives it as a heritage to whom He wills of His servants; and the (blessed) end is for the pious and righteous persons."

They said;"We suffered troubles before you came to us, and since you have come to us."

The Children of Israel replied to Musa, `they (Fir`awn and his people) inflicted humiliation and disgrace on us, some you witnessed, both before and after you came to us, O Musa'!

Musa replied, reminding them of their present situation and how it will change in the future,

قَالَ عَسَى رَبُّكُمْ أَن يُهْلِكَ عَدُوَّكُمْ

"It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy. .."

encouraging them to appreciate Allah when the afflictions are removed and replaced by a bounty.

وَيَسْتَخْلِفَكُمْ فِي الَارْضِ

فَيَنظُرَ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ



and make you successors on the earth, so that He may see how you act!"
