(The Heights)

171

۞ وَاِذْ نَتَقْنَا الْجَبَلَ فَوْقَهُمْ كَاَنَّهٗ ظُلَّةٌ وَّظَنُّوْٓا اَنَّهٗ وَاقِعٌۢ بِهِمْۚ خُذُوْا مَآ اٰتَيْنٰكُمْ بِقُوَّةٍ وَّاذْكُرُوْا مَا فِيْهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُوْنَ ࣖ ١٧١

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
nataqnā
نَتَقْنَا
We raised
l-jabala
ٱلْجَبَلَ
the mountain
fawqahum
فَوْقَهُمْ
above them
ka-annahu
كَأَنَّهُۥ
as if it was
ẓullatun
ظُلَّةٌ
a canopy
waẓannū
وَظَنُّوٓا۟
and they thought
annahu
أَنَّهُۥ
that it
wāqiʿun
وَاقِعٌۢ
(would) fall
bihim
بِهِمْ
upon them
khudhū
خُذُوا۟
(We said) Take
مَآ
what
ātaynākum
ءَاتَيْنَٰكُم
We have given you
biquwwatin
بِقُوَّةٍ
with strength
wa-udh'kurū
وَٱذْكُرُوا۟
and remember
مَا
what
fīhi
فِيهِ
(is) in it
laʿallakum
لَعَلَّكُمْ
so that you may
tattaqūna
تَتَّقُونَ
fear Allah"
And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them, [and Allah said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allah." (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 171)
Tafsir
172

وَاِذْ اَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنْۢ بَنِيْٓ اٰدَمَ مِنْ ظُهُوْرِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَاَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلٰٓى اَنْفُسِهِمْۚ اَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْۗ قَالُوْا بَلٰىۛ شَهِدْنَا ۛاَنْ تَقُوْلُوْا يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ اِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هٰذَا غٰفِلِيْنَۙ ١٧٢

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
akhadha
أَخَذَ
(was) taken
rabbuka
رَبُّكَ
(by) your Lord
min
مِنۢ
from
banī
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children
ādama
ءَادَمَ
(of) Adam
min
مِن
from
ẓuhūrihim
ظُهُورِهِمْ
their loins
dhurriyyatahum
ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ
their descendants
wa-ashhadahum
وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ
and made them testify
ʿalā
عَلَىٰٓ
over
anfusihim
أَنفُسِهِمْ
themselves
alastu
أَلَسْتُ
"Am I not
birabbikum
بِرَبِّكُمْۖ
your Lord?"
qālū
قَالُوا۟
They said
balā
بَلَىٰۛ
"Yes
shahid'nā
شَهِدْنَآۛ
we have testified"
an
أَن
Lest
taqūlū
تَقُولُوا۟
you say
yawma
يَوْمَ
(on the) Day
l-qiyāmati
ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ
(of) the Resurrection
innā
إِنَّا
"Indeed
kunnā
كُنَّا
we were
ʿan
عَنْ
about
hādhā
هَٰذَا
this
ghāfilīna
غَٰفِلِينَ
unaware"
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam – from their loins – their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] – lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware." (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 172)
Tafsir
173

اَوْ تَقُوْلُوْٓا اِنَّمَآ اَشْرَكَ اٰبَاۤؤُنَا مِنْ قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّيَّةً مِّنْۢ بَعْدِهِمْۚ اَفَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ الْمُبْطِلُوْنَ ١٧٣

aw
أَوْ
Or
taqūlū
تَقُولُوٓا۟
you say
innamā
إِنَّمَآ
"Only
ashraka
أَشْرَكَ
partners (were) associated (with Allah)
ābāunā
ءَابَآؤُنَا
(by) our forefathers
min
مِن
from
qablu
قَبْلُ
before (us)
wakunnā
وَكُنَّا
and we are
dhurriyyatan
ذُرِّيَّةً
descendants
min
مِّنۢ
from
baʿdihim
بَعْدِهِمْۖ
after them
afatuh'likunā
أَفَتُهْلِكُنَا
So will You destroy us
bimā
بِمَا
for what
faʿala
فَعَلَ
did
l-mub'ṭilūna
ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ
the falsifiers?"
Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allah before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?" (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 173)
Tafsir
174

وَكَذٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ الْاٰيٰتِ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُوْنَ ١٧٤

wakadhālika
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
And thus
nufaṣṣilu
نُفَصِّلُ
We explain
l-āyāti
ٱلْءَايَٰتِ
the Verses
walaʿallahum
وَلَعَلَّهُمْ
so that they may
yarjiʿūna
يَرْجِعُونَ
return
And thus do We [explain in] detail the verses, and perhaps they will return. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 174)
Tafsir
175

وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَاَ الَّذِيْٓ اٰتَيْنٰهُ اٰيٰتِنَا فَانْسَلَخَ مِنْهَا فَاَتْبَعَهُ الشَّيْطٰنُ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْغٰوِيْنَ ١٧٥

wa-ut'lu
وَٱتْلُ
And recite
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
to them
naba-a
نَبَأَ
(the) story
alladhī
ٱلَّذِىٓ
(of the) one whom
ātaynāhu
ءَاتَيْنَٰهُ
We gave [him]
āyātinā
ءَايَٰتِنَا
Our Verses
fa-insalakha
فَٱنسَلَخَ
but he detached
min'hā
مِنْهَا
[from] them
fa-atbaʿahu
فَأَتْبَعَهُ
so followed him
l-shayṭānu
ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ
the Shaitaan
fakāna
فَكَانَ
and he became
mina
مِنَ
of
l-ghāwīna
ٱلْغَاوِينَ
those gone astray
And recite to them, [O Muhammad], the news of him to whom We gave [knowledge of] Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 175)
Tafsir
176

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَرَفَعْنٰهُ بِهَا وَلٰكِنَّهٗٓ اَخْلَدَ اِلَى الْاَرْضِ وَاتَّبَعَ هَوٰىهُۚ فَمَثَلُهٗ كَمَثَلِ الْكَلْبِۚ اِنْ تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْهِ يَلْهَثْ اَوْ تَتْرُكْهُ يَلْهَثْۗ ذٰلِكَ مَثَلُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِيْنَ كَذَّبُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَاۚ فَاقْصُصِ الْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوْنَ ١٧٦

walaw
وَلَوْ
And if
shi'nā
شِئْنَا
We willed
larafaʿnāhu
لَرَفَعْنَٰهُ
surely We (could) have raised him
bihā
بِهَا
with these
walākinnahu
وَلَٰكِنَّهُۥٓ
[and] but he
akhlada
أَخْلَدَ
adhered
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
wa-ittabaʿa
وَٱتَّبَعَ
and followed
hawāhu
هَوَىٰهُۚ
his (vain) desires
famathaluhu
فَمَثَلُهُۥ
So his example
kamathali
كَمَثَلِ
(is) like (the) example
l-kalbi
ٱلْكَلْبِ
(of) the dog
in
إِن
if
taḥmil
تَحْمِلْ
you attack
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
[on] him
yalhath
يَلْهَثْ
he lolls out his tongue
aw
أَوْ
or
tatruk'hu
تَتْرُكْهُ
if you leave him
yalhath
يَلْهَثۚ
he lolls out his tongue
dhālika
ذَّٰلِكَ
That
mathalu
مَثَلُ
(is the) example
l-qawmi
ٱلْقَوْمِ
(of) the people
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
kadhabū
كَذَّبُوا۟
denied
biāyātinā
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَاۚ
[in] Our Signs
fa-uq'ṣuṣi
فَٱقْصُصِ
So relate
l-qaṣaṣa
ٱلْقَصَصَ
the story
laʿallahum
لَعَلَّهُمْ
so that they may
yatafakkarūna
يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
reflect
And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby, but he adhered [instead] to the earth and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs. So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 176)
Tafsir
177

سَاۤءَ مَثَلًا ۨالْقَوْمُ الَّذِيْنَ كَذَّبُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا وَاَنْفُسَهُمْ كَانُوْا يَظْلِمُوْنَ ١٧٧

sāa
سَآءَ
Evil
mathalan
مَثَلًا
(as) an example
l-qawmu
ٱلْقَوْمُ
(are) the people
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
kadhabū
كَذَّبُوا۟
denied
biāyātinā
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا
Our Signs
wa-anfusahum
وَأَنفُسَهُمْ
and themselves
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they used to
yaẓlimūna
يَظْلِمُونَ
wrong
How evil an example [is that of] the people who denied Our signs and used to wrong themselves. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 177)
Tafsir
178

مَنْ يَّهْدِ اللّٰهُ فَهُوَ الْمُهْتَدِيْۚ وَمَنْ يُّضْلِلْ فَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ الْخٰسِرُوْنَ ١٧٨

man
مَن
Whoever
yahdi
يَهْدِ
(is) guided
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
fahuwa
فَهُوَ
then he
l-muh'tadī
ٱلْمُهْتَدِىۖ
(is) the guided one
waman
وَمَن
while whoever
yuḍ'lil
يُضْلِلْ
He lets go astray
fa-ulāika
فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
then those
humu
هُمُ
[they]
l-khāsirūna
ٱلْخَٰسِرُونَ
(are) the losers
Whoever Allah guides – he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray – it is those who are the losers. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 178)
Tafsir
179

وَلَقَدْ ذَرَأْنَا لِجَهَنَّمَ كَثِيْرًا مِّنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِۖ لَهُمْ قُلُوْبٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُوْنَ بِهَاۖ وَلَهُمْ اَعْيُنٌ لَّا يُبْصِرُوْنَ بِهَاۖ وَلَهُمْ اٰذَانٌ لَّا يَسْمَعُوْنَ بِهَاۗ اُولٰۤىِٕكَ كَالْاَنْعَامِ بَلْ هُمْ اَضَلُّ ۗ اُولٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ الْغٰفِلُوْنَ ١٧٩

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
dharanā
ذَرَأْنَا
We have created
lijahannama
لِجَهَنَّمَ
for Hell
kathīran
كَثِيرًا
many
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-jini
ٱلْجِنِّ
the jinn
wal-insi
وَٱلْإِنسِۖ
and men
lahum
لَهُمْ
For them
qulūbun
قُلُوبٌ
(are) hearts
لَّا
(but) not
yafqahūna
يَفْقَهُونَ
they understand
bihā
بِهَا
with them
walahum
وَلَهُمْ
and for them
aʿyunun
أَعْيُنٌ
(are) eyes
لَّا
(but) not
yub'ṣirūna
يُبْصِرُونَ
they see
bihā
بِهَا
with them
walahum
وَلَهُمْ
and for them
ādhānun
ءَاذَانٌ
(are) ears
لَّا
(but) not
yasmaʿūna
يَسْمَعُونَ
they hear
bihā
بِهَآۚ
with them
ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
Those
kal-anʿāmi
كَٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ
(are) like cattle
bal
بَلْ
nay
hum
هُمْ
they
aḍallu
أَضَلُّۚ
(are) more astray
ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
Those -
humu
هُمُ
they
l-ghāfilūna
ٱلْغَٰفِلُونَ
(are) the heedless
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 179)
Tafsir
180

وَلِلّٰهِ الْاَسْمَاۤءُ الْحُسْنٰى فَادْعُوْهُ بِهَاۖ وَذَرُوا الَّذِيْنَ يُلْحِدُوْنَ فِيْٓ اَسْمَاۤىِٕهٖۗ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ ۖ ١٨٠

walillahi
وَلِلَّهِ
And for Allah
l-asmāu
ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ
(are) the names -
l-ḥus'nā
ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ
the most beautiful
fa-id'ʿūhu
فَٱدْعُوهُ
so invoke Him
bihā
بِهَاۖ
by them
wadharū
وَذَرُوا۟
And leave
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
yul'ḥidūna
يُلْحِدُونَ
deviate
فِىٓ
concerning
asmāihi
أَسْمَٰٓئِهِۦۚ
His names
sayuj'zawna
سَيُجْزَوْنَ
They will be recompensed
مَا
for what
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they used to
yaʿmalūna
يَعْمَلُونَ
do
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 180)
Tafsir
