(The Heights)

161

وَاِذْ قِيْلَ لَهُمُ اسْكُنُوْا هٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةَ وَكُلُوْا مِنْهَا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ وَقُوْلُوْا حِطَّةٌ وَّادْخُلُوا الْبَابَ سُجَّدًا نَّغْفِرْ لَكُمْ خَطِيْۤـٰٔتِكُمْۗ سَنَزِيْدُ الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ ١٦١

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
qīla
قِيلَ
it was said
lahumu
لَهُمُ
to them
us'kunū
ٱسْكُنُوا۟
"Live
hādhihi
هَٰذِهِ
(in) this
l-qaryata
ٱلْقَرْيَةَ
city
wakulū
وَكُلُوا۟
and eat
min'hā
مِنْهَا
from it
ḥaythu
حَيْثُ
wherever
shi'tum
شِئْتُمْ
you wish
waqūlū
وَقُولُوا۟
and say
ḥiṭṭatun
حِطَّةٌ
"Repentance"
wa-ud'khulū
وَٱدْخُلُوا۟
and enter
l-bāba
ٱلْبَابَ
the gate
sujjadan
سُجَّدًا
prostrating
naghfir
نَّغْفِرْ
We will forgive
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
khaṭīātikum
خَطِيٓـَٰٔتِكُمْۚ
your sins
sanazīdu
سَنَزِيدُ
We will increase (reward)
l-muḥ'sinīna
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
(of) the good-doers"
And [mention, O Muhammad], when it was said to them, "Dwell in this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins],' and enter the gate bowing humbly; We will [then] forgive you your sins. We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]." (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 161)
Tafsir
162

فَبَدَّلَ الَّذِيْنَ ظَلَمُوْا مِنْهُمْ قَوْلًا غَيْرَ الَّذِيْ قِيْلَ لَهُمْ فَاَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِجْزًا مِّنَ السَّمَاۤءِ بِمَا كَانُوْا يَظْلِمُوْنَ ࣖ ١٦٢

fabaddala
فَبَدَّلَ
But changed
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ẓalamū
ظَلَمُوا۟
wronged
min'hum
مِنْهُمْ
among them
qawlan
قَوْلًا
word
ghayra
غَيْرَ
other than
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
(that) which
qīla
قِيلَ
was said
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
fa-arsalnā
فَأَرْسَلْنَا
So We sent
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
upon them
rij'zan
رِجْزًا
torment
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-samāi
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the sky
bimā
بِمَا
because
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they were
yaẓlimūna
يَظْلِمُونَ
doing wrong
But those who wronged among them changed [the words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them. So We sent upon them a punishment from the sky for the wrong that they were doing. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 162)
Tafsir
163

وَسْـَٔلْهُمْ عَنِ الْقَرْيَةِ الَّتِيْ كَانَتْ حَاضِرَةَ الْبَحْرِۘ اِذْ يَعْدُوْنَ فِى السَّبْتِ اِذْ تَأْتِيْهِمْ حِيْتَانُهُمْ يَوْمَ سَبْتِهِمْ شُرَّعًا وَّيَوْمَ لَا يَسْبِتُوْنَۙ لَا تَأْتِيْهِمْ ۛ كَذٰلِكَ ۛنَبْلُوْهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوْا يَفْسُقُوْنَ ١٦٣

wasalhum
وَسْـَٔلْهُمْ
And ask them
ʿani
عَنِ
about
l-qaryati
ٱلْقَرْيَةِ
the town
allatī
ٱلَّتِى
which
kānat
كَانَتْ
was
ḥāḍirata
حَاضِرَةَ
situated
l-baḥri
ٱلْبَحْرِ
(by) the sea
idh
إِذْ
when
yaʿdūna
يَعْدُونَ
they transgressed
فِى
in
l-sabti
ٱلسَّبْتِ
the (matter of) Sabbath
idh
إِذْ
when
tatīhim
تَأْتِيهِمْ
came to them
ḥītānuhum
حِيتَانُهُمْ
their fish
yawma
يَوْمَ
(on the) day
sabtihim
سَبْتِهِمْ
(of) their Sabbath
shurraʿan
شُرَّعًا
visibly
wayawma
وَيَوْمَ
and (on the) day
لَا
not
yasbitūna
يَسْبِتُونَۙ
they had Sabbath
لَا
(they did) not
tatīhim
تَأْتِيهِمْۚ
come to them
kadhālika
كَذَٰلِكَ
Thus
nablūhum
نَبْلُوهُم
We test them
bimā
بِمَا
because
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they were
yafsuqūna
يَفْسُقُونَ
defiantly disobeying
And ask them about the town that was by the sea – when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath – when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 163)
Tafsir
164

وَاِذْ قَالَتْ اُمَّةٌ مِّنْهُمْ لِمَ تَعِظُوْنَ قَوْمًاۙ ۨاللّٰهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ اَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيْدًاۗ قَالُوْا مَعْذِرَةً اِلٰى رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُوْنَ ١٦٤

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
qālat
قَالَتْ
said
ummatun
أُمَّةٌ
a community
min'hum
مِّنْهُمْ
among them
lima
لِمَ
"Why
taʿiẓūna
تَعِظُونَ
(do) you preach
qawman
قَوْمًاۙ
a people
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(whom) Allah
muh'likuhum
مُهْلِكُهُمْ
(is going to) destroy them
aw
أَوْ
or
muʿadhibuhum
مُعَذِّبُهُمْ
punish them
ʿadhāban
عَذَابًا
(with) a punishment
shadīdan
شَدِيدًاۖ
severe?"
qālū
قَالُوا۟
They said
maʿdhiratan
مَعْذِرَةً
"To be absolved
ilā
إِلَىٰ
before
rabbikum
رَبِّكُمْ
your Lord
walaʿallahum
وَلَعَلَّهُمْ
and that they may
yattaqūna
يَتَّقُونَ
become righteous"
And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allah is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him." (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 164)
Tafsir
165

فَلَمَّا نَسُوْا مَا ذُكِّرُوْا بِهٖٓ اَنْجَيْنَا الَّذِيْنَ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ السُّوْۤءِ وَاَخَذْنَا الَّذِيْنَ ظَلَمُوْا بِعَذَابٍۢ بَـِٔيْسٍۢ بِمَا كَانُوْا يَفْسُقُوْنَ ١٦٥

falammā
فَلَمَّا
So when
nasū
نَسُوا۟
they forgot
مَا
what
dhukkirū
ذُكِّرُوا۟
they had been reminded
bihi
بِهِۦٓ
with [it]
anjaynā
أَنجَيْنَا
We saved
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
yanhawna
يَنْهَوْنَ
forbade
ʿani
عَنِ
[from]
l-sūi
ٱلسُّوٓءِ
the evil
wa-akhadhnā
وَأَخَذْنَا
and We seized
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ẓalamū
ظَلَمُوا۟
wronged
biʿadhābin
بِعَذَابٍۭ
with a punishment
baīsin
بَـِٔيسٍۭ
wretched
bimā
بِمَا
because
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they were
yafsuqūna
يَفْسُقُونَ
defiantly disobeying
And when they [i.e., those advised] forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 165)
Tafsir
166

فَلَمَّا عَتَوْا عَنْ مَّا نُهُوْا عَنْهُ قُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُوْنُوْا قِرَدَةً خَاسِـِٕيْنَ ١٦٦

falammā
فَلَمَّا
So when
ʿataw
عَتَوْا۟
they exceeded all bounds
ʿan
عَن
about
مَّا
what
nuhū
نُهُوا۟
they were forbidden
ʿanhu
عَنْهُ
from it
qul'nā
قُلْنَا
We said
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
kūnū
كُونُوا۟
"Be
qiradatan
قِرَدَةً
apes
khāsiīna
خَٰسِـِٔينَ
despised"
So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised." (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 166)
Tafsir
167

وَاِذْ تَاَذَّنَ رَبُّكَ لَيَبْعَثَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ اِلٰى يَوْمِ الْقِيٰمَةِ مَنْ يَّسُوْمُهُمْ سُوْۤءَ الْعَذَابِۗ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَسَرِيْعُ الْعِقَابِۖ وَاِنَّهٗ لَغَفُوْرٌ رَّحِيْمٌ ١٦٧

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
ta-adhana
تَأَذَّنَ
declared
rabbuka
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
layabʿathanna
لَيَبْعَثَنَّ
that He would surely send
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
upon them
ilā
إِلَىٰ
till
yawmi
يَوْمِ
(the) Day
l-qiyāmati
ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ
(of) the Resurrection
man
مَن
(those) who
yasūmuhum
يَسُومُهُمْ
would afflict them
sūa
سُوٓءَ
(with) a grievous
l-ʿadhābi
ٱلْعَذَابِۗ
[the] punishment
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
rabbaka
رَبَّكَ
your Lord
lasarīʿu
لَسَرِيعُ
(is) surely swift
l-ʿiqābi
ٱلْعِقَابِۖ
(in) the retribution
wa-innahu
وَإِنَّهُۥ
but indeed He
laghafūrun
لَغَفُورٌ
(is) surely Oft-Forgiving
raḥīmun
رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful
And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 167)
Tafsir
168

وَقَطَّعْنٰهُمْ فِى الْاَرْضِ اُمَمًاۚ مِنْهُمُ الصّٰلِحُوْنَ وَمِنْهُمْ دُوْنَ ذٰلِكَ ۖوَبَلَوْنٰهُمْ بِالْحَسَنٰتِ وَالسَّيِّاٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُوْنَ ١٦٨

waqaṭṭaʿnāhum
وَقَطَّعْنَٰهُمْ
And We divided them
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
umaman
أُمَمًاۖ
(as) nations
min'humu
مِّنْهُمُ
Among them
l-ṣāliḥūna
ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ
(are) the righteous
wamin'hum
وَمِنْهُمْ
and among them
dūna
دُونَ
(are) other than
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَۖ
that
wabalawnāhum
وَبَلَوْنَٰهُم
And We tested them
bil-ḥasanāti
بِٱلْحَسَنَٰتِ
with the good
wal-sayiāti
وَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ
and the bad
laʿallahum
لَعَلَّهُمْ
so that they may
yarjiʿūna
يَرْجِعُونَ
return
And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience]. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 168)
Tafsir
169

فَخَلَفَ مِنْۢ بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ وَّرِثُوا الْكِتٰبَ يَأْخُذُوْنَ عَرَضَ هٰذَا الْاَدْنٰى وَيَقُوْلُوْنَ سَيُغْفَرُ لَنَاۚ وَاِنْ يَّأْتِهِمْ عَرَضٌ مِّثْلُهٗ يَأْخُذُوْهُۗ اَلَمْ يُؤْخَذْ عَلَيْهِمْ مِّيْثَاقُ الْكِتٰبِ اَنْ لَّا يَقُوْلُوْا عَلَى اللّٰهِ اِلَّا الْحَقَّ وَدَرَسُوْا مَا فِيْهِۗ وَالدَّارُ الْاٰخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِيْنَ يَتَّقُوْنَۗ اَفَلَا تَعْقِلُوْنَ ١٦٩

فَخَلَفَ
Then succeeded
min
مِنۢ
from
baʿdihim
بَعْدِهِمْ
after them
khalfun
خَلْفٌ
successors
warithū
وَرِثُوا۟
(who) inherited
l-kitāba
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the Book
yakhudhūna
يَأْخُذُونَ
taking
ʿaraḍa
عَرَضَ
goods
hādhā
هَٰذَا
(of) this
l-adnā
ٱلْأَدْنَىٰ
the lower (life)
wayaqūlūna
وَيَقُولُونَ
and they say
sayugh'faru
سَيُغْفَرُ
"It will be forgiven"
lanā
لَنَا
"for us"
wa-in
وَإِن
And if
yatihim
يَأْتِهِمْ
comes to them
ʿaraḍun
عَرَضٌ
goods
mith'luhu
مِّثْلُهُۥ
similar to it
yakhudhūhu
يَأْخُذُوهُۚ
they will take it
alam
أَلَمْ
Was not
yu'khadh
يُؤْخَذْ
taken
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِم
on them
mīthāqu
مِّيثَٰقُ
Covenant
l-kitābi
ٱلْكِتَٰبِ
(of) the Book
an
أَن
that
لَّا
not
yaqūlū
يَقُولُوا۟
they will say
ʿalā
عَلَى
about
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
illā
إِلَّا
except
l-ḥaqa
ٱلْحَقَّ
the truth
wadarasū
وَدَرَسُوا۟
while they studied
مَا
what
fīhi
فِيهِۗ
(is) in it?
wal-dāru
وَٱلدَّارُ
And the home
l-ākhiratu
ٱلْءَاخِرَةُ
(of) the Hereafter
khayrun
خَيْرٌ
(is) better
lilladhīna
لِّلَّذِينَ
for those who
yattaqūna
يَتَّقُونَۗ
fear Allah
afalā
أَفَلَا
So will not
taʿqilūna
تَعْقِلُونَ
you use intellect?
And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] taken from them that they would not say about Allah except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah, so will you not use reason? (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 169)
Tafsir
170

وَالَّذِيْنَ يُمَسِّكُوْنَ بِالْكِتٰبِ وَاَقَامُوا الصَّلٰوةَۗ اِنَّا لَا نُضِيْعُ اَجْرَ الْمُصْلِحِيْنَ ١٧٠

wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
yumassikūna
يُمَسِّكُونَ
hold fast
bil-kitābi
بِٱلْكِتَٰبِ
to the Book
wa-aqāmū
وَأَقَامُوا۟
and establish
l-ṣalata
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
the prayer
innā
إِنَّا
indeed We
لَا
(will) not
nuḍīʿu
نُضِيعُ
[We] let go waste
ajra
أَجْرَ
(the) reward
l-muṣ'liḥīna
ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَ
(of) the reformers
But those who hold fast to the Book [i.e., the Quran] and establish prayer – indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers. (QS. [7] Al-A'raf: 170)
