Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Qalam Verse 49

Al-Qalam [68]: 49 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

لَوْلَآ اَنْ تَدَارَكَهٗ نِعْمَةٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّهٖ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاۤءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُوْمٌ (القلم : ٦٨)

onto (the) naked shore

وَهُوَ
while he
madhmūmun
مَذْمُومٌ
(was) blamed

Transliteration:

Law laaa an tadaara kahoo ni'matum mir rabbihee lanubiza bil'araaa'i wa huwa mazmoom (QS. al-Q̈alam:49)

English / Sahih Translation:

If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured. (QS. Al-Qalam, ayah 49)

Had not a favour from His Lord come to his help, he would have been cast in the wilderness in a reproachable state.

English Literal

Had it not been for a blessing/goodness from his Lord, (that) caught up (to)/reached him , he would have been discarded/cast off at the open/space, and he is blamed/defamed .

Were it not for his Lord’s favor that reached him, he would have been thrown into the wilderness, fully despised.

Tafsir jalalayn

Had it not been for a grace, a mercy, from his Lord that reached him, he would have surely been cast, out of the belly of the whale, onto a wilderness, a desolate land, while he was blameworthy -- but he was shown mercy and was therefore cast out blameless.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Had not a grace from his Lord reached him, he would indeed have been (left in the stomach of the fish, but We forgave him), so he was cast off on the naked shore, while he was to be blamed.

Then Allah goes on to say,

فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
