Al-Qur'an Surah At-Taghabun Verse 9

(Be mindful of) the day when He will gather you for the Day of Gathering. That will be the Day of loss and gain. Whoever believes in Allah, and does righteously, He will write off his evil deeds, and will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will live forever. That is the great achievement.

(You shall come to know that) when He will assemble you on the Day of Gathering. That shall be the Day (to determine) mutual gains and losses. Whoever believes in Allah and acts righteously, Allah will have his evil deeds expunged and will admit him to Gardens beneath which rivers flow. Therein they shall abide forever. That is the supreme triumph.

The day He will gather you together on the Day of Gathering, will be the day of Judgement. He who believed and did the right, will have his evil deeds expunged by God and admitted to gardens with rivers flowing by, and abide there perpetually. This will be the great achievement of success.

The day when He will gather you, on the Day of Collective Assembly – that is the day when the loss of the losers will be laid bare; and whoever believes in Allah and does good deeds, Allah will relieve him of his sins and admit him into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, for them to abide in it forever; this is the greatest success.

When He will you bring you together for the Day of Gathering, it will be a day of privation [and regret]. As for those who have faith in Allah and act righteously, He shall absolve them of their misdeeds and admit them into gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them forever. On the Day when He will assemble you all for the Day of Assembly – that will be the day of loss for some (the unbelievers) and gain for some (the believers). Whoever believes in God and does good, righteous deeds, He will blot out from them their evil deeds (which they sometimes happen to commit), and admit them into Gardens through which rivers flow, therein to abide forever. That is the supreme triumph.

Beware of the day when He shall gather you together for the Day of Gathering. That will be the Day of the Manifestation of losses. Those who believe in Allâh and act to suit the requirement of it (- the true Faith), will be acquitted of their evil deeds. He will admit them to the Gardens served with running streams. They will abide therein for ever and ever. That is the grand achievement!

English Literal

A day/time He gathers/collects you to the Gathering Day/Resurrection Day, that (is) Day of the Forgetfulness/Cheating (the day people feel cheated by the short worldly life) and who believed with (in) God and makes/does correct/righteous deeds, He covers/substitutes from him his sins/crimes, and He makes him enter treed gardens/paradises, the rivers/waterways flow from beneath it, immortally/eternally in it (for) ever (E), that (is) the winning/success, the great.

Tafsir jalalayn

Mention, the day when He will gather you for the Day of Gathering, the Day of Resurrection, that will be the Day of Dispossession, [on which] the believers will dupe the disbelievers by occupying [what would have been] their places in Paradise, had they believed, as well as [appropriating] their [believing] spouses. And [as for] those who believe in God and act righteously, He will absolve them of their misdeeds and admit them into gardens underneath which rivers flow (a variant reading for both verbs has the first person plural) wherein they will abide. That is the supreme triumph.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

يَوْمَ يَجْمَعُكُمْ لِيَوْمِ الْجَمْعِ

The Day when He will gather you on the Day of Gathering,

meaning the Day of Resurrection. This is the Day when the earlier and later generations will all be gathered in one area, a caller would be heard by them all, and one's vision would easily see them all.

Allah said,

ذلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَّجْمُوعٌ لَّهُ النَّاسُ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَّشْهُودٌ

That is the Day whereon mankind will be gathered together, that is a Day when all will be present. (11;103)

and,

قُلْ إِنَّ الاٌّوَّلِينَ وَالاٌّخِرِينَ

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَى مِيقَـتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

Say;

"(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times. All will surely be gathered together for appointed meeting of a known Day." (56;49-50)

Allah's statement,

ذَلِكَ يَوْمُ التَّغَابُنِ

that will be the Day of At-Taghabun.

Ibn `Abbas said,

"It is one of the names of the Day of Judgement, and that is because the people of Paradise will have gained over the people of the Fire."

Qatadah and Mujahid said similarly.

Muqatil bin Hayyan said,

"There is no mutual loss and gain greater than these entering Paradise and those being taken to the Fire."

Allah explained His statement saying;

وَمَن يُوْمِن بِاللَّهِ وَيَعْمَلْ صَالِحًا يُكَفِّرْ عَنْهُ سَيِّيَاتِهِ

وَيُدْخِلْهُ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الاَْنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا

ذَلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ



وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِأيَاتِنَا أُوْلَيِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا وَبِيْسَ الْمَصِيرُ
