At-Taghabun [64]: 6 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

ذٰلِكَ بِاَنَّهٗ كَانَتْ تَّأْتِيْهِمْ رُسُلُهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنٰتِ فَقَالُوْٓا اَبَشَرٌ يَّهْدُوْنَنَاۖ فَكَفَرُوْا وَتَوَلَّوْا وَّاسْتَغْنَى اللّٰهُ ۗوَاللّٰهُ غَنِيٌّ حَمِيْدٌ (التغابن : ٦٤)

That

بِأَنَّهُۥ
(is) because
kānat
كَانَت

تَّأْتِيهِمْ
come to them
rusuluhum
رُسُلُهُم
their Messengers
bil-bayināti
بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ
with clear proofs
faqālū
فَقَالُوٓا۟
but they said
abasharun
أَبَشَرٌ
"Shall human beings
yahdūnanā
يَهْدُونَنَا
guide us?"
fakafarū
فَكَفَرُوا۟
So they disbelieved
watawallaw
وَتَوَلَّوا۟ۚ
and turned away
wa-is'taghnā
وَّٱسْتَغْنَى
And can do without them
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُۚ
Allah
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
ghaniyyun
غَنِىٌّ
(is) Self-sufficient
ḥamīdun
حَمِيدٌ
Praiseworthy

Transliteration:

Zaalika bi annahoo kaanat taateehim Rusuluhum bilbaiyinaati faqaaloo a basharuny yahdoonanaa fakafaroo wa tawallaw; wastaghnal laah; wallaahu ghaniyyun hameed (QS. at-Taghābun:6)

English / Sahih Translation:

That is because their messengers used to come to them with clear evidences, but they said, "Shall human beings guide us?" and disbelieved and turned away. And Allah dispensed [with them]; and Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy. (QS. At-Taghabun, ayah 6)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

That is because their messengers used to bring them clear proofs, but they said, “Shall some mortals give us guidance?” Thus they disbelieved and turned away, and Allah did not care. Allah is All-Independent, Ever-Praised.

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

That was because their messengers used to come to them with clear proofs, but they said ˹mockingly˺, “How can humans be our guides?” So they persisted in disbelief and turned away. And Allah was not in need ˹of their faith˺. For Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

Ruwwad Translation Center

That is because their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they said, “How can a human guide us?” Thus they disbelieved and turned away, but Allah had no need for them, for Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

That is because their Messengers came to them with the clear signs, and then they said, 'What, shall mortals be our guides?' Therefore they disbelieved, and turned away; and God was in no need of them. And God is All-sufficient, All-laudable.

That is because their messengers came to them with clear signs, yet they said, ‘Should we take guidance from mere mortals?’, rejected the message, and turned away. But God had no need for them: He is all sufficient, worthy of all praise.

That was because their apostles were wont to come Unto them with evidences, but they said: shall a mere human bein guide us? Wherefore they disbelieved and turned away; and Allah needed them not. And Allah is Self Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

That was because there came to them messengers with Clear Signs, but they said; "Shall (mere) human beings direct us?" So they rejected (the Message) and turned away. But Allah can do without (them); and Allah is free of all needs, worthy of all praise.

This was because their Messengers would come to them with Clear Signs, but they would say: “Shall mortals (like ourselves) guide us to the Right Way?” They rejected the Truth and turned away. Thereupon Allah became unconcerned with them, for Allah is Self-Sufficient, Innately Praiseworthy.

Ahmed Ali

This was so because their apostles came to them with clear proofs, but they said: "What. Can a mortal show us the way?" And they denied and turned away; but God was unconcerned. God is all-sufficient, worthy of praise.

Ahmed Raza Khan

This is because their Noble Messengers used to bring clear proofs to them, in response they said, “What! Will humans show us the way?”; they therefore became disbelievers and turned away, and Allah acted independently; and Allah is the Independent, the Most Praiseworthy.

Ali Quli Qarai

That was because their apostles would bring them manifest proofs, but they said, ‘Will humans be our guides?!’ So they disbelieved and turned away, and Allah had no need [of their faith] and Allah is all-sufficient, all-laudable.

This is because the Messengers (appointed for them) came to them consistently with manifest truths (and clear proofs of their being Messengers), but (consistently) they said, "Shall a mere mortal guide us?", and so they disbelieved and turned away (from the warning and hope offered to them). God was independent (of any need of them: it was they who needed to believe in and obey Him). God is All-Wealthy and Self-Sufficient (on Whom the whole creation is dependent), All-Praiseworthy.

Amatul Rahman Omar

That was because their Messengers (of God) kept on coming to them with clear proofs but they said, `Shall a mere human being guide us?´ So they disbelieved and turned away (paying no heed). Thereupon Allâh showed them that He had no need of them. Indeed Allâh is Self-Sufficient (above all needs,) Worthy of All-Praise (in His own right).

English Literal

That (is) because that their messengers were coming to them with evidences, so they said: "Are humans guiding us?" So they disbelieved, and they turned away, and God sufficed (was not in need), and God (is) rich, praiseworthy/commendable.

This is because their Noble Messengers used to bring clear proofs to them, in response they said, “What! Will humans show us the way?”; they therefore became disbelievers and turned away, and Allah acted independently; and Allah is the Independent, the Most Praiseworthy.

That is because there came to them their messengers with clear arguments, but they said, "Shall mortals guide us? So they disbelieved and turned their backs; but Allah is independent of them, and Allah is Absolute (Self-sufficient), the Owner of Praise.

That was because there came to them their Messengers with clear proofs (signs), but they said: "Shall mere men guide us?" So they disbelieved and turned away (from the truth), and Allah was not in need (of them). And Allah is Rich (Free of all wants), Worthy of all praise.

So believe in Allah and His Messenger and the light which we have revealed. And Allah is Aware of what you do.

This was because their messengers came to them with clear proof (to support their prophethood) and they said, "Can mere mortals provide us with guidance?" They rejected the Messengers and turned away. God does not need the worship of anyone. He is Self-sufficient and Praiseworthy.

That is because, when their Messengers came to them with clear proofs they said: 'Shall humans be our guides' They disbelieved and turned away, but Allah was not in need (of them). Allah is the Rich and the Praised.

That was because there came to them their Messengers with Bayyinat, but they said: "Shall mere men guide us" So they disbelieved and turned away. But Allah was not in need. And Allah is not in need, Worthy of all praise.

That was because their messengers came to them with clear signs, but they replied, "Shall mortals be our guides?" And so they rejected the truth and turned away. God has no need of such people; God is self-sufficient and worthy of all praise.

Talal Itani

That is because their messengers came to them with clear explanations, but they said, “Are human beings going to guide us?” So they disbelieved and turned away. But God is in no need. God is Independent and Praiseworthy.

Tafsir jalalayn

That, chastisement in this world, is because (bi-annahu contains the pronoun of the matter) their messengers used to bring them clear signs, manifest proofs for [the validity of] faith, but they said, `Shall [mere] humans (basharan is meant as generic) be our guides?' So they disbelieved and turned away, from faith, and God was independent, [without need] of their faith. And God is Independent, [without need] of His creatures, Praised, praiseworthy in His actions.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُ كَانَت تَّأْتِيهِمْ رُسُلُهُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ

That was because there came to them their Messengers with Bayyinat,

supporting arguments, evidence, and clear proofs,

فَقَالُوا أَبَشَرٌ يَهْدُونَنَا

but they said;"Shall mere men guide us?"

They discounted and dismissed the possibility that the Message would be sent to a human and that their guidance would come by the hands of a man like themselves,

فَكَفَرُوا وَتَوَلَّوا

So they disbelieved and turned away.

they denied the truth and turned away from abiding by it,

وَّاسْتَغْنَى اللَّهُ

But Allah was not in need (of them),

وَاللَّهُ غَنِيٌّ حَمِيدٌ



And Allah is not need, Worthy of all praise.
