Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Munafiqun Verse 5

Al-Munafiqun [63]: 5 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاِذَا قِيْلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ لَوَّوْا رُءُوْسَهُمْ وَرَاَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّوْنَ وَهُمْ مُّسْتَكْبِرُوْنَ (المنافقون : ٦٣)

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when
qīla
قِيلَ
it is said
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
taʿālaw
تَعَالَوْا۟
"Come
yastaghfir
يَسْتَغْفِرْ
will ask forgiveness
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
rasūlu
رَسُولُ
(the) Messenger"
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah"
lawwaw
لَوَّوْا۟
They turn aside
ruūsahum
رُءُوسَهُمْ
their heads
wara-aytahum
وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ
and you see them
yaṣuddūna
يَصُدُّونَ
turning away
wahum
وَهُم
while they
mus'takbirūna
مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ
(are) arrogant

Transliteration:

Wa izaa qeela lahum ta'aalaw yastaghfir lakum rasoolul laahi lawwaw ru'oo sahum wa ra aytahum yasuddoona wa hum mustakbiroon (QS. al-Munāfiq̈ūn:5)

English / Sahih Translation:

And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you," they turn their heads aside and you see them evading while they are arrogant. (QS. Al-Munafiqun, ayah 5)

And when it is said to them, “Come on, so that Allah’s Messenger may pray for your forgiveness”, they twist their heads (in aversion), and you see them turning away in arrogance.

When it is said to them, “Come! The Messenger of Allah will pray for you to be forgiven,” they turn their heads ˹in disgust˺, and you see them ˹O Prophet˺ turn away in arrogance.

And when it is said Unto them: come! that the apostle of Allah may ask forgiveness for you, they twist their heads, and thou beholdest them retire, while they are stiff-necked.

And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allah will pray for your forgiveness", they turn aside their heads, and thou wouldst see them turning away their faces in arrogance.

When it is said to them: “Come, Allah's Messenger will seek forgiveness for you,” they (contemptuously) shake their heads and you see them holding back in pride.

When it is said to them, "Come, and let the Messenger of God ask forgiveness for you (from God)," they turn away their faces, and you see them drawing back in arrogance.

And when it is said to them, `Come so that the Messenger of Allâh may ask forgiveness for you,´ they turn their heads aside (by way of refusal and out of scorn and pride). And you see them keeping others (also) back, while they swell big with pride.

English Literal

And when/if (it) was said to them: "Come, God`s messenger asks for forgiveness for you." They twisted/turned/ bent their heads, and you saw them preventing/obstructing , and they are arrogant.

And when it is said to them, “Come! Allah’s Noble Messenger may seek forgiveness for you” - they turn their heads away, and you will see them turning away in pride.

And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you", they turn back their heads and you may see them turning away while they are inflated with pride.

And when thou seest them, their persons please thee; and if they speak, thou listenest to their speech. They are like pieces of wood, clad with garments. They think every cry to be against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them! How they are turned back!

And when it is said to them: "Come, so that the Messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness from Allah for you," they twist their heads, and you would see them turning away their faces in pride.

When they are told, "Come! The Messenger of God will ask forgiveness for you!" they turn their heads away and you see them walking away arrogantly.

And when it is said to them, “Come, the Messenger of God will ask forgiveness for you,” they bend their heads, and you see them turning away arrogantly.

Tafsir jalalayn

And when it is said to them, `Come, offer apologies, and God's Messenger will ask forgiveness for you', they twist (read lawwaw or law), they turn, their heads, and you see them turning away, rejecting this [offer], disdainful.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Hypocrites are not interested to ask the prophet to ask Allah to forgive Them

Allah the Exalted states about the hypocrites, may Allah curse them,

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

لَوَّوْا رُوُوسَهُمْ

And when it is said to them;"Come, so that the Messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness from Allah for you," they twist their heads,

meaning, they turn away, ignoring this call in arrogance, belittling what they are invited to.

This is why Allah the Exalted said,

وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ



and you would see them turning away their faces in pride.

Allah punished them for this behavior, saying,

سَوَاء عَلَيْهِمْ أَسْتَغْفَرْتَ لَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ لَن يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ
