Al-Qur'an Surah Al-An'am Verse 78

Al-An'am [6]: 78 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَلَمَّا رَاَ الشَّمْسَ بَازِغَةً قَالَ هٰذَا رَبِّيْ هٰذَآ اَكْبَرُۚ فَلَمَّآ اَفَلَتْ قَالَ يٰقَوْمِ اِنِّيْ بَرِيْۤءٌ مِّمَّا تُشْرِكُوْنَ (الأنعام : ٦)

tush'rikūna
تُشْرِكُونَ
you associate (with Allah)"

Transliteration:

Falammmaa ra ashshamsa baazighatan qaala haazaa Rabbee haazaaa akbaru falammaaa afalat qaala yaa qawmi innee bareee'um mimmaa tushrikoon (QS. al-ʾAnʿām:78)

English / Sahih Translation:

And when he saw the sun rising, he said, "This is my lord; this is greater." But when it set, he said, "O my people, indeed I am free from what you associate with Allah. (QS. Al-An'am, ayah 78)

Thereafter, when he saw the sun rising, he said, “This is my Lord. This is greater.” Again, when it vanished, he said, “O my people, I disown whatever you associate with Allah

Then when he beheld the sun rising, he said: 'This is my Lord. This is the greatest of all.' Then, when it went down, he said: 'O my people! Most certainly I am quit of those whom you associate with Allah in His divinity.

When (Azar) saw the sun rise all resplendent, he said: "My Lord is surely this, and the greatest of them all." But the sun also set, and (Abraham) said: "O my people, I am through with those you associate (with God).

Then when he saw the sun shining brightly, he said, “(You say that) this is my Lord? This is the biggest of them all!”; then when it set he said, “O people! I do not have any relation with the whatever you ascribe as partners (to Him).”

Then, when he saw the sun rising, he said, ‘This is my Lord! This is bigger!’ But when it set, he said, ‘O my people, indeed I disown what you take as [His] partners.’

Then, when he beheld the sun rising in all its splendor, he said: "This is my Lord, (is it)?. This one is the greatest of all!" But when it set, he said: "O my people! Surely I am free from your association of partners with God and from whatever you associate with Him as partners."

Amatul Rahman Omar

And when he saw the sun rise with spreading light (he said to them), `Is this my Lord (as you assert, as) this is the biggest? But when it (also) set he said, `O my people! I am surely (sick and) quit of that you associate (with Him).

English Literal

So when he saw the sun rising/emerging, he said: "That (is) my lord, that (is) bigger." So when it set, he said: "You (my) nation, that I am innocent/renouncing from what you share/make partners (with God)."

Then when he saw the sun shining brightly, he said, “(You say that) this is my Lord? This is the biggest of them all!”; then when it set he said, “O people! I do not have any relation with the whatever you ascribe as partners (to Him).”

Then when he saw the moon rising, he said: Is this my Lord? So when it set, he said: If my Lord had not guided me, I should certainly be of the erring people.

Then when he saw the sun rising, he said: Is this my Lord? Is this the greatest? So when it set, he said: O my people! surely I am clear of what you set up (with Allah).

When he saw the rising sun, he said, "This is my Lord for it is greater (than the others)." But when this too faded away, (Abraham) said, "My people, I disavow whatever you consider equal to God.

Then, when he saw the sun rise, shining, he said: 'This must be my Lord, it is larger' But when it set, he said: 'O nation I am quit of what you associate (with Allah, the Creator),

When he saw the sun rising up, he said: "This is my lord. This is greater." But when it Afalat, he said: "O my people! I am indeed free from all that you join as partners in worship with Allah.

Wahiduddin Khan

Then, when he saw the sun shining, he said, "This is my Lord! This is the greatest of all!" Then when it set, he said, "My people, I disown all that you worship besides God.

Talal Itani

Then, when he saw the sun rising, he said, “This is my lord, this is bigger.” But when it set, he said, “O my people, I am innocent of your idolatry.

Tafsir jalalayn

And when he saw the sun rising, he said, `This is my Lord; this is greater!' than the star and the moon (the masculine [demonstrative pronoun] hdh, `this', is used [for the feminine shams, `sun'] because the predicate [rabb, `my Lord'] is masculine). But when it set, and the argument against them had become stronger and they still had not repented, he said, `O my people, surely I am innocent of what you associate, with God, in the way of idols and accidental bodies, which require an originator. They then asked him, `What do you worship?'

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

فَلَمَّا رَأَى الشَّمْسَ بَازِغَةً قَالَ هَـذَا رَبِّي



When he saw the sun rising up, he said;"This is my lord."

this radiating, rising star is my lord,

هَـذَا أَكْبَرُ

This is greater,

bigger than the star and the moon, and more radiant.

فَلَمَّا أَفَلَتْ

But when it Afalat, (set),

قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِّمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ
