English / Sahih Translation:

And certainly were messengers denied before you, but they were patient over the denial, and they were harmed until Our victory came to them. And none can alter the words [i.e., decrees] of Allah. And there has certainly come to you some information about the [previous] messengers. (QS. Al-An'am, ayah 34)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Indeed, many messengers have been rejected before you, but they stood patient against their rejection, and they were persecuted until Our help came to them. No one can change the words of Allah, and of course, some accounts of the messengers have already come to you.

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Indeed, messengers before you were rejected but patiently endured rejection and persecution until Our help came to them. And Allah’s promise ˹to help˺ is never broken. And you have already received some of the narratives of these messengers.

Ruwwad Translation Center

A. J. Arberry

Messengers indeed were cried lies to before thee, yet they endured patiently that they were cried lies to, and were hurt, until Our help came unto them. No man can change the words of God; and there has already come to thee some tiding of the Envoys.

Abdul Haleem

Other messengers were disbelieved before you, and they bore their rejection and persecution steadfastly until Our aid arrived- no one can alter God’s promises. You have already received accounts of these messengers.

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

And apostles have assuredly been belied before thee, but they patiently bare that wherefore they were belied, and they were hurt, until Our succour came to them. And none can change the words of Allah; and assuredly there hath come unto thee some tidings of the sent ones.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Rejected were the messengers before thee; with patience and constancy they bore their rejection and their wrongs, until Our aid did reach them; there is none that can alter the words (and decrees) of Allah. Already hast thou received some account of those messengers.

Abul Ala Maududi

Messengers before you have been given the lie to, and they endured with patience their being given the lie to and being persecuted until the time when Our help reached them. None has the power to alter the words of Allah. Indeed some account of the Messengers has already reached you.

Ahmed Ali

Many an apostle has been accused of lies before you. Yet they bore with fortitude the falsehoods and the hurt until our help arrived. There is no changing the word of God: The news of (past) apostles has come to you already.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And indeed Noble Messengers have been denied before you, so they patiently bore the denial and torture till Our help reached them; and there is none to alter the decisions of Allah; and the news of the Noble Messengers have already reached you.

Ali Quli Qarai

Apostles were certainly denied before you, yet they patiently bore being denied and tormented until Our help came to them. Nothing can change the words of Allah, and there have certainly come to you some of the accounts of the apostles.

Ali Ünal

(Do not be grieved at what they do!) Indeed, Messengers before you were denied (regarding the Message they brought), but they endured with patience the charge of falsehood and the hurt done to them, until Our help reached them: there is none that can change God’s words (alter His decrees and His execution of them). And, indeed, some account of those Messengers has already come to you.

Amatul Rahman Omar

Indeed, Messengers have already been cried lies to even before you, but they patiently persevered inspite of their having been rejected and persecuted till Our help came to them. None can alter the decrees of Allâh. There has already come to you some of the news of the Messengers (gone before).

English Literal

And messengers from before you had been lied to/denied, so they were patient on what they were denied (rejected) and they were harmed mildly, until Our victory/aid came to them, and (there is) no exchanger to God`s words/expressions; and from the messengers` information/news had come to you.

Faridul Haque

And indeed Noble Messengers have been denied before you, so they patiently bore the denial and torture till Our help reached them; and there is none to alter the decisions of Allah; and the news of the Noble Messengers have already reached you.

Hamid S. Aziz

And if their aversion be hard for you, and if you can, seek for a shaft down into the earth, or a ladder up into the sky, to bring them a sign - if Allah pleased He could have brought them all to guidance - be you not then of the ignorant.

Hilali & Khan

Verily, (many) Messengers were denied before you (O Muhammad SAW), but with patience they bore the denial, and they were hurt, till Our Help reached them, and none can alter the Words (Decisions) of Allah. Surely there has reached you the information (news) about the Messengers (before you).

Maulana Mohammad Ali

Tafsir jalalayn

Messengers indeed have been denied before you -- herein is a consolation for the Prophet (s) -- yet they endured patiently the denial and the persecution until Our victorious help came to them, through the destruction of their peoples, so be patient until the victorious help comes to you through the destruction of your people. There is none to change the words of God, His promises, and there has already come to you tidings of the messengers, [tidings] through which your heart can be at peace.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Verily, (many) Messengers were denied before you, but with patience they bore the denial, and they were hurt, till Our help reached them,

This comforts the Prophet's concern for those who denied and rejected him.

Allah also commands the Prophet to be patient, just as the mighty Messengers before him were. He also promised him victory, just as the previous Messengers were victorious and the good end was theirs, after the denial and harm their people placed on them. Then, victory came to them in this life, just as victory is theirs in the Hereafter.

Allah said,

and none can alter the Words of Allah.

This refers to His decision that victory in this life and the Hereafter is for His believing servants.

Allah said in other Ayat,

And, verily, Our Word has gone forth of old for Our servants, the Messengers. That they verily would be made triumphant. And that Our hosts, they verily would be the victors. (37;171-173)

and,

Allah has decreed;"Verily! It is I and My Messengers who shall be the victorious." Verily, Allah is All-Powerful, Almighty. (58;21)

Allah said;

Surely, there has reached you the information about the Messengers (before you).

who were given victory and prevailed over the people who rejected them. And you (O Muhammad), have a good example in them.
