Al-An'am [6]: 20 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

اَلَّذِيْنَ اٰتَيْنٰهُمُ الْكِتٰبَ يَعْرِفُوْنَهٗ كَمَا يَعْرِفُوْنَ اَبْنَاۤءَهُمْۘ اَلَّذِيْنَ خَسِرُوْٓا اَنْفُسَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ ࣖ (الأنعام : ٦)

alladhīna

Those (to) whom
ātaynāhumu
ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمُ
We have given them
l-kitāba
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the Book
yaʿrifūnahu
يَعْرِفُونَهُۥ
they recognize him

Those who

خَسِرُوٓا۟

يُؤْمِنُونَ
believe

Transliteration:

Allazeena aatainaa humul Kitaaba ya'rifoonahoo kamaa ya'rifoona abnaaa'ahum; allazeena khasirooo anfusahum fahum laa yu'minoon (QS. al-ʾAnʿām:20)

English / Sahih Translation:

Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize it as they recognize their [own] sons. Those who will lose themselves [in the Hereafter] do not believe. (QS. Al-An'am, ayah 20)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Those to whom We have given the Book recognize him (the Messenger) as (certainly as) they would recognize their sons. Those who have brought loss to themselves, they are not going to believe.

Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him ˹to be a true prophet˺ as they recognize their own children. Those who have ruined themselves will never believe.

Those whom We have given the Book will recognize this just as they recognize their own ofspring; but those who have courted their own ruin will not believe.

Those whom We have given the Book recognize him just as they recognize their sons. Those who have ruined their souls will not have faith.

Those who were given the Book (before) know him (the Messenger with all his distinguishing attributes) as they know their own sons; yet those who ruin their own selves (by concealing this truth, being overcome by their lusts and worldly interests) – they do not believe.

Those whom We have given this perfect Book recognise him (-the Prophet Muhammad) as they recognise their own sons. Yet those who have lost their souls will not believe.

English Literal

Those whom We brought to (gave) them The Book , they know it as they know their sons, those who lost themselves, so they do not believe.

The people to whom We gave the Book(s) recognise this Prophet (Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him) as they recognise their own sons; those who put their own souls to ruin, do not accept faith.

Who is more unjust than he who forges against Allah a lie, or denies His revelations? Verily, the unjust shall not prosper.

Those to whom We have given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognize him (i.e. Muhammad SAW as a Messenger of Allah, and they also know that there is no Ilah (God) but Allah and Islam is Allah's Religion), as they recognize their own sons. Those who destroy themselves will not believe. (Tafsir At-Tabari)

Say: What thing is the weightiest in testimony? Say: Allah is witness between you and me. And this Qur’an has been revealed to me that with it I may warn you and whomsoever it reaches. Do you really bear witness that there are other gods with Allah? Say: I bear not witness. Say: He is only One God, and surely I am innocent that which you set up (with Him).

Those whom We have given the Book recognize him as they recognize their sons; (as for) those who have lost their souls, they will not believe.

Those to whom We have given the Scriptures know this as they know their own sons. But those who have ruined their souls will not believe.

Those to whom We have given the Book recognize it as they recognize their own children; but those who have lost their souls do not believe.

Tafsir jalalayn

Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognise him, that is, Muhammad (s), by the descriptions of him in their Scripture, as they recognise their sons; those, of them, who have forfeited their own souls do not believe, in him.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

الَّذِينَ اتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَعْرِفُونَهُ كَمَا يَعْرِفُونَ أَبْنَاءهُمُ

Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize him, as they recognize their own children.

Allah says, the People of the Book know what you brought them, O Muhammad, as they know their own children. This is because they received good news from the previous Messengers and Prophets about the coming of Muhammad, his attributes, homeland, his migration, and the description of his Ummah.

Allah said next,

الَّذِينَ خَسِرُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ

Those who have lost (destroyed) themselves,

and thus incurred the ultimate loss,

فَهُمْ لَا يُوْمِنُونَ



will not believe.

in this clear matter. A matter about which the previous Prophets gave good news, and a matter extolled about in ancient and modern times.
