Transliteration:

English / Sahih Translation:

And thus do We diversify the verses so they [i.e., the disbelievers] will say, "You have studied," and so We may make it [i.e., the Quran] clear for a people who know. (QS. Al-An'am, ayah 105)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

This is how We bring the verses in diverse ways, so that they say, “you have been tutored”, and so that We may explain it to people who have knowledge.

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And so We vary our signs to the extent that they will say, “You have studied ˹previous scriptures˺,”[[ Allegations have always been made that the Prophet (ﷺ) copied the Quran from the Bible, mostly because of similar narratives in both Scriptures (such as the stories of Adam, Joseph, Moses, and others). Historically, the Bible was not translated into Arabic until centuries after the Prophet (ﷺ). Even if an Arabic translation of the Bible existed at his time, he (ﷺ) could not have copied it because he could not read or write. From an Islamic point of view, similarities stem from the fact that both scriptures came originally from the same source—divine revelation. For more details, see the Introduction.]] and We make this ˹Quran˺ clear for people who know.

Ruwwad Translation Center

This is how We diversify the verses, so that they may say, “you have studied [previous scriptures]”, and so that We may make it clear for people who know.

A. J. Arberry

So We turn about the signs, that they may say, 'Thou hast studied'; and that We may make it clear to a people having knowledge.

Abdul Haleem

This is how We explain Our revelations in various ways- though they will say, ‘You [Muhammad] have been studying’- to make them clear for those who know.

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

And Thus We variously propound the revelation, and this is in order that they may say: thou hast studied, and that We may expound it to a people who know.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Thus do we explain the signs by various (symbols); that they may say, "Thou hast taught (us) diligently," and that We may make the matter clear to those who know.

Abul Ala Maududi

Thus do We make Our signs clear in diverse ways that they might say: 'You have learned this (from somebody)'; and 'We do this in order that We make the Truth clear to the people of knowledge.'

Ahmed Ali

Thus in varied ways We explain Our signs so that they may say: "You have been instructed," and that We might make it clear to those who understand.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And this is how We explain Our verses in different ways that they (the disbelievers) may say to you, (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him), “You have studied” – and to make it clear for the people of knowledge.

Ali Quli Qarai

Thus do We paraphrase the signs variously, lest they should say, ‘You have received instruction,’ and so that We may make it clear for a people who have knowledge.

Ali Ünal

Thus do We set out the signs of the truth and Revelations in diverse ways, so that they (who choose blindness) say, "You have learned it (from somebody else);" this We do in order that We may make it (the truth, the Qur’an) clear to a people seeking knowledge.

Amatul Rahman Omar

Thus do We explain Our revelations in diverse ways (that the truth might become evident), but (its one result is) that they (-the disbelievers) will say (to the Prophet), `You have learnt well and diligently (from previous Scripture); but (We vary the revelations) that it may be a clear explanation from Us to the people who have knowledge.

English Literal

And like that We elaborate linguistically the evidences/verses , and to say (P): "You studied/memorized/read." And to clarify/show/explain it to a nation knowing.

Faridul Haque

And this is how We explain Our verses in different ways that they (the disbelievers) may say to you, (O dear Prophet Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him), “You have studied” - and to make it clear for the people of knowledge.

Hamid S. Aziz

Thus do We expound Our Signs in various ways, that they may say, "You have studied," and that We may make clear to those who have knowledge.

Hilali & Khan

Thus We explain variously the Verses so that they (the disbelievers) may say: "You have studied (the Books of the people of the Scripture and brought this Quran from that)" and that We may make the matter clear for the people who have knowledge.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

Clear proofs have indeed come to you from your Lord; so whoever sees, it is for his own good; and whoever is blind, it is to his own harm. And I am not a keeper over you.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

And thus do We repeat the communications and that they may say: You have read; and that We may make it clear to a people who know.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Thus do We display Our revelations that they may say (unto thee, Muhammad): "Thou hast studied," and that We may make (it) clear for people who have knowledge.

Muhammad Sarwar

Thus do We explain Our revelations to them. Let them say,"You have learned (those statements) from other people." We want to explain Our revelations only to those who have knowledge.

Qaribullah & Darwish

As such We make plain Our verses, so that they can say: 'You have studied' in order that We clarify it to a nation that knows.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

Thus We explain variously the verses so that they (the disbelievers) may say: "You have Darasta (studied)" and that We may make the matter clear for the people who have knowledge.

Wahiduddin Khan

This is how We explain Our revelations in various ways -- so that they might come to the point of saying, "You have read this out to us," and that We might make it clear [that this is the truth] to those who are eager to know.

Talal Itani

We thus diversify the revelations, lest they say, “You have studied,” and to clarify them for people who know.

Tafsir jalalayn

And so, in the same way that We have explained what has been mentioned, We dispense, We elucidate, the signs, that they might take heed, and that they, the disbelievers, may say, at the end of this; `You have studied with someone', that you have consulted with (drasta) the People of the Scripture or [that] you have studied (darasta, variant reading) the scriptures of past peoples and brought this [Qur'n] therefrom; and that We may make it clear for a people who have knowledge.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Thus We explain variously the verses...,

meaning, just as We explained the Ayat in this Surah, such as explaining Tawhid and that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. This is how We explain the Ayat and make them plain and clear in all circumstances, to suffice the ignorance of the ignorant; and so that the idolators and disbelievers who deny you say, `O Muhammad! You have Darasta with those who were before you from among the People of the Book and learned with them'.

so that they (the disbelievers) may say;"You have Darasta (studied),"

Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Sa`id bin Jubayr and Ad-Dahhak said similarly.

At-Tabarani narrated that `Amr bin Kaysan said that he heard Ibn Abbas saying,

"Darasta, means, `recited, argued and debated."'

This is similar to Allah's statement about the denial and rebellion of the disbelievers,

Those who disbelieve say, "This (the Qur'an) is nothing but a lie that he has invented, and others have helped him at it, so that they have produced an unjust wrong (thing) and a lie."

And they say, "Tales of the ancients, which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon." (25;4-5)

Allah described the chief liar of the disbelievers (Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi),

Verily, he thought and plotted. So let him be cursed! How he plotted! And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! Then he thought. Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way. Then he turned back and was proud. Then he said, "This is nothing but magic from that of old. This is nothing but the word of a human being!" (74;18-25)

Allah said next,

And that We may make the matter clear for the people who have knowledge.

The Ayah means, so that We explain the matter to a people who know truth, and thus follow it, and know falsehood, and thus avoid it. Allah's wisdom is perfect, He allows the disbelievers to stray, and He guides the people who have knowledge.

Allah said in other Ayat,

By it He misleads many, and many He guides thereby. (2;26)

and;

That He (Allah) may make what is thrown in by Shaytan a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease and whose hearts are hardened. (22;53)

and,

And verily, Allah is the Guide of those who believe, to the straight path. (22;54)

And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the People of the Scripture may arrive at a certainty and the believers may increase in faith, and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say, "What does Allah intend by this example!"

Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. (74;31)

and;

And We send down in the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to the believers, and it increases the wrongdoers in nothing but loss. (17;82)

and,

Say, "It is for those who believe, a guide and a healing. And as for those who disbelieve, there is heaviness in their ears, and it is blindness for them. They are those who are called from a place far away." (41;44)

There are similar Ayat that testify that Allah sent down the Qur'an as guidance to those who fear Him and that He guides or misguides whom He wills by the Qur'an
