Surah Al-Hashr - Word by Word

(The Exile)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

سَبَّحَ لِلّٰهِ مَا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الْاَرْضِۚ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكِيْمُ ١

sabbaḥa
سَبَّحَ
Glorifies
lillahi
لِلَّهِ
[to] Allah
مَا
whatever
فِى
(is) in
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
the heavens
wamā
وَمَا
and whatever
فِى
(is) in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِۖ
the earth
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
And He
l-ʿazīzu
ٱلْعَزِيزُ
(is) the All-Mighty
l-ḥakīmu
ٱلْحَكِيمُ
the All-Wise
Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 1)
Tafsir
2

هُوَ الَّذِيْٓ اَخْرَجَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا مِنْ اَهْلِ الْكِتٰبِ مِنْ دِيَارِهِمْ لِاَوَّلِ الْحَشْرِۗ مَا ظَنَنْتُمْ اَنْ يَّخْرُجُوْا وَظَنُّوْٓا اَنَّهُمْ مَّانِعَتُهُمْ حُصُوْنُهُمْ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ فَاَتٰىهُمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَمْ يَحْتَسِبُوْا وَقَذَفَ فِيْ قُلُوْبِهِمُ الرُّعْبَ يُخْرِبُوْنَ بُيُوْتَهُمْ بِاَيْدِيْهِمْ وَاَيْدِى الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَۙ فَاعْتَبِرُوْا يٰٓاُولِى الْاَبْصَارِ ٢

huwa
هُوَ
He
alladhī
ٱلَّذِىٓ
(is) the One Who
akhraja
أَخْرَجَ
expelled
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieved
min
مِنْ
from
ahli
أَهْلِ
(the) People
l-kitābi
ٱلْكِتَٰبِ
(of) the Scripture
min
مِن
from
diyārihim
دِيَٰرِهِمْ
their homes
li-awwali
لِأَوَّلِ
at (the) first
l-ḥashri
ٱلْحَشْرِۚ
gathering
مَا
Not
ẓanantum
ظَنَنتُمْ
you think
an
أَن
that
yakhrujū
يَخْرُجُوا۟ۖ
they would leave
waẓannū
وَظَنُّوٓا۟
and they thought
annahum
أَنَّهُم
that [they]
māniʿatuhum
مَّانِعَتُهُمْ
would defend them
ḥuṣūnuhum
حُصُونُهُم
their fortresses
mina
مِّنَ
against
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
fa-atāhumu
فَأَتَىٰهُمُ
But came to them
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
min
مِنْ
from
ḥaythu
حَيْثُ
where
lam
لَمْ
not
yaḥtasibū
يَحْتَسِبُوا۟ۖ
they expected
waqadhafa
وَقَذَفَ
and He cast
فِى
into
qulūbihimu
قُلُوبِهِمُ
their hearts
l-ruʿ'ba
ٱلرُّعْبَۚ
[the] terror
yukh'ribūna
يُخْرِبُونَ
they destroyed
buyūtahum
بُيُوتَهُم
their houses
bi-aydīhim
بِأَيْدِيهِمْ
with their hands
wa-aydī
وَأَيْدِى
and the hands
l-mu'minīna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
(of) the believers
fa-iʿ'tabirū
فَٱعْتَبِرُوا۟
So take a lesson
yāulī
يَٰٓأُو۟لِى
O those endowed
l-abṣāri
ٱلْأَبْصَٰرِ
(with) insight
It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allah; but [the decree of] Allah came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 2)
Tafsir
3

وَلَوْلَآ اَنْ كَتَبَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْجَلَاۤءَ لَعَذَّبَهُمْ فِى الدُّنْيَاۗ وَلَهُمْ فِى الْاٰخِرَةِ عَذَابُ النَّارِ ٣

walawlā
وَلَوْلَآ
And if not
an
أَن
[that]
kataba
كَتَبَ
(had) decreed
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
ʿalayhimu
عَلَيْهِمُ
for them
l-jalāa
ٱلْجَلَآءَ
the exile
laʿadhabahum
لَعَذَّبَهُمْ
certainly He (would) have punished them
فِى
in
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَاۖ
the world
walahum
وَلَهُمْ
and for them
فِى
in
l-ākhirati
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
the Hereafter
ʿadhābu
عَذَابُ
(is) a punishment
l-nāri
ٱلنَّارِ
(of) the Fire
And if not that Allah had decreed for them evacuation, He would have punished them in [this] world, and for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 3)
Tafsir
4

ذٰلِكَ بِاَنَّهُمْ شَاۤقُّوا اللّٰهَ وَرَسُوْلَهٗ ۖوَمَنْ يُّشَاۤقِّ اللّٰهَ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ شَدِيْدُ الْعِقَابِ ٤

dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
bi-annahum
بِأَنَّهُمْ
(is) because [they]
shāqqū
شَآقُّوا۟
they opposed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
warasūlahu
وَرَسُولَهُۥۖ
and His Messenger
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
yushāqqi
يُشَآقِّ
opposes
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
fa-inna
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
shadīdu
شَدِيدُ
(is) severe
l-ʿiqābi
ٱلْعِقَابِ
(in) penalty
That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah – then indeed, Allah is severe in penalty. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 4)
Tafsir
5

مَا قَطَعْتُمْ مِّنْ لِّيْنَةٍ اَوْ تَرَكْتُمُوْهَا قَاۤىِٕمَةً عَلٰٓى اُصُوْلِهَا فَبِاِذْنِ اللّٰهِ وَلِيُخْزِيَ الْفٰسِقِيْنَ ٥

مَا
Whatever
qaṭaʿtum
قَطَعْتُم
you cut down
min
مِّن
of
līnatin
لِّينَةٍ
(the) palm-trees
aw
أَوْ
or
taraktumūhā
تَرَكْتُمُوهَا
you left them
qāimatan
قَآئِمَةً
standing
ʿalā
عَلَىٰٓ
on
uṣūlihā
أُصُولِهَا
their roots
fabi-idh'ni
فَبِإِذْنِ
it (was) by the permission
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
waliyukh'ziya
وَلِيُخْزِىَ
and that He may disgrace
l-fāsiqīna
ٱلْفَٰسِقِينَ
the defiantly disobedient
Whatever you have cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their trunks – it was by permission of Allah and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 5)
Tafsir
6

وَمَآ اَفَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى رَسُوْلِهٖ مِنْهُمْ فَمَآ اَوْجَفْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ خَيْلٍ وَّلَا رِكَابٍ وَّلٰكِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُسَلِّطُ رُسُلَهٗ عَلٰى مَنْ يَّشَاۤءُۗ وَاللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ ٦

وَمَآ
And what
afāa
أَفَآءَ
(was) restored
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
to
rasūlihi
رَسُولِهِۦ
His Messenger
min'hum
مِنْهُمْ
from them
famā
فَمَآ
then not
awjaftum
أَوْجَفْتُمْ
you made expedition
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
for it
min
مِنْ
of
khaylin
خَيْلٍ
horses
walā
وَلَا
and not
rikābin
رِكَابٍ
camels
walākinna
وَلَٰكِنَّ
but
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
yusalliṭu
يُسَلِّطُ
gives power
rusulahu
رُسُلَهُۥ
(to) His Messengers
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
over
man
مَن
whom
yashāu
يَشَآءُۚ
He wills
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
(is) on
kulli
كُلِّ
every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing
qadīrun
قَدِيرٌ
All-Powerful
And what Allah restored [of property] to His Messenger from them – you did not spur for it [in an expedition] any horses or camels, but Allah gives His messengers power over whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 6)
Tafsir
7

مَآ اَفَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى رَسُوْلِهٖ مِنْ اَهْلِ الْقُرٰى فَلِلّٰهِ وَلِلرَّسُوْلِ وَلِذِى الْقُرْبٰى وَالْيَتٰمٰى وَالْمَسٰكِيْنِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيْلِۙ كَيْ لَا يَكُوْنَ دُوْلَةً ۢ بَيْنَ الْاَغْنِيَاۤءِ مِنْكُمْۗ وَمَآ اٰتٰىكُمُ الرَّسُوْلُ فَخُذُوْهُ وَمَا نَهٰىكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوْاۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ ۗاِنَّ اللّٰهَ شَدِيْدُ الْعِقَابِۘ ٧

مَّآ
What
afāa
أَفَآءَ
(was) restored
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
to
rasūlihi
رَسُولِهِۦ
His Messenger
min
مِنْ
from
ahli
أَهْلِ
(the) people
l-qurā
ٱلْقُرَىٰ
(of) the towns
falillahi
فَلِلَّهِ
(it is) for Allah
walilrrasūli
وَلِلرَّسُولِ
and His Messenger
walidhī
وَلِذِى
and for those
l-qur'bā
ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ
(of) the kindred
wal-yatāmā
وَٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ
and the orphans
wal-masākīni
وَٱلْمَسَٰكِينِ
and the needy
wa-ib'ni
وَٱبْنِ
and
l-sabīli
ٱلسَّبِيلِ
the wayfarer
kay
كَىْ
that
لَا
not
yakūna
يَكُونَ
it becomes
dūlatan
دُولَةًۢ
a (perpetual) circulation
bayna
بَيْنَ
between
l-aghniyāi
ٱلْأَغْنِيَآءِ
the rich
minkum
مِنكُمْۚ
among you
wamā
وَمَآ
And whatever
ātākumu
ءَاتَىٰكُمُ
gives you
l-rasūlu
ٱلرَّسُولُ
the Messenger
fakhudhūhu
فَخُذُوهُ
take it
wamā
وَمَا
and whatever
nahākum
نَهَىٰكُمْ
he forbids you
ʿanhu
عَنْهُ
from it
fa-intahū
فَٱنتَهُوا۟ۚ
refrain
wa-ittaqū
وَٱتَّقُوا۟
And fear
l-laha
ٱللَّهَۖ
Allah
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
shadīdu
شَدِيدُ
(is) severe
l-ʿiqābi
ٱلْعِقَابِ
(in) penalty
And what Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns – it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the needy and the [stranded] traveler – so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you – take; and what he has forbidden you – refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 7)
Tafsir
8

لِلْفُقَرَاۤءِ الْمُهٰجِرِيْنَ الَّذِيْنَ اُخْرِجُوْا مِنْ دِيَارِهِمْ وَاَمْوَالِهِمْ يَبْتَغُوْنَ فَضْلًا مِّنَ اللّٰهِ وَرِضْوَانًا وَّيَنْصُرُوْنَ اللّٰهَ وَرَسُوْلَهٗ ۗ اُولٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ الصّٰدِقُوْنَۚ ٨

lil'fuqarāi
لِلْفُقَرَآءِ
For the poor
l-muhājirīna
ٱلْمُهَٰجِرِينَ
emigrants
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ukh'rijū
أُخْرِجُوا۟
were expelled
min
مِن
from
diyārihim
دِيَٰرِهِمْ
their homes
wa-amwālihim
وَأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ
and their properties
yabtaghūna
يَبْتَغُونَ
seeking
faḍlan
فَضْلًا
bounty
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
wariḍ'wānan
وَرِضْوَٰنًا
and pleasure
wayanṣurūna
وَيَنصُرُونَ
and helping
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
warasūlahu
وَرَسُولَهُۥٓۚ
and His Messenger
ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
Those
humu
هُمُ
they
l-ṣādiqūna
ٱلصَّٰدِقُونَ
(are) the truthful
For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting [the cause of] Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 8)
Tafsir
9

وَالَّذِيْنَ تَبَوَّءُو الدَّارَ وَالْاِيْمَانَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ يُحِبُّوْنَ مَنْ هَاجَرَ اِلَيْهِمْ وَلَا يَجِدُوْنَ فِيْ صُدُوْرِهِمْ حَاجَةً مِّمَّآ اُوْتُوْا وَيُؤْثِرُوْنَ عَلٰٓى اَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ ۗوَمَنْ يُّوْقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهٖ فَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُوْنَۚ ٩

wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
tabawwaū
تَبَوَّءُو
settled
l-dāra
ٱلدَّارَ
(in) the home
wal-īmāna
وَٱلْإِيمَٰنَ
and (accepted) faith
min
مِن
from
qablihim
قَبْلِهِمْ
before them
yuḥibbūna
يُحِبُّونَ
love
man
مَنْ
(those) who
hājara
هَاجَرَ
emigrated
ilayhim
إِلَيْهِمْ
to them
walā
وَلَا
and not
yajidūna
يَجِدُونَ
they find
فِى
in
ṣudūrihim
صُدُورِهِمْ
their breasts
ḥājatan
حَاجَةً
any want
mimmā
مِّمَّآ
of what
ūtū
أُوتُوا۟
they were given
wayu'thirūna
وَيُؤْثِرُونَ
but prefer
ʿalā
عَلَىٰٓ
over
anfusihim
أَنفُسِهِمْ
themselves
walaw
وَلَوْ
even though
kāna
كَانَ
was
bihim
بِهِمْ
with them
khaṣāṣatun
خَصَاصَةٌۚ
poverty
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
yūqa
يُوقَ
is saved
shuḥḥa
شُحَّ
(from) stinginess
nafsihi
نَفْسِهِۦ
(of) his soul
fa-ulāika
فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
then those
humu
هُمُ
[they]
l-muf'liḥūna
ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
(are) the successful ones
And [also for] those who were settled in the Home [i.e.,al-Madinah] and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what they [i.e., the emigrants] were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul – it is those who will be the successful. (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 9)
Tafsir
10

وَالَّذِيْنَ جَاۤءُوْ مِنْۢ بَعْدِهِمْ يَقُوْلُوْنَ رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِاِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِيْنَ سَبَقُوْنَا بِالْاِيْمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِيْ قُلُوْبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا رَبَّنَآ اِنَّكَ رَءُوْفٌ رَّحِيْمٌ ࣖ ١٠

wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
jāū
جَآءُو
came
min
مِنۢ
from
baʿdihim
بَعْدِهِمْ
after them
yaqūlūna
يَقُولُونَ
they say
rabbanā
رَبَّنَا
"Our Lord
igh'fir
ٱغْفِرْ
forgive
lanā
لَنَا
us
wali-ikh'wāninā
وَلِإِخْوَٰنِنَا
and our brothers
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
sabaqūnā
سَبَقُونَا
preceded us
bil-īmāni
بِٱلْإِيمَٰنِ
in faith
walā
وَلَا
and (do) not
tajʿal
تَجْعَلْ
put
فِى
in
qulūbinā
قُلُوبِنَا
our hearts
ghillan
غِلًّا
any rancor
lilladhīna
لِّلَّذِينَ
towards those who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
believed
rabbanā
رَبَّنَآ
Our Lord
innaka
إِنَّكَ
indeed You
raūfun
رَءُوفٌ
(are) Full of Kindness
raḥīmun
رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful"
And [there is a share for] those who come after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful." (QS. [59] Al-Hashr: 10)
