Al-Qamar [54]: 31 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

اِنَّآ اَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَّاحِدَةً فَكَانُوْا كَهَشِيْمِ الْمُحْتَظِرِ (القمر : ٥٤)

innā
إِنَّآ
Indeed We
arsalnā
أَرْسَلْنَا
[We] sent
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
upon them
ṣayḥatan
صَيْحَةً
thunderous blast
wāḥidatan
وَٰحِدَةً
single
fakānū
فَكَانُوا۟
and they became
kahashīmi
كَهَشِيمِ
like dry twig fragments
l-muḥ'taẓiri
ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ
(used by) a fence builder

Transliteration:

Innaaa arsalnaa 'alaihim saihatanw waahidatan fakaano kahasheemil muhtazir (QS. al-Q̈amar:31)

English / Sahih Translation:

Indeed, We sent upon them one shriek [i.e., blast from the sky], and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen. (QS. Al-Qamar, ayah 31)

Tafsir jalalayn

Indeed We unleashed upon them a single Cry, and they became like the chaff of a corral builder (al- muhtazir is one who makes a pen from dried tree-branches and thorns for his sheep, to protect them from wolves and beasts of prey; the fallen parts which they tread are called hashm).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Verily, We sent against them a single Sayhah, and they became like straw Al-Muhtazir.

They all perished and none of them remained. They were no more, they died out, just as plants and grass dry and die out.

As-Suddi said that they became like the dry grass in the desert when it becomes burned and the wind scatters it all about.

Ibn Zayd said,

"The Arabs used to erect fences (Hizar, from which the word, Al-Muhtazir, is derived) made of dried bushes, around their camels and cattle, so Allah said,
كَهَشِيمِ الْمُحْتَظِرِ
(like straw Al-Muhtazir.)

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ
