Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Qamar Verse 24

Al-Qamar [54]: 24 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَقَالُوْٓا اَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَاحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهٗٓ ۙاِنَّآ اِذًا لَّفِيْ ضَلٰلٍ وَّسُعُرٍ (القمر : ٥٤)

faqālū
فَقَالُوٓا۟
And said
abasharan
أَبَشَرًا
"Is (it) a human being
minnā
مِّنَّا
among us
wāḥidan
وَٰحِدًا
one
nattabiʿuhu
نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ
(that) we should follow him
innā
إِنَّآ
Indeed we
idhan
إِذًا
then
lafī
لَّفِى
(will be) surely in
ḍalālin
ضَلَٰلٍ
error
wasuʿurin
وَسُعُرٍ
and madness

Transliteration:

Faqaalooo a-basharam minnaa waahidan nattabi'uhooo innaa izal lafee dalaalinw wa su'ur (QS. al-Q̈amar:24)

English / Sahih Translation:

And said, "Is it one human being among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness. (QS. Al-Qamar, ayah 24)

So they said, “Shall we follow a single human being from among us? Then we will be in error and insanity.

For they said; "What! a man! a Solitary one from among ourselves! shall we follow such a one? Truly should we then be straying in mind, and mad!

saying: “Are we to follow a single mortal, one from among ourselves? If we do that, we shall surely be in error and folly.

And said: "Should we follow only one man among us? In that case we shall he in error and insane.

So they said, “What! Shall we follow a man from among us? If we do, we are indeed astray, and insane!”

and they said, ‘Are we to follow a lone human from ourselves?! Indeed then we would be in error and madness.’

They said: "What? A mortal from among us, all alone – shall we follow him? Then indeed we would be lost in a strange error and madness!

And they said, `Shall we follow a man who hails from ourselves and is all alone? (If we do) indeed we, in that case, would be (involved) in a great error and (suffering from) insanity.

English Literal

So they said: "Is a human from (among) us, one, we follow him? We are then in misguidance and madness."

So they said, “What! Shall we follow a man from among us? If we do, we are indeed astray, and insane!”

And they said: "A man, alone among us -- shall we follow him Truly, then we should be in error and distress!"

they said, "Are we to follow a man from amongst ourselves? We would surely then fall into error and madness.

They said, “Are we to follow one of us, a human being? We would then go astray, and end up in Hell.

Tafsir jalalayn

and they said, `Is it a mortal (basharan is in the accusative because it is governed [by a succeeding verb]) alone among us (minn whidan are both adjectives of basharan) that we are to follow? (nattabi`uhu, this explains the verb which renders it [basharan, `mortal'] accusative; the interrogative is meant as a negative, in other words; why should we follow him when there are many of us and he is only one among us and not a king? That is to say, we will not follow him). Then indeed, if we were to follow him, we would be in error, a parting with reason, and insanity!

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

And they said;"A man, alone among us -- shall we follow him Truly, then we should be in error and distress!"

They said, `We would have earned failure and loss if we all submitted to a man from among us.'

They were amazed that the Reminder was sent to him alone among them, and therefore, accused him of being a liar
