Surah Al-Qamar - Word by Word

(The Moon)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

اِقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ ١

iq'tarabati
ٱقْتَرَبَتِ
Has come near
l-sāʿatu
ٱلسَّاعَةُ
the Hour
wa-inshaqqa
وَٱنشَقَّ
and has split
l-qamaru
ٱلْقَمَرُ
the moon
The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two]. (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 1)
Tafsir

وَاِنْ يَّرَوْا اٰيَةً يُّعْرِضُوْا وَيَقُوْلُوْا سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ ٢

wa-in
وَإِن
And if
yaraw
يَرَوْا۟
they see
āyatan
ءَايَةً
a Sign
yuʿ'riḍū
يُعْرِضُوا۟
they turn away
wayaqūlū
وَيَقُولُوا۟
and say
siḥ'run
سِحْرٌ
"Magic
mus'tamirrun
مُّسْتَمِرٌّ
continuing"
And if they see a sign [i.e., miracle], they turn away and say, "Passing magic." (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 2)
Tafsir

وَكَذَّبُوْا وَاتَّبَعُوْٓا اَهْوَاۤءَهُمْ وَكُلُّ اَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ ٣

wakadhabū
وَكَذَّبُوا۟
And they denied
wa-ittabaʿū
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟
and followed
ahwāahum
أَهْوَآءَهُمْۚ
their desires
wakullu
وَكُلُّ
but (for) every
amrin
أَمْرٍ
matter
mus'taqirrun
مُّسْتَقِرٌّ
(will be a) settlement
And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement. (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 3)
Tafsir

وَلَقَدْ جَاۤءَهُمْ مِّنَ الْاَنْبَاۤءِ مَا فِيْهِ مُزْدَجَرٌۙ ٤

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
jāahum
جَآءَهُم
has come to them
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-anbāi
ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ
the information
مَا
wherein
fīhi
فِيهِ
wherein
muz'dajarun
مُزْدَجَرٌ
(is) deterrence
And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence. (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 4)

حِكْمَةٌ ۢ بَالِغَةٌ فَمَا تُغْنِ النُّذُرُۙ ٥

ḥik'matun
حِكْمَةٌۢ
Wisdom
bālighatun
بَٰلِغَةٌۖ
perfect
famā
فَمَا
but not
tugh'ni
تُغْنِ
will avail
l-nudhuru
ٱلنُّذُرُ
the warnings
Extensive wisdom – but warning does not avail [them]. (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 5)
Tafsir

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ الدَّاعِ اِلٰى شَيْءٍ نُّكُرٍۙ ٦

fatawalla
فَتَوَلَّ
So turn away
ʿanhum
عَنْهُمْۘ
from them
yawma
يَوْمَ
(The) Day
yadʿu
يَدْعُ
will call
l-dāʿi
ٱلدَّاعِ
the caller
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
shayin
شَىْءٍ
a thing
nukurin
نُّكُرٍ
terrible
So leave them, [O Muhammad]. The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding, (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 6)

خُشَّعًا اَبْصَارُهُمْ يَخْرُجُوْنَ مِنَ الْاَجْدَاثِ كَاَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنْتَشِرٌۙ ٧

khushaʿan
خُشَّعًا
(Will be) humbled
abṣāruhum
أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ
their eyes
yakhrujūna
يَخْرُجُونَ
they will come forth
mina
مِنَ
from
l-ajdāthi
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ
the graves
ka-annahum
كَأَنَّهُمْ
as if they (were)
jarādun
جَرَادٌ
locusts
muntashirun
مُّنتَشِرٌ
spreading
Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading, (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 7)

مُّهْطِعِيْنَ اِلَى الدَّاعِۗ يَقُوْلُ الْكٰفِرُوْنَ هٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ ٨

muh'ṭiʿīna
مُّهْطِعِينَ
Racing ahead
ilā
إِلَى
toward
l-dāʿi
ٱلدَّاعِۖ
the caller
yaqūlu
يَقُولُ
Will say
l-kāfirūna
ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ
the disbelievers
hādhā
هَٰذَا
"This
yawmun
يَوْمٌ
(is) a Day
ʿasirun
عَسِرٌ
difficult"
Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day." (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 8)

۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوْحٍ فَكَذَّبُوْا عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوْا مَجْنُوْنٌ وَّازْدُجِرَ ٩

kadhabat
كَذَّبَتْ
Denied
qablahum
قَبْلَهُمْ
before them
qawmu
قَوْمُ
(the) people
nūḥin
نُوحٍ
(of) Nuh
fakadhabū
فَكَذَّبُوا۟
and they denied
ʿabdanā
عَبْدَنَا
Our slave
waqālū
وَقَالُوا۟
and said
majnūnun
مَجْنُونٌ
"A madman"
wa-uz'dujira
وَٱزْدُجِرَ
and he was repelled
The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled. (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 9)

فَدَعَا رَبَّهٗٓ اَنِّيْ مَغْلُوْبٌ فَانْتَصِرْ ١٠

fadaʿā
فَدَعَا
So he called
rabbahu
رَبَّهُۥٓ
his Lord
annī
أَنِّى
"I am
maghlūbun
مَغْلُوبٌ
one overpowered
fa-intaṣir
فَٱنتَصِرْ
so help"
So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help." (QS. [54] Al-Qamar: 10)
