Surah An-Najm - Word by Word

(The Star)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

وَالنَّجْمِ اِذَا هَوٰىۙ ١

wal-najmi
وَٱلنَّجْمِ
By the star
idhā
إِذَا
when
hawā
هَوَىٰ
it goes down
By the star when it descends, (QS. [53] An-Najm: 1)
Tafsir
2

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوٰىۚ ٢

مَا
Not
ḍalla
ضَلَّ
has strayed
ṣāḥibukum
صَاحِبُكُمْ
your companion
wamā
وَمَا
and not
ghawā
غَوَىٰ
has he erred
Your companion [i.e., Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, (QS. [53] An-Najm: 2)
Tafsir

وَمَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوٰى ٣

wamā
وَمَا
And not
yanṭiqu
يَنطِقُ
he speaks
ʿani
عَنِ
from
l-hawā
ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ
the desire
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (QS. [53] An-Najm: 3)
Tafsir

اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُّوْحٰىۙ ٤

in
إِنْ
Not
huwa
هُوَ
it
illā
إِلَّا
(is) except
waḥyun
وَحْىٌ
a revelation
yūḥā
يُوحَىٰ
revealed
It is not but a revelation revealed, (QS. [53] An-Najm: 4)
Tafsir

عَلَّمَهٗ شَدِيْدُ الْقُوٰىۙ ٥

ʿallamahu
عَلَّمَهُۥ
Has taught him
shadīdu
شَدِيدُ
the (one) mighty
l-quwā
ٱلْقُوَىٰ
(in) power
Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] – (QS. [53] An-Najm: 5)
Tafsir

ذُوْ مِرَّةٍۗ فَاسْتَوٰىۙ ٦

dhū
ذُو
Possessor of soundness
mirratin
مِرَّةٍ
Possessor of soundness
fa-is'tawā
فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
And he rose
One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form (QS. [53] An-Najm: 6)
Tafsir
7

وَهُوَ بِالْاُفُقِ الْاَعْلٰىۗ ٧

wahuwa
وَهُوَ
While he
bil-ufuqi
بِٱلْأُفُقِ
(was) in the horizon -
l-aʿlā
ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
the highest
While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. (QS. [53] An-Najm: 7)

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلّٰىۙ ٨

thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
danā
دَنَا
he approached
fatadallā
فَتَدَلَّىٰ
and came down
Then he approached and descended (QS. [53] An-Najm: 8)
Tafsir
9

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ اَوْ اَدْنٰىۚ ٩

fakāna
فَكَانَ
And was
qāba
قَابَ
(at) a distance
qawsayni
قَوْسَيْنِ
(of) two bow-(lengths)
aw
أَوْ
or
adnā
أَدْنَىٰ
nearer
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. (QS. [53] An-Najm: 9)
Tafsir

فَاَوْحٰىٓ اِلٰى عَبْدِهٖ مَآ اَوْحٰىۗ ١٠

fa-awḥā
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ
So he revealed
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
ʿabdihi
عَبْدِهِۦ
His slave
مَآ
what
awḥā
أَوْحَىٰ
he revealed
And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed [i.e., conveyed]. (QS. [53] An-Najm: 10)
