Al-Qur'an Surah Adh-Dhariyat Verse 39

Adh-Dhariyat [51]: 39 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَتَوَلّٰى بِرُكْنِهٖ وَقَالَ سٰحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُوْنٌ (الذاريات : ٥١)

fatawallā
فَتَوَلَّىٰ
But he turned away
biruk'nihi
بِرُكْنِهِۦ
with his supporters
waqāla
وَقَالَ
and said
sāḥirun
سَٰحِرٌ
"A magician
aw
أَوْ
or
majnūnun
مَجْنُونٌ
a madman"

Transliteration:

Fatawalla biruknihee wa qaala saahirun aw majnoon (QS. aḏ-Ḏāriyāt:39)

English / Sahih Translation:

But he turned away with his supporters and said, "A magician or a madman." (QS. Adh-Dhariyat, ayah 39)

So he turned away along with his chiefs and said, “ (Mūsā is) a magician or a madman!”

Tafsir jalalayn

but he turned away, he rejected belief, to his supports (bi-ruknihi), his hosts, [so called] because to him they are like a support [rukn], saying, to Moses that he [Moses] was; `A sorcerer, or a madman!'

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

فَتَوَلَّى بِرُكْنِهِ

But he turned away along with his hosts,

meaning, in rebellion and arrogance, Fir`awn turned away from the plain truth that Musa was sent with,

ثَانِىَ عِطْفِهِ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

Bending his neck in pride, and leading (others) too (far) astray from the path of Allah. (22;9 ),

meaning turning away from truth in arrogance,

وَقَالَ سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ



and said;"A sorcerer, or a madman."

meaning Fir`awn said to Musa, "With regards to the message that you brought me, you are either a magician or a madman."

Allah the Exalted replied
