Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Ma'idah Verse 81
Al-Ma'idah [5]: 81 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
وَلَوْ كَانُوْا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالنَّبِيِّ وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْهِ مَا اتَّخَذُوْهُمْ اَوْلِيَاۤءَ وَلٰكِنَّ كَثِيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ فٰسِقُوْنَ (المائدة : ٥)

- وَلَوْ
- And if
- kānū
- كَانُوا۟
- they had
- yu'minūna
- يُؤْمِنُونَ
- believed
- bil-lahi
- بِٱللَّهِ
- in Allah
- wal-nabiyi
- وَٱلنَّبِىِّ
- and the Prophet
- wamā
- وَمَآ
- and what
- unzila
- أُنزِلَ
- has been revealed
- ilayhi
- إِلَيْهِ
- to him
- mā
- مَا
- not
- ittakhadhūhum
- ٱتَّخَذُوهُمْ
- they (would have) taken them
- awliyāa
- أَوْلِيَآءَ
- (as) allies;
- walākinna
- وَلَٰكِنَّ
- [and] but
- kathīran
- كَثِيرًا
- many
- min'hum
- مِّنْهُمْ
- of them
- fāsiqūna
- فَٰسِقُونَ
- (are) defiantly disobedient
Transliteration:
Wa law kaanoo yu'minoona billaahi wan nabiyyi wa maaa unzila ilaihi attakhazoohum awliyaaa'a wa laakinna kaseeram minhum faasiqoon(QS. al-Māʾidah:81)
English / Sahih Translation:
And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient. (QS. Al-Ma'idah, ayah 81)

If they believed in Allah, in the prophet, and in what had been sent down to him, they would have not taken them (the pagans) for friends, but many of them are sinners.

Tafsir jalalayn
Yet had they believed in God and the Prophet, Muhammad (s), and what has been revealed to him, they would not have affiliated with them, namely, [with] the disbelievers; but many of them are wicked, rebellious against faith.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
وَلَوْ كَانُوا يُوْمِنُونَ بِالله والنَّبِيِّ وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مَا اتَّخَذُوهُمْ أَوْلِيَاء
And had they believed in Allah, and in the Prophet and in what has been revealed to him, never would they have taken them as friends.
meaning, had they sincerely believed in Allah, His Messenger and the Qur'an, they would not have committed the evil act of supporting the disbelievers in secret and being enemies with those who believe in Allah, the Prophet and what was revealed to him,
وَلَـكِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنْهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ
but many of them are rebellious.
disobedient to Allah and His Messenger and defiant of the Ayat of His revelation that He sent down
