Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Ma'idah Verse 71
Al-Ma'idah [5]: 71 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
وَحَسِبُوْٓا اَلَّا تَكُوْنَ فِتْنَةٌ فَعَمُوْا وَصَمُّوْا ثُمَّ تَابَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ عَمُوْا وَصَمُّوْا كَثِيْرٌ مِّنْهُمْۗ وَاللّٰهُ بَصِيْرٌۢ بِمَا يَعْمَلُوْنَ (المائدة : ٥)

- وَحَسِبُوٓا۟
- And they thought

- فِتْنَةٌ
- a trial

- فَعَمُوا۟
- so they became blind

- وَصَمُّوا۟
- and they became deaf

- And Allah

- بَصِيرٌۢ
- (is) All-Seer

- بِمَا

- yaʿmalūna
- يَعْمَلُونَ
- they do
Transliteration:
Wa hasibooo allaa takoona fitnaun fa'amoo wa sammoo summa taabal laahu 'alaihim summa 'amoo wa sammoo kaseerum minhum; wallaahu baseerum bimaa ya'maloon(QS. al-Māʾidah:71)
English / Sahih Translation:
And they thought there would be no [resulting] punishment, so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness; then [again] many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah is Seeing of what they do. (QS. Al-Ma'idah, ayah 71)
Mufti Taqi Usmani
They thought that no harm would follow. Therefore, they became blind and deaf. Then, Allah accepted their repentance, but again they turned blind and deaf, many of them. Allah is watchful of what they do.

They thought there would be no consequences, so they turned a blind eye and a deaf ear. Yet Allah turned to them in forgiveness ˹after their repentance˺, but again many became blind and deaf. And Allah is All-Seeing of what they do.

They supposed there would be no testing, so they became blind and deaf. Thereafter Allah accepted their repentance, yet [again] many of them became blind and deaf, and Allah watches what they do.

They calculated that there would be no trial (of them as a result of what they did), and so became as if blind and deaf (to truth and all Divine admonitions). Then God (having guided them to waken their consciences, and turn to Him in repentance so that they could reform themselves) relented towards them (in gracious forgiveness). Then (again, in spite of that) many of them became as if blind and deaf. And God sees well all that they do.

And they thought there would be no punishment (for them) so they willfully became blind and deaf; (then they sought Allâh´s pardon) then Allâh turned to them (with mercy with the advent of Jesus), yet again many of them became blind and deaf. And Allâh is Watchful of what they do.
English Literal
And they thought, that test/torture (is) not (to) be, so they became blinded/confused , and they became deaf, then God forgave on them, then they blinded/confused and they deafened many (of) them, and God (is) seeing/knowing/understanding with what they make/do/work.

They surely disbelieve who say, "Verily, Allah is the Messiah the son of Mary;" but the Messiah himself said, "O children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." (JohnVerily, he who associates anything with Allah, Allah hath forbidden him Paradise, and his resort is the Fire, and the unjust shall have none to help them.

Tafsir jalalayn
And they thought, they presumed that, there would be no (read as an l taknu, where an has been softened; or read an l takna, where it [an] requires a [following] subjunctive, that is to say, `that there would [not] befall [them]') trial, a punishment against them, for their denial of the messengers and their slaying of them; and so they were wilfully blind, to the truth and could not see it, and deaf, [unable] to hear it. Then God relented to them, when they repented, then they were wilfully blind and deaf, a second time, many of them (kathrun minhum substitutes for the [third] person [`they']); and God sees what they do, and will requite them for it.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
وَحَسِبُواْ أَلاَّ تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ فَعَمُواْ وَصَمُّواْ
Whenever there came to them a Messenger with what they themselves desired not - a group of them they called liars, and others among them they killed. They thought there will be no Fitnah (trial or punishment) so they became blind and deaf.
thinking that they would suffer no repercussions for of the evil that they committed. Consequently, they were blinded from the truth and became deaf, incapable of hearing the truth. For these reasons they were unable to be guided by it.

ثُمَّ تَابَ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ عَمُواْ وَصَمُّواْ
after that Allah turned to them (with forgiveness); yet again many of them became blind and deaf.
Allah forgave that, then,
ثُمَّ عَمُواْ وَصَمُّواْ
(yet they became blind and deaf) again,
كَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ وَاللّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ
many of them, and Allah is the All-Seer of what they do.
He has perfect knowledge of what they do and whomever among them deserves the guidance and whomever deserves misguidance
