Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Ma'idah Verse 53

Al-Ma'idah [5]: 53 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَيَقُوْلُ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْٓا اَهٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ الَّذِيْنَ اَقْسَمُوْا بِاللّٰهِ جَهْدَ اَيْمَانِهِمْۙ اِنَّهُمْ لَمَعَكُمْۗ حَبِطَتْ اَعْمَالُهُمْ فَاَصْبَحُوْا خٰسِرِيْنَ (المائدة : ٥)

wayaqūlu
وَيَقُولُ
And will say
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوٓا۟
believe
ahāulāi
أَهَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
"Are these
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
aqsamū
أَقْسَمُوا۟
swore
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
by Allah
jahda
جَهْدَ
strongest
aymānihim
أَيْمَٰنِهِمْۙ
(of) their oaths
innahum
إِنَّهُمْ
indeed they
lamaʿakum
لَمَعَكُمْۚ
(were) with you?"
ḥabiṭat
حَبِطَتْ
Became worthless
aʿmāluhum
أَعْمَٰلُهُمْ
their deeds
fa-aṣbaḥū
فَأَصْبَحُوا۟
and they became
khāsirīna
خَٰسِرِينَ
(the) losers

Transliteration:

Wa yaqoolul lazeena aamanooo ahaaa'ulaaa'il lazeena aqsamoo billaahi jahda aimaanihim innahum lama'akum; habitat a'maaluhum fa asbahoo khaasireen (QS. al-Māʾidah:53)

English / Sahih Translation:

And those who believe will say, "Are these the ones who swore by Allah their strongest oaths that indeed they were with you?" Their deeds have become worthless, and they have become losers. (QS. Al-Ma'idah, ayah 53)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Those who believe will say, “Are these the ones who swore their solemn oaths by Allah that they were with you?” Their deeds have gone to waste, and they became losers.

˹Only then,˺ the believers will ask ˹one another˺, “Are these the ones who swore solemn oaths by Allah that they were with you?” Their deeds have been in vain, so they have become losers.

And those who believe say, “Are these the people who swore their solemn oaths by Allah that they were with you?” Their deeds have become worthless, and they have become losers.

and the believers will say, ‘Are these the men who swore by God using their strongest oaths that they were with you?’ All they did was in vain: they have lost everything.

And those who believe will say: are those they who swear by Allah say their solemn oaths that they were verily with you? Their works came to naught, and they found themselves losers.

And those who believe will say; "Are these the men who swore their strongest oaths by Allah, that they were with you?" All that they do will be in vain, and they will fall into (nothing but) ruin.

Abul Ala Maududi

while those who believe will exclaim: 'Are these the self-same people who solemnly swore by Allah that they were with you?' All their acts have gone to waste and now they are the losers.

Then the believers will say: "Are these the people who had sworn by God on solemn oath and said: "We are surely with you?" Wasted have been all their deeds, and losers they remain.

And the believers say, “Are these the ones who swore by Allah most vehemently in their oaths, that they are with you?” All their deeds are destroyed, so they are ruined.

and the faithful will say, ‘Are these the ones who swore by Allah with solemn oaths that they were with you?!’ Their works have failed, and they have become losers.

And those who believe will say (to each other): "Are those the self-same people who swore by God their most solemn oaths that they were indeed with you?" Their works have gone to waste and they have become losers.

Amatul Rahman Omar

And those who have believed will say (at that time), `Are these they who swore by Allâh their most solemn oaths that they were surely with you?´ Their deeds have gone waste (and their machination failed), so that they have become the losers.

English Literal

And those who believed, say: "Are those, those who swore by God their right`s/oath`s utmost that they (are) with you (E), their deeds wasted, so they became losers .

Faridul Haque

And the believers say, “Are these the ones who swore by Allah most vehemently in their oaths, that they are with you?” All their deeds are destroyed, so they are ruined.

Hamid S. Aziz

O you who believe! Whoever of you turns away from his religion, Allah will bring (instead) a people whom He loves and who love Him, humble to believers, stern to unbelievers, striving in the way of Allah, fearing not the blame (or reproach) of any blamer (or critic). That is Allah´s Grace! He gives it unto whom He pleases, for Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing.

And those who believe will say: "Are these the men (hypocrites) who swore their strongest oaths by Allah that they were with you (Muslims)?" All that they did has been in vain (because of their hypocrisy), and they have become the losers.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

But thou seest those in whose hearts is a disease, hastening towards them, saying: We fear lest a calamity should befall us. Maybe Allah will bring the victory or a commandment from Himself, so they will regret what they hid in their souls.

And those who believe will say: Are these they who swore by Allah with the most forcible of their oaths that they were most surely with you? Their deeds shall go for nothing, so they shall become losers.

Then will the believers say (unto the people of the Scripture): are these they who swore by Allah their most binding oaths that they were surely with you? Their works have failed, and they have become the losers.

The believers say, "Are these the people who proclaimed themselves to be our sworn friends?" Their deeds have become devoid of all virtue and they themselves have become lost.

Then the believers will say: 'Are those (the ones) who solemnly swore by Allah that they would stand by you' Their works will be annulled and they shall be the losers.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

And those who believe will say: "Are these the men who swore their strongest oaths by Allah that they were with you" All that they did has been in vain, and they have become the losers.

Wahiduddin Khan

Then the believers will say, "Are these the men who swore their strongest oaths by God, that they were with you?" Their works will come to nothing and they will lose all.

Talal Itani

Those who believe will say, “Are these the ones who swore by God with their strongest oaths that they are with you?” Their works have failed, so they became losers.

Tafsir jalalayn

And they say (read wa-yaqlu, or just yaqlu, to indicate a new [independent] sentence; or wa-yaqla as a supplement to what follows), those who believe, to one another in amazement, when their secrets are revealed; `Are these the ones who swore by God their most earnest oaths, making the utmost effort thereby [to swear], that they were surely with you?, in religion. God, exalted be He, says; Their, good, works have failed, are invalid; and they have become, they have ended up as, the losers', in this world, through ignominy, and in the Hereafter, through their punishment.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

And those who believe will say, "Are these the men who swore their strongest oaths by Allah that they were with you!" All that they did has been in vain, and they have become the losers.
