Yet how will they appoint you a judge when they have the Torah with them, wherein there is Allah's judgement - and still they turn away from it? The fact is, they are not believers.

Ahmed Ali

But why should they make you a judge when the Torah is with them which contains the Law of God? Even then they turn away. They are those who will never believe.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And why should they wish to be judged by you, when they have the Taurat with them, in which exist the commands of Allah and yet they turn away from it? And they will not accept faith.

Ali Quli Qarai

And how should they make you a judge, while with them is the Torah, in which is Allah’s judgement? Yet in spite of that, they turn their backs [on Him] and they are not believers.

Ali Ünal

But how is it that they ask you for judgment when they have the Torah, in which there is God’s judgment (concerning murder), and still thereafter turn away (from that and from your judgment)? The fact is: those are not believers.

Amatul Rahman Omar

And how should they appoint you their judge whilst they have with them the Torah which contains the law (and judgment) of Allâh. Yet they turn their backs even after that (you judge between them). And such people are not true believers (neither in the Qur´ân nor in the Torah).

English Literal

And how (do) they ask you to judge/rule, and at them (is) the Torah/Old Testament, in it (is) God`s judgment/rule, then they turn away from after that, and those are not with the believing.

Faridul Haque

And why should they wish to be judged by you, when they have the Taurat with them, in which exist the commands of Allah and yet they turn away from it? And they will not accept faith.

Hamid S. Aziz

Verily, it was We who have revealed the Torah in which there is guidance and light; the prophets who had surrendered did judge the Jews thereby, as did the Rabbis (masters) and doctors of Law. To them was entrusted the Book of Allah to judge by, and they were witnesses to it. Fear not men, but fear Me, and sell not My Signs (or revelations) for a miserable price. Whoever will not judge by what Allah has revealed, these are the disbelievers.

Hilali & Khan

But how do they come to you for decision while they have the Taurat (Torah), in which is the (plain) Decision of Allah; yet even after that, they turn away. For they are not (really) believers.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

Listeners for the sake of a lie, devourers of forbidden things, so if they come to thee, judge between them or turn away from them. And if thou turn away from them, they cannot harm thee at all. And if thou judge, judge between them with equity. Surely Allah loves the equitable.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

And how do they make you a judge and they have the Taurat wherein is Allah's judgment? Yet they turn back after that, and these are not the believers.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

How come they unto thee for judgment when they have the Torah, wherein Allah hath delivered judgment (for them)? Yet even after that they turn away. Such (folk) are not believers.

Muhammad Sarwar

But why do they come to you for judgment, when they have the Torah, in which is God’s Law? Yet they turn away after that. These are not believers.

Tafsir jalalayn

But how is it that they make you their judge when they have the Torah, wherein is God's judgement, of stoning; the interrogative here is for [provoking] amazement, in other words, they were not seeking thereby [by making you their judge] to discover the truth but a lighter punishment for them; and then they turn away, [and then] they reject your ruling of stoning, which accords with what is in their Scripture, after that, request [to you] for arbitration? Such are not believers.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir
