Al-Ma'idah [5]: 22 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالُوْا يٰمُوْسٰٓى اِنَّ فِيْهَا قَوْمًا جَبَّارِيْنَۖ وَاِنَّا لَنْ نَّدْخُلَهَا حَتّٰى يَخْرُجُوْا مِنْهَاۚ فَاِنْ يَّخْرُجُوْا مِنْهَا فَاِنَّا دٰخِلُوْنَ (المائدة : ٥)

قَالُوا۟
They said
yāmūsā
يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ
"O Musa!
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
fīhā
فِيهَا
in it
qawman
قَوْمًا
(are) people
jabbārīna
جَبَّارِينَ
(of) tyrannical strength
wa-innā
وَإِنَّا
and indeed we
lan
لَن
never
nadkhulahā
نَّدْخُلَهَا
will enter it
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰ
until
yakhrujū
يَخْرُجُوا۟
they leave
min'hā
مِنْهَا
from it
fa-in
فَإِن
and if
yakhrujū
يَخْرُجُوا۟
they leave
min'hā
مِنْهَا
[from] it
fa-innā
فَإِنَّا
then certainly we (will)
dākhilūna
دَٰخِلُونَ
enter (it)"

Transliteration:

Qaaloo yaa Moosaaa innaa feehaa qwman jabbaareena wa innaa lan nadkhulahaa hattaa yakhrujoo minhaa fa innaa daakhiloon (QS. al-Māʾidah:22)

English / Sahih Translation:

They said, "O Moses, indeed within it is a people of tyrannical strength, and indeed, we will never enter it until they leave it; but if they leave it, then we will enter." (QS. Al-Ma'idah, ayah 22)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

They said, “O Mūsā, there is a nation of tyrants over there, and we shall never enter it until they get out of it. If they do get out of it, we are ready to go in.”

They replied, “O Moses! There is an enormously powerful people there, so we will never ˹be able to˺ enter it until they leave. If they do, then we will enter!”

They said, “O Moses, there is an extremely mighty people in this land; we will never enter it until they leave it. Then if they leave, only then we will enter.”

They answered: 'Moses, therein live a ferocious people: we will not enter unless they depart from it; but if they do depart from it then we will surely enter it.'

They said: "O Moses, in that land live a people who are formidable; we shall never go there until they leave. We shall enter when they go away."

They said, “O Moosa! In it lives a very strong nation – and we shall never enter it, until they have gone away from there; so when they have gone away from there, we will enter it.”

They said, ‘O Moses, there are a tyrannical people in it. We will not enter it until they leave it. But once they leave it, we will go in.’

They said: "Moses, therein live a people of exceeding strength: we cannot enter it unless they depart from it; so if they depart from it, then we will surely enter it."

They said, `O Moses! surely there are in that (land) arrogant and exceedingly powerful people and we shall never enter it until they depart from it, but if they depart from it, then we will certainly enter (it).´

English Literal

They said: "You Moses, that in it (is) a nation (of) tyrants/rebels , and that we will never/not enter it until they get out from it, so if they get out from it, so we are entering."

Faridul Haque

They said, “O Moosa! In it lives a very strong nation - and we shall never enter it, until they have gone away from there; so when they have gone away from there, we will enter it.”

Then said two of those who were God-fearing - Allah had been gracious to them both - "Enter you upon them by the gate, for once you have entered it, verily, you shall be victorious; so put your trust in Allah if you be, indeed, believers."

They said: "O Musa (Moses)! In it (this holy land) are a people of great strength, and we shall never enter it, till they leave it; when they leave, then we will enter."

O my people, enter the Holy Land which Allah has ordained for you and turn not your backs, for then you will turn back losers.

They said: "O Musa! In it are a people of great strength, and we shall never enter it, till they leave it; when they leave, then we will enter."

They said, "Moses, in that land there is a powerful people. Never shall we enter it until they leave it: if they leave, then we shall certainly enter it."

They said, “O Moses, there are tyrannical people in it; we will not enter it until they leave it. If they leave it, we will be entering.”

Tafsir jalalayn

They said, `O Moses, there are giants in it, those remaining of the people of `d, who were very tall and mighty; we will never enter it until they depart from it; if they depart from it then we will enter', it.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

". ..for then you will be returned as losers."

They said, "O Musa! In it are a people of great strength, and we shall never enter it, till they leave it; when they leave, then we will enter."

Their excuse was this, in this very town you commanded us to enter and fight its people, there is a mighty, strong, vicious people who have tremendous physique and physical ability. We are unable to stand against these people or fight them. Therefore, they said, we are incapable of entering this city as long as they are still in it, but if they leave it, we will enter it. Otherwise, we cannot stand against them.
