Al-Ma'idah [5]: 104 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاِذَا قِيْلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا اِلٰى مَآ اَنْزَلَ اللّٰهُ وَاِلَى الرَّسُوْلِ قَالُوْا حَسْبُنَا مَا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ اٰبَاۤءَنَا ۗ اَوَلَوْ كَانَ اٰبَاۤؤُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ شَيْـًٔا وَّلَا يَهْتَدُوْنَ (المائدة : ٥)

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when

our forefathers"

Even though

كَانَ

their forefathers

يَعْلَمُونَ
knowing

شَيْـًٔا

walā

يَهْتَدُونَ
they (were) guided?

Transliteration:

Wa izaa qeela lahum ta'aalaw ilaa maaa anzalallaahu wa ilar Rasooli qaaloo hasbunaa maa wajadnaa 'alaihi aabaaa'anaa; awa law kaana aabaaa'uhum laa ya'lamoona shai'anw wa laa yahtadoon (QS. al-Māʾidah:104)

English / Sahih Translation:

And when it is said to them, "Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger," they say, "Sufficient for us is that upon which we found our fathers." Even though their fathers knew nothing, nor were they guided? (QS. Al-Ma'idah, ayah 104)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

When it is said to them, “Come to what Allah has sent down, and to the Messenger;” they say, “Sufficient for us is that on which we have found our forefathers.” Is it so, even though their forefathers knew nothing, and had no guidance either?

When it is said to them, “Come to Allah’s revelations and to the Messenger,” they reply, “What we found our forefathers practicing is good enough for us.” ˹Would they still do so,˺ even if their forefathers had absolutely no knowledge or guidance?

When it is said to them; "Come to what Allah hath revealed; come to the Messenger"; They say; "Enough for us are the ways we found our fathers following." what! even though their fathers were void of knowledge and guidance?

When they are asked: 'Come to what Allah has revealed, and come to the Messenger', they reply: 'The way of our refathers suffices us.' (Will they continue to follow their forefathers) even though their forefathers might have known nothing, and might have been on the wrong way?

When you say to them: "Come to what God has revealed, and the Prophet," they say: "Sufficient to us is the faith that our fathers had followed," even though their fathers had no knowledge or guidance.

And when it is said to them, “Come towards what Allah has sent down and towards the Noble Messenger”, they say, “Sufficient for us is what we found our forefathers upon”; even if their forefathers did not have knowledge nor had guidance?

When it is said to them, "Come (in obedience) to what God has sent down and to the Messenger (to whom the Qur’an is being revealed), they (refuse to think, and instead) say: "Enough for us (are the ways) that we found our forefathers on." What, even if their forefathers knew nothing and were not guided (and so did not follow a right way)?

And when it is said to them, `Come to what Allâh has revealed and to this perfect Messenger.´ They say, `Sufficient for us is that (tradition) whereon we have found our forefathers.´ What! (would they follow them blindly) even though their forefathers had no knowledge whatsoever and had no guidance?

English Literal

And if (it) was said to them: "Come to what God descended and to the messenger." They said: "Enough for us what we found our fathers on it." And even if their fathers were not knowing a thing and nor being guided.

And when it is said to them, “Come towards what Allah has sent down and towards the Noble Messenger”, they say, “Sufficient for us is what we found our forefathers upon”; even if their forefathers did not have knowledge nor had guidance?

O you who believe! You have charge of (or guardianship of) your own souls; he who errs can do you no hurt if you are rightly guided. Unto Allah will you all return, and He will declare to you the truth of that which you did.

And when it is said to them: "Come to what Allah has revealed and unto the Messenger (Muhammad SAW for the verdict of that which you have made unlawful)." They say: "Enough for us is that which we found our fathers following," even though their fathers had no knowledge whatsoever and no guidance.

Allah has not ordained a bahirah or a sa’ibah or a wasilah or a hami, but those who disbelieve fabricate a lie against Allah. And most of them understand not.

When it is said to them: 'Come to that which Allah has sent down, and to the Messenger' they reply: 'Sufficient for us is what we have found our fathers upon' even though their fathers knew nothing and were not guided.

And when it is said to them: "Come to what Allah has revealed and unto the Messenger." They say: "Enough for us is that which we found our fathers following," even though their fathers had no knowledge whatsoever and no guidance.

when it is said to them, "Come to what God has sent down and to the Messenger." They reply, "The faith we have inherited from our fathers is sufficient for us." Even though their forefathers knew nothing and were not guided!

And when it is said to them, “Come to what God has revealed, and to the Messenger,” they say, “Sufficient for us is what we found our forefathers upon.” Even if their forefathers knew nothing, and were not guided?

Tafsir jalalayn

And when it is said to them, `Come to what God has revealed and to the Messenger', that is, to His ruling concerning the permitting of what you have forbidden, they say, `What we have found our fathers following suffices us', in the way of religion and laws. God, exalted be He, says; What, does that suffice them, even if their fathers knew nothing and were not guided?, to any truth (the interrogative is meant as a disavowal).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْاْ إِلَى مَا أَنزَلَ اللّهُ وَإِلَى الرَّسُولِ قَالُواْ حَسْبُنَا مَا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ ابَاءنَا

And when it is said to them;"Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger." They say;"Enough for us is that which we found our fathers following,"

meaning, if they are called to Allah's religion, Law and commandments and to avoiding what He prohibited, they say, `The ways and practices that we found our fathers and forefathers following are good enough for us. `

Allah said,

أَوَلَوْ كَانَ ابَاوُهُمْ لاأَ يَعْلَمُونَ شَيْيًا وَلاأَ يَهْتَدُونَ



even though their fathers had no knowledge whatsoever and no guidance.

That is, even though their fathers did not understand or recognize the truth or find its way. Therefore, who would follow their forefathers, except those who are even more ignorant and misguided than they wer
