(The Table Spread)

111

وَاِذْ اَوْحَيْتُ اِلَى الْحَوَارِيّٖنَ اَنْ اٰمِنُوْا بِيْ وَبِرَسُوْلِيْ ۚ قَالُوْٓا اٰمَنَّا وَاشْهَدْ بِاَنَّنَا مُسْلِمُوْنَ ١١١

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
awḥaytu
أَوْحَيْتُ
I inspired
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-ḥawāriyīna
ٱلْحَوَارِيِّۦنَ
the disciples
an
أَنْ
to
āminū
ءَامِنُوا۟
believe
بِى
in Me
wabirasūlī
وَبِرَسُولِى
and in My Messenger
qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
they said
āmannā
ءَامَنَّا
"We believe
wa-ish'had
وَٱشْهَدْ
and bear witness
bi-annanā
بِأَنَّنَا
that indeed we
mus'limūna
مُسْلِمُونَ
(are) Muslims
And [remember] when I inspired to the disciples, "Believe in Me and in My messenger [i.e., Jesus]." They said, "We have believed, so bear witness that indeed we are Muslims [in submission to Allah]." (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 111)
Tafsir
112

اِذْ قَالَ الْحَوَارِيُّوْنَ يٰعِيْسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ هَلْ يَسْتَطِيْعُ رَبُّكَ اَنْ يُّنَزِّلَ عَلَيْنَا مَاۤىِٕدَةً مِّنَ السَّمَاۤءِ ۗقَالَ اتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُّؤْمِنِيْنَ ١١٢

إِذْ
When
qāla
قَالَ
said
l-ḥawāriyūna
ٱلْحَوَارِيُّونَ
the disciples
yāʿīsā
يَٰعِيسَى
"O Isa
ib'na
ٱبْنَ
son
maryama
مَرْيَمَ
(of) Maryam!
hal
هَلْ
Is
yastaṭīʿu
يَسْتَطِيعُ
able
rabbuka
رَبُّكَ
your Lord
an
أَن
to
yunazzila
يُنَزِّلَ
send down
ʿalaynā
عَلَيْنَا
to us
māidatan
مَآئِدَةً
a table spread
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-samāi
ٱلسَّمَآءِۖ
the heaven?"
qāla
قَالَ
He said
ittaqū
ٱتَّقُوا۟
"Fear
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
in
إِن
if
kuntum
كُنتُم
you are
mu'minīna
مُّؤْمِنِينَ
believers"
[And remember] when the disciples said, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven?" [Jesus] said, "Fear Allah, if you should be believers." (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 112)
Tafsir
113

قَالُوْا نُرِيْدُ اَنْ نَّأْكُلَ مِنْهَا وَتَطْمَىِٕنَّ قُلُوْبُنَا وَنَعْلَمَ اَنْ قَدْ صَدَقْتَنَا وَنَكُوْنَ عَلَيْهَا مِنَ الشّٰهِدِيْنَ ١١٣

qālū
قَالُوا۟
They said
nurīdu
نُرِيدُ
"We wish
an
أَن
that
nakula
نَّأْكُلَ
we eat
min'hā
مِنْهَا
from it
wataṭma-inna
وَتَطْمَئِنَّ
and satisfy
qulūbunā
قُلُوبُنَا
our hearts
wanaʿlama
وَنَعْلَمَ
and we know
an
أَن
that
qad
قَدْ
certainly
ṣadaqtanā
صَدَقْتَنَا
you have spoken the truth to us
wanakūna
وَنَكُونَ
and we be
ʿalayhā
عَلَيْهَا
over it
mina
مِنَ
among
l-shāhidīna
ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَ
the witnesses
They said, "We wish to eat from it and let our hearts be reassured and know that you have been truthful to us and be among its witnesses." (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 113)
Tafsir
114

قَالَ عِيْسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ اللهم رَبَّنَآ اَنْزِلْ عَلَيْنَا مَاۤىِٕدَةً مِّنَ السَّمَاۤءِ تَكُوْنُ لَنَا عِيْدًا لِّاَوَّلِنَا وَاٰخِرِنَا وَاٰيَةً مِّنْكَ وَارْزُقْنَا وَاَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرّٰزِقِيْنَ ١١٤

قَالَ
Said
ʿīsā
عِيسَى
Isa
ub'nu
ٱبْنُ
son
maryama
مَرْيَمَ
(of) Maryam
l-lahuma
ٱللَّهُمَّ
"O Allah
rabbanā
رَبَّنَآ
our Lord
anzil
أَنزِلْ
send down
ʿalaynā
عَلَيْنَا
to us
māidatan
مَآئِدَةً
a table spread
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-samāi
ٱلسَّمَآءِ
the heaven
takūnu
تَكُونُ
to be
lanā
لَنَا
for us
ʿīdan
عِيدًا
a festival
li-awwalinā
لِّأَوَّلِنَا
for first of us
waākhirinā
وَءَاخِرِنَا
and last of us
waāyatan
وَءَايَةً
and a sign
minka
مِّنكَۖ
from You
wa-ur'zuq'nā
وَٱرْزُقْنَا
And provide us
wa-anta
وَأَنتَ
and You
khayru
خَيْرُ
(are) best
l-rāziqīna
ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ
(of) the providers
Said Jesus, the son of Mary, "O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers." (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 114)
Tafsir
115

قَالَ اللّٰهُ اِنِّيْ مُنَزِّلُهَا عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ فَمَنْ يَّكْفُرْ بَعْدُ مِنْكُمْ فَاِنِّيْٓ اُعَذِّبُهٗ عَذَابًا لَّآ اُعَذِّبُهٗٓ اَحَدًا مِّنَ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ ࣖ ١١٥

qāla
قَالَ
Said
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
innī
إِنِّى
"Indeed I
munazziluhā
مُنَزِّلُهَا
(will) send it down
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْۖ
to you
faman
فَمَن
then whoever
yakfur
يَكْفُرْ
disbelieves
baʿdu
بَعْدُ
after (that)
minkum
مِنكُمْ
among you
fa-innī
فَإِنِّىٓ
then indeed I
uʿadhibuhu
أُعَذِّبُهُۥ
[I] will punish him
ʿadhāban
عَذَابًا
(with) a punishment
لَّآ
not
uʿadhibuhu
أُعَذِّبُهُۥٓ
I have punished
aḥadan
أَحَدًا
anyone
mina
مِّنَ
among
l-ʿālamīna
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
the worlds"
Allah said, "Indeed, I will send it down to you, but whoever disbelieves afterwards from among you – then indeed will I punish him with a punishment by which I have not punished anyone among the worlds." (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 115)
Tafsir
116

وَاِذْ قَالَ اللّٰهُ يٰعِيْسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ ءَاَنْتَ قُلْتَ لِلنَّاسِ اتَّخِذُوْنِيْ وَاُمِّيَ اِلٰهَيْنِ مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ ۗقَالَ سُبْحٰنَكَ مَا يَكُوْنُ لِيْٓ اَنْ اَقُوْلَ مَا لَيْسَ لِيْ بِحَقٍّ ۗاِنْ كُنْتُ قُلْتُهٗ فَقَدْ عَلِمْتَهٗ ۗتَعْلَمُ مَا فِيْ نَفْسِيْ وَلَآ اَعْلَمُ مَا فِيْ نَفْسِكَ ۗاِنَّكَ اَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوْبِ ١١٦

وَإِذْ
And when
qāla
قَالَ
said
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
yāʿīsā
يَٰعِيسَى
"O Isa
ib'na
ٱبْنَ
son
maryama
مَرْيَمَ
(of) Maryam!
a-anta
ءَأَنتَ
Did you
qul'ta
قُلْتَ
say
lilnnāsi
لِلنَّاسِ
to the people
ittakhidhūnī
ٱتَّخِذُونِى
"Take me
wa-ummiya
وَأُمِّىَ
and my mother
ilāhayni
إِلَٰهَيْنِ
(as) two gods
min
مِن
from
dūni
دُونِ
besides
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِۖ
Allah?"
qāla
قَالَ
He said
sub'ḥānaka
سُبْحَٰنَكَ
"Glory be to You!
مَا
Not
yakūnu
يَكُونُ
was
لِىٓ
for me
an
أَنْ
that
aqūla
أَقُولَ
I say
مَا
what
laysa
لَيْسَ
not
لِى
I
biḥaqqin
بِحَقٍّۚ
(had) right
in
إِن
If
kuntu
كُنتُ
I had
qul'tuhu
قُلْتُهُۥ
said it
faqad
فَقَدْ
then surely
ʿalim'tahu
عَلِمْتَهُۥۚ
You would have known it
taʿlamu
تَعْلَمُ
You know
مَا
what
فِى
(is) in
nafsī
نَفْسِى
myself
walā
وَلَآ
and not
aʿlamu
أَعْلَمُ
I know
مَا
what
فِى
(is) in
nafsika
نَفْسِكَۚ
Yourself
innaka
إِنَّكَ
Indeed, You
anta
أَنتَ
You
ʿallāmu
عَلَّٰمُ
(are) All-Knower
l-ghuyūbi
ٱلْغُيُوبِ
(of) the unseen
And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen. (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 116)

117

مَا قُلْتُ لَهُمْ اِلَّا مَآ اَمَرْتَنِيْ بِهٖٓ اَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللّٰهَ رَبِّيْ وَرَبَّكُمْ ۚوَكُنْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ شَهِيْدًا مَّا دُمْتُ فِيْهِمْ ۚ فَلَمَّا تَوَفَّيْتَنِيْ كُنْتَ اَنْتَ الرَّقِيْبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۗوَاَنْتَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيْدٌ ١١٧

Not
qul'tu
قُلْتُ
I said
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
illā
إِلَّا
except
مَآ
what
amartanī
أَمَرْتَنِى
You commanded me
bihi
بِهِۦٓ
[with it]
ani
أَنِ
that
uʿ'budū
ٱعْبُدُوا۟
"You worship
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
rabbī
رَبِّى
my Lord
warabbakum
وَرَبَّكُمْۚ
and your Lord"
wakuntu
وَكُنتُ
And I was
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
over them
shahīdan
شَهِيدًا
a witness
مَّا
that
dum'tu
دُمْتُ
as long as I
fīhim
فِيهِمْۖ
(was) among them
falammā
فَلَمَّا
then when
tawaffaytanī
تَوَفَّيْتَنِى
You raised me
kunta
كُنتَ
You were
anta
أَنتَ
[You]
l-raqība
ٱلرَّقِيبَ
the Watcher
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْۚ
over them
wa-anta
وَأَنتَ
and You
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
(are) on
kulli
كُلِّ
every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing
shahīdun
شَهِيدٌ
a Witness
I said not to them except what You commanded me – to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness. (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 117)
Tafsir
118

اِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَاِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ ۚوَاِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَاِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكِيْمُ ١١٨

in
إِن
If
tuʿadhib'hum
تُعَذِّبْهُمْ
You punish them
fa-innahum
فَإِنَّهُمْ
then indeed they
ʿibāduka
عِبَادُكَۖ
(are) Your slaves
wa-in
وَإِن
and if
taghfir
تَغْفِرْ
You forgive
lahum
لَهُمْ
[for] them
fa-innaka
فَإِنَّكَ
then indeed You
anta
أَنتَ
You
l-ʿazīzu
ٱلْعَزِيزُ
(are) the All-Mighty
l-ḥakīmu
ٱلْحَكِيمُ
the All-Wise"
If You should punish them – indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them – indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 118)
Tafsir
119

قَالَ اللّٰهُ هٰذَا يَوْمُ يَنْفَعُ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ صِدْقُهُمْ ۗ لَهُمْ جَنّٰتٌ تَجْرِيْ مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْاَنْهٰرُ خٰلِدِيْنَ فِيْهَآ اَبَدًا ۗرَضِيَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوْا عَنْهُ ۗذٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيْمُ ١١٩

قَالَ
Will say
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
hādhā
هَٰذَا
"This
yawmu
يَوْمُ
Day
yanfaʿu
يَنفَعُ
will profit
l-ṣādiqīna
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
the truthful
ṣid'quhum
صِدْقُهُمْۚ
their truthfulness"
lahum
لَهُمْ
For them
jannātun
جَنَّٰتٌ
(are) Gardens
tajrī
تَجْرِى
flows
min
مِن
from
taḥtihā
تَحْتِهَا
underneath it
l-anhāru
ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ
the rivers
khālidīna
خَٰلِدِينَ
will abide
fīhā
فِيهَآ
in it
abadan
أَبَدًاۚ
forever"
raḍiya
رَّضِىَ
is pleased
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
ʿanhum
عَنْهُمْ
with them
waraḍū
وَرَضُوا۟
and they are pleased
ʿanhu
عَنْهُۚ
with Him
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
l-fawzu
ٱلْفَوْزُ
(is) the success
l-ʿaẓīmu
ٱلْعَظِيمُ
(the) great
Allah will say, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness." For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment. (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 119)
Tafsir
120

لِلّٰهِ مُلْكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا فِيْهِنَّ ۗوَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ ࣖ ١٢٠

lillahi
لِلَّهِ
To Allah (belongs)
mul'ku
مُلْكُ
the dominion
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
(of) the heavens
wal-arḍi
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
and the earth
wamā
وَمَا
and what
fīhinna
فِيهِنَّۚ
(is) in them
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
And He
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
(is) on
kulli
كُلِّ
every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing
qadīrun
قَدِيرٌۢ
All-Powerful
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is within them. And He is over all things competent. (QS. [5] Al-Ma'idah: 120)
